Talking Deflategate to kids

Submitted by WestQuad on
Today my 7 year old son said he hated Tom Brady. When I asked why my 5 year old chirped in “because he’s a cheater.” Evidently some kid named Dylan told them about deflategate. I told my kids:

1. Tom Brady went to Michigan and Michigan players don’ cheat.

2. Brady will have played in 8 Super Bowls and will have won 6, more than any other player.

3. Temperature was the likely cause http://mgoblog.com/mgoboard/ot-deflategate-thought-experiment-could-bal…

4. Their little friend Dylan is a douche bag and should shut the hell up.

What do tell your children about Tom Brady?

My daughters took swimming lessons in 1st grade as does every kid in our school district and it is paid for by a local man. Very thoughtful and generous. Millions of children never learn to swim. Just an example of giving. The opportunities are out there.

It can't end in starvation AND genocide. Much of one will prevent the other. Venezuela is a bad situation. My church sends food there marked with false labeling so it won't be stolen by hungry dock workers. We put money in shampoo bottles to get that past the dock workers. We send otc medicines too. It's really awful.

Wow.  Where did I say anything about socialism (i.e. someone should TAKE away Brady's money and do something good with it)?  I said, at the outset of my post, that Brady EARNED it.  It's his, no question.  I'm all for capitalsim.  My point was about the individual, i.e. what should a person do with their wealth, resources, influence, etc?  This is purely about what Brady's personal ethics are (and other people in similar positions) and nothing to do about socio-economic systems.  That's why charities are so admirable - people are making a consious decision to help others without being compelled to do so by law.

I tell them to make sure to use commas ... “will have won 6, more than any other player”. Then I tell them that Dylan is probably just a Sparty in hiding who will forever have an inferiority complex over the fact U of M has a QB that started 50/50 his senior year and is now the GOAT. You could combine Smoker, Cousins, Cook and never get there. Brady is the greatest story in NFL history - with his late draft pick with terrible combine numbers and transition from Bledsoe to MVPs, all the SBs, and marrying a super model.

The press is the devil in most cases.

Tell the kid jealousy is always around people that are successfull.

Try to be successful in what you do.  Don't be concerned with the people who are jealous.

Finally the appropriate thing to tell your kids. Look up the necklace affair regarding Maria Antoinette. When the masses feel justified, the truth will be discarded for the purposes "good intentions". Anyone who spreads deflategate, like the eighteenth century French courtiers, are wullfIlly embracing a lie to make themselves feel justified in their own dispicable acts. Let them eat cake

Lot of Brady haters out there simply because he's got everything, or at least everything to a lot of people.

People say "well he was the quarterback, he should have known". I'd say the center has his paws on the ball more frequently and for longer than the quarterback. Nobody even thought about suspending let alone "investigating" the center. Essentially Brady ended up placing some phone calls to the equipment manager at two times, but only as a result of his name coming up with respect to deflategate. For all we know Brady was trying to figure out what happened and whether or not there was anything to the witch hunt.

I'm 100% for going after cheaters, but this was a witch hunt that verified nothing.

Tell him that Brady is the best QB ever (and a Wolverine!) and some people are jealous, like this other kid apparently.  Kids don't need super-complicated explanations.

Conspiracy theory believers are idiots.

Roger Goodell is also an idiot.

Dylan is an idiot.

Tom Brady is the GOAT.

Who gives a shit how much air is in the ball, the game ended 45-7

Tell your kids that New England won 45 - 7. NE didn’t need to cheat to win. Indianapolis was making excuses to distract people from the fact NE mopped the floor with them.

On a related topic, how do you justify your rooting interests around the fact that you love Tom Brady but hate the rest of the Patriots organization and the fanbase?

Growing up the Green Bay Packers were what the Patriots are today.  Always good, always well run and the organization everybody was trying to become.  Every era has had a team like the Patriots - growing up in the Detroit area and now following the Browns I've just never had the good fortune of rooting for one

60's - Packers

70's - Steelers

80's - 49ers

90's - Cowboys

2000 and beyond - Patriots

On the Sirius Pat McAfee show they had the guy who caught the interception Jackson I think his name was, anyways he was on the radio calling it a sham, he was the “whistleblower” but said he didn’t notice anything different with the ball and wasn’t even interviewed by the colts or the nfl regarding the issue
