Even the Bob Quinn connection can't stop people from seeing the team is cursed.
January 10th, 2018 at 8:13 PM ^
So... Bye, Felicia Patricia?
January 10th, 2018 at 4:33 PM ^
blame him. I thinkPatricia would be a lousy hire anyway.
January 10th, 2018 at 7:58 PM ^
I don't. Mainly because he is an intelligent guy, and I don't think there are many of those coaching in the NFL. He has a Bachelor's in Aeronautical Engineering from RPI(where he played football). He is also the one who introduced Belichek to advanced metrics a decade ago. It would be the first time in my lifetime the Lions hired a coach that other teams also covet. I would be ecstatic to get him.
January 11th, 2018 at 11:43 AM ^
Swap out Economics for Aeronautical Engineering and Georgetwon for RPI, and this is a post about Jim Schwartz. I don't disagree that what Patrica brings to the table is appealing, but its been done before and didn't work. Unfortunately going the "experienced" route and hiring Caldwell didn't work out either.
January 10th, 2018 at 4:36 PM ^
There is ZERO information in the article.
The "hot news" is that Patricia and the GM might get along. No one has a clue. The fact that it's making the rounds as an actual story is scary.
January 10th, 2018 at 4:44 PM ^
the fact that a national outlet in ProFootballTalk reported that the Patriots expected Patricia was likely to end up with the Lions carries a bit more weight for me than a NYDN reporter that says Patricia will end up with the Giants. I'm also a massive homer that has a rocket for the rocket scientist so I'm biased.
January 10th, 2018 at 5:40 PM ^
That has an eerily similar ring to it as "Mrs Harbaugh doesn't want to leave the Bay Area."
January 10th, 2018 at 10:17 PM ^
Didn’t read the article but love in NE. Sports radio here was talking like it was a done deal.
January 10th, 2018 at 4:36 PM ^
How did you guy's become legit Lions fans?
Also, condolences.
January 10th, 2018 at 5:41 PM ^
Recipe: grow up in Michigan and then move away, but instead of grabbing onto the local team, buy into the Detroit v. Everybody mentality and become a lifer.
January 10th, 2018 at 6:08 PM ^
Buy into the "real fans don't stop rooting for their hometown team just because they move (see Sports Guy, Boston - pre ESPN)" and continue to root for the Lions. Then discover rooting for a team that no one else in your area does is oddly enjoyable, and add in that rooting for a team that no one else does while they go winless is even more oddly enjoyable, and you are stuck.
Ironic Twist: move back to Michigan and discover that now you are just like everybody else rooting for said awful team and experience true emptiness.
January 10th, 2018 at 7:07 PM ^
adopt the local team and still remain a Lions fan. I jumped on the Jaguars bandwagon (aka the Jaggin Wagon) when we moved to Jax a few years back and it's paying off this year. Still primarily a Lions fan though. I guess what im saying is, I'll be rooting for the Lions in that Jags-Lions super bowl next year.
January 10th, 2018 at 7:36 PM ^
But it didn't feel right anymore with them in LA this year. But I would never dream of rooting for the Vikings now that I live in MN. In fact, I'm irrationally excited about how depressed the locals will be when they choke again, whether it be this weekend or next, or God willing, when hosting the big one!

