Just to add to this, imagine what a parent who killed Larry Nassar would be doing for the next several years. Instead of helping their daughter, they'd be spending their time, money and energy on fighting legal charges--and that's even if they're found not guilty or pardoned. Legal cases can take a lot of all three of those things, and in turn those would be resources they're unable to spend on their daughter. It'd also take years.

There's also the risk that they are convicted and not pardoned for whatever reason (e.g., if they accidentally hurt or kill someone in addition to Larry Nassar).

Finally, the attention that would inevitably result would make it harder for their daughter to move on with their life. It's going to be bad enough with the inevitable civil lawsuits.

This just doesn't end for these families. How many knew? Dozens? Was it something Simon and her friends just joked about when no one else was around? If she lasts another day in her job, I'd be amazed. This goes so much further than any animosity toward a rival university.

The only way to deal with abuse this pervasive is to fess up, come clean and let the chips fall where they may. You can’t cover it up, it will leach out; and when it does, it will be that much worse. If the lawyers didn’t tell MSU that was the way to go, they failed miserably in counseling their client. If they did and MSU ignored the advice, then the officials are idiots as well as immoral.

Read this: https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/morning-mix/wp/2018/01/17/ive-been-… Family "friend"...kid was 6 when he started.. I saw her testimony, and its heart wrenching to put it mildly. Nassar is a sick motherfucker, and so many failures to figure him out before he damaged so many people and families. From what I've read that this young woman, who was abused by him in her own home over the course of years (6 -12 years old), wasn't one of his patients. Her parents didn't believe her when she told them--and ultimately her dad committed suicide... Beyond tragic--and no less than that of the Sandusky horrors.

If I were still a MI resident or if I were a grad of MSU I'd be writing every single trustee to tell them that none of my money will go to MSU AND I'll be voting them out of office until a full indep. investigation is completed AND the Pres and AD and Deam of Human med (or w/e the fuck they call it in EL) are shit canned

For the longest time it seemed as though the amount of scrutiny this was getting from the media was completely insufficient in relation to the crimes.

That's no longer the case—it's now completely blowing up on twitter, with the Washington Post on it big-time now, and the momentum of social media is going to take over. MSU's days of delay, obfuscation, and passive-aggressive coverup are over. Simon's days are numbered, and once she goes, there will be increasing pressure on other MSU higher-ups to get shit-canned as well.

(Whether it makes sense to look at this case through this lens is perhaps a question of debate, but I bet that the absolute refusal by dozens of adults of both sexes to believe these girls will be looked at as another manifestation of the pervasive sexual mistreatment of girls and women in our culture.)

in that I fear the institution was so invested in not rocking the boat on their prized asset that they overlooked obvious red flags. It's obvious that MSU was proud to have Nassar in house because of his reputation. I suspect they overlooked red flags for a long time because they so valued that relationship

IMHO it was his status as a medical doctor that gave him cover, and allowed his enablers to look the other way.

One nurse has reported that Nassar sent her out of the exam room, but she deferred to him against her better judgement because he outranked her as a full medical doctor. It's horrible she did so, but I imagine she'll be having nightmares about her decision for the rest of her life.

Actually, MSU's denial is going to make things much, much worse for them. At this point, as Don mentioned, the media has their jaws into a "hot story."

  • With Olympian's Simone Biles, Aly Raisman and McKayla Maroney weighing in, it increases readership interest (and horror) greatly, both nationally and internationally.
  • With the non-disclosure agreements of some (Maroney, perhaps others?) the US Gymnastics Assoc. is also under a spotlight, and would love to scapegoat Nassar.
  • With sexual abuse and assault much more in the spotlight in the last year, this definitely reinforces that narrative. (Harvey Weinstein and many others.)
  • The MeToo move is rightly outraged at so many turning a blind eye.
  • With the Olympics coming up, albeit Winter Olympics, there is a tie in. IIRC, Nassar also "treated" several figure skaters.
  • With the suicides coming to light, it only makes things worse.

Three observations

  1. Patrick Fitzgerald was the former United States Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois. Under his watch, Governors George Ryan (Republican) and Rod Blagojevich (Democrat) were convicted and sent to prison. He also successfully prosecuted Scooter Libby, Dick Cheney's chief of staff, for perjury. Firtzgerald is absolutely methodical and incorruptible. He cannot be bought. The fact that he has been involved in the investigation means that no stone will be left unturned. MSU will be held accountable to the degree they are accountable, but he also will not allow them to be lynched by a mob mentality.
  2. Many of you have an undying hatred of MSU. From your perspective, you are a fan of UofM, and your second favorite team is whoever is playing MSU. You would like to see MSU destroyed. Step back and take a breath. Is that really what you want? We love our team and our school, but we are sports fans. This is much bigger. We want those culpable to be punished, but don't use this as a way to jab at MSU. Actually, in this case with Nassar, it is best for Michigan fans to do nothing out of spite and hatred . . . otherwise, it merely looks like piling on.
  3. It is a horrific story, and one that will be used (rightly) as a cautionary tale. From my perspective, it reminds me that we too often give a pass or don't investigate deeply when we in some way have a vested interest in the outcome. It is better to seek justice in as unbiased a manner as possible.

and keeping this in the light where it should be. Simon: "Play it straight up..." nice of you to play it straight up...as opposed to the other ways to handle sexual assault...

MSU really is handling this about as badly as PSU did with Sandusky, a level of incompetence I never thought we'd see again. Simon, Hollis, etc. need to be gone. People ignored warning signs for 20 fucking years.

Accountability is a function so lost in our society.  I watched video of a few of these victimized women addressing this scumbag and found myself wishing they were allowed to truly punish him.  I hope there are some guards in the other Big House that turn their backs.

As for the line of individuals who were in positions of authority that could have taken action, shame, shame, shame on them all.  They too are criminals for robbing these women of so much, none of which can be replaced.  If the penal system can't address MSU's staff for their complete lack of respect for another human, I hope these women take civil action against Michigan State and each person individually.  Protecting a serial rapist is beyond comprehension. Those who participated in the cover-up must be held accountable for not protecting those they were responsible for. Prayers to each of these victims and their families.

I am sickened about Simon but also this:

"an official who is now MSU’s assistant general counsel"

WTF?  MSU's general counsel received a report and didn't follow proper protocol?

Seems to frequently lead to a coverup.

But there is always someone in the link that spills the beans whether deliberately or by a slip of the tongue.

Nothing good can come from this for MSU and deservedly so.

The fact that allegations of knowledge, occurred after Penn State and the public statements by Simon in 2012 highlighting supposed training n protocols, spanned at least three different sports: gymnastics track softball, make me surprised AD Hollis survives.
