Even the Bob Quinn connection can't stop people from seeing the team is cursed.

So... Bye, Felicia Patricia?
January 10th, 2018 at 4:33 PM ^
blame him. I thinkPatricia would be a lousy hire anyway.

Swap out Economics for Aeronautical Engineering and Georgetwon for RPI, and this is a post about Jim Schwartz. I don't disagree that what Patrica brings to the table is appealing, but its been done before and didn't work. Unfortunately going the "experienced" route and hiring Caldwell didn't work out either.
January 10th, 2018 at 4:36 PM ^
There is ZERO information in the article.
The "hot news" is that Patricia and the GM might get along. No one has a clue. The fact that it's making the rounds as an actual story is scary.
January 10th, 2018 at 4:44 PM ^
the fact that a national outlet in ProFootballTalk reported that the Patriots expected Patricia was likely to end up with the Lions carries a bit more weight for me than a NYDN reporter that says Patricia will end up with the Giants. I'm also a massive homer that has a rocket for the rocket scientist so I'm biased.

Grow up in Michigan and not give a shit about the Lions because you realize the Lions organization has no real interest in winning as long as the franchise is profitable.
Become a Michigan fan instead.
Profit.

Maybe Quinn forced Jim Bob on him and Matty P wants to clear the deck.
January 10th, 2018 at 4:43 PM ^
Cooter is a useless OC. How can Stafford want to keep him around when his life would be much easier with an OC that can coordinate a run game?

...I'll be their HC for half of Caldwell's contract amount. I can coach them to mediocrity year in and year out, too.

Jim Bob should be coaching in the South somewhere. Kentucky, Florida, Tennessee.

McDaniel to Indy
Shurmur to Arizona bringing Keenum with him
Wilks to New York
Patricia to Detroit
If, by some strange confluence of events, I am correct remember where you heard it.

but other than that I don't see what would make the Giants a more attractive job offer. The Lions have a better quarterback, a more stable front office, more cap space and flexibility to play around with the roster, less media pressure, and a better all around receiving corps, even though Odell is still one of the great playmakers in the NFL. The Giants gave a ton of guaranteed money to veterans like Olivier Vernon, Jason Pierre Paul, Janoris Jenkins, and Damon Harrison, and while they all performed well, it kind of locks them into paying those guys for a few years, while also having to pay Odell Beckham and Landon Collins longterm contracts next year. But I trust Bob Quinn to make the right hire, I just hope it's not another retread.

This organization is sooooo cursed. They may never get it right. This is how they ended up with Caldwell. They tried for Wisenhunt last time and settled for Caldwell. They may never get a win
January 10th, 2018 at 4:46 PM ^
Ken Whisenhunt went 3-20 with the Titans, and went 45-51 with the Cardinals. He sucks way worse than Caldwell, at least Jim Caldwell brought stability for four years until a better front office could take over.
January 10th, 2018 at 5:30 PM ^
to be fair, he had no QB when at Tennessee. I can't speak to his time in Arizona. When he went to Tennessee he was the hot pick for the next great head coach.
January 10th, 2018 at 6:05 PM ^
and then went 2-14 with a good defense, and went 1-6 after taking a QB #2 in Marcus Mariota. Johnny Manziel had two wins as a starting QB in his entire career, one of them was over Whisenhunt and the Titans. It doesn't really matter that he was the next hot pick, he was rank ass trash.

No coach or general manager goes into a job thinking anything but that they will kick ass. In Detroit whoever takes the job inherits a 9-7 team that has an established good to very good quarterback signed for 5 years and significant cap room. Jobs like that rarely become available. Whoever the next coach is will be thinking things are lined up to become a hero. Not that he will get herpes from ownership (now there is an awful visual...)
Whatever happened in the past is of no consequence. Only fans and talk show hosts get hung up on curses. The Red Sox and the Cubs won the World Series. Jacksonville won a playoff game. Arizona made a Super Bowl.

That the story has no merit because it talks about WHY they would be a good fit and there's no sourcing that he actually has any interest in the Giants job, why would people freak out if they didn't get Patricia? How do you know which coach will work out well? There's ZERO way to determine the synergy between coach and organization. He could come here and be horrible. They could get lucky that they missed on him and someone like Shurmur is better.
I don't get why some people get hung up on names. Unless it's someone like BB or whatever HoF coaches are still active, there's just no way to determine who's going to be good.
January 10th, 2018 at 4:45 PM ^
other than the browns or bills, its hard to find a HC job that isn't more favorable

They have, once in the last 18 years.
The lions have been to the playoff in '11, '14 and '16.
And now you know.