futuristic way for you to get the Blair Walsh kick tattooed on your skin
January 10th, 2018 at 7:52 PM ^
Damn that's pretty much my Michigan football fandom in the nutshell. I'm actually an Iowa grad and live within the state. I'm from Michigan however and can't let go of the Wolverines
January 11th, 2018 at 7:49 AM ^
Grow up in Michigan and not give a shit about the Lions because you realize the Lions organization has no real interest in winning as long as the franchise is profitable.
Become a Michigan fan instead.
Profit.
January 10th, 2018 at 4:38 PM ^
Maybe Quinn forced Jim Bob on him and Matty P wants to clear the deck.
January 10th, 2018 at 4:43 PM ^
Cooter is a useless OC. How can Stafford want to keep him around when his life would be much easier with an OC that can coordinate a run game?
January 10th, 2018 at 5:15 PM ^
Problem is on that terrible defense
January 10th, 2018 at 5:44 PM ^
...I'll be their HC for half of Caldwell's contract amount. I can coach them to mediocrity year in and year out, too.
January 10th, 2018 at 5:54 PM ^
washes Stafford's F150 every Tuesday.
January 10th, 2018 at 6:58 PM ^
but F150?
January 10th, 2018 at 6:57 PM ^
Jim Bob should be coaching in the South somewhere. Kentucky, Florida, Tennessee.
January 10th, 2018 at 4:40 PM ^
Between Colts, Lions, Cards, and Giants no team really doing much. Of the teams left in the playoffs, the only big names coming up for multiple spots are Patricia, McDaniels, and Shurmur. Missing anyone? Surprised with Carolina out, Wilkes hasn't been offered. He was high on several list. He turning into a backup option? McDaniel rumors have been really quiet. Can't imagine all are waiting on the dominos to fall with Patricia, are they? Curious what Colts and Cards do. Waiting can hurt your options for position & coordinator spots. If Lions lose Patricia and settle on Vrabel this late in the game, they are in big trouble.
January 10th, 2018 at 5:27 PM ^
McDaniel to Indy
Shurmur to Arizona bringing Keenum with him
Wilks to New York
Patricia to Detroit
If, by some strange confluence of events, I am correct remember where you heard it.
January 10th, 2018 at 5:56 PM ^
but that's the kiss of death.
January 10th, 2018 at 4:42 PM ^
but other than that I don't see what would make the Giants a more attractive job offer. The Lions have a better quarterback, a more stable front office, more cap space and flexibility to play around with the roster, less media pressure, and a better all around receiving corps, even though Odell is still one of the great playmakers in the NFL. The Giants gave a ton of guaranteed money to veterans like Olivier Vernon, Jason Pierre Paul, Janoris Jenkins, and Damon Harrison, and while they all performed well, it kind of locks them into paying those guys for a few years, while also having to pay Odell Beckham and Landon Collins longterm contracts next year. But I trust Bob Quinn to make the right hire, I just hope it's not another retread.
January 10th, 2018 at 5:06 PM ^
Ownership. Which happens to be much more important than any of that shit.
January 10th, 2018 at 4:42 PM ^
This organization is sooooo cursed. They may never get it right. This is how they ended up with Caldwell. They tried for Wisenhunt last time and settled for Caldwell. They may never get a win
January 10th, 2018 at 4:46 PM ^
Ken Whisenhunt went 3-20 with the Titans, and went 45-51 with the Cardinals. He sucks way worse than Caldwell, at least Jim Caldwell brought stability for four years until a better front office could take over.
January 10th, 2018 at 5:30 PM ^
to be fair, he had no QB when at Tennessee. I can't speak to his time in Arizona. When he went to Tennessee he was the hot pick for the next great head coach.
January 10th, 2018 at 6:05 PM ^
and then went 2-14 with a good defense, and went 1-6 after taking a QB #2 in Marcus Mariota. Johnny Manziel had two wins as a starting QB in his entire career, one of them was over Whisenhunt and the Titans. It doesn't really matter that he was the next hot pick, he was rank ass trash.
January 10th, 2018 at 9:43 PM ^
I have nothing but respect for Caldwell. For the first time in ages they were an actual legit disciplined football team. They stopped taking all the stupid ass penalties and kinda stopped constantly finding ways to screw up. Hopefully the next coach can take them to the next level because I feel like Caldwell had them on the right track and I really don’t want them to go back to what they were.
January 10th, 2018 at 5:08 PM ^
Not true. At all. Not cursed. Have some fucking perspective. Owned by the Fords in a time when we went off the gold standard, slowly kicking everything overseas. Hard to keep mind on the team when the family business is slowly slipping away. And Caldwell was a good coach. Be careful what you wish for.

It was one of rhe steps FDR took to get the country out of the Great Depression.

The gold standard??
January 10th, 2018 at 4:44 PM ^
Does anyone really blame him? Nobody in their right mind would want to come to Detroit and catch career herpes
January 10th, 2018 at 5:05 PM ^
No former Lions head coach has taken another NFL head coaching position. Ever.
January 10th, 2018 at 5:07 PM ^
Sad but very true
January 10th, 2018 at 5:13 PM ^
Buddy Wilson coached the Steelers from 1957-1964 and George Wilson coached the Dolphins from 1966-1969.
January 10th, 2018 at 9:52 PM ^
I think it only dates back to then though, so for the last 40 years it’s a fact
January 10th, 2018 at 9:46 PM ^
Sounds like gym shorts may end that run sometime soon
January 10th, 2018 at 5:44 PM ^
No coach or general manager goes into a job thinking anything but that they will kick ass. In Detroit whoever takes the job inherits a 9-7 team that has an established good to very good quarterback signed for 5 years and significant cap room. Jobs like that rarely become available. Whoever the next coach is will be thinking things are lined up to become a hero. Not that he will get herpes from ownership (now there is an awful visual...)
Whatever happened in the past is of no consequence. Only fans and talk show hosts get hung up on curses. The Red Sox and the Cubs won the World Series. Jacksonville won a playoff game. Arizona made a Super Bowl.
January 10th, 2018 at 8:33 PM ^
Rudock is pretty good.
January 10th, 2018 at 4:45 PM ^
That the story has no merit because it talks about WHY they would be a good fit and there's no sourcing that he actually has any interest in the Giants job, why would people freak out if they didn't get Patricia? How do you know which coach will work out well? There's ZERO way to determine the synergy between coach and organization. He could come here and be horrible. They could get lucky that they missed on him and someone like Shurmur is better.
I don't get why some people get hung up on names. Unless it's someone like BB or whatever HoF coaches are still active, there's just no way to determine who's going to be good.
January 10th, 2018 at 4:45 PM ^
other than the browns or bills, its hard to find a HC job that isn't more favorable
January 10th, 2018 at 8:32 PM ^
Bills made the playoffs...
January 11th, 2018 at 9:22 AM ^
They have, once in the last 18 years.
The lions have been to the playoff in '11, '14 and '16.
And now you know.
