Pretty sure he meant "win" another World Series rather than "when". Wasn't that hard bux.
December 10th, 2017 at 7:29 PM ^
against John Smoltz was the best pitched game I ever saw.

No, you're not in the minority. If you had a must-win game, you gave the ball to Jack Motherfucking Morris. And he'd win it.

The rules for enshrinement changed after Wade Boggs chose to go in as a Devil Ray. I believe the HOF decides now.

Now, this was never verified by either Boggs or the Rays owner. But a lot of folks believed to be true given the nature of both folk. Anyway, the rumor was: when Boggs signed with Tampa Bay in 1998, there was a "quid pro quo": Boggs would get a little extra $ and Boggs agreed to go into the HoF wearing a Devil Rays hat.
That rumor was out there for years. When it came time for Boggs' induction, he DID want to go in wearing a Devil Rays hat. Cooperstown stepped in and said THEY would make the decision.
He's wearing a Red Sox hat on his plaque.

i remember him wearing a hat that was half indians, half giants. and a shirt that was half padres and half mariners...or something like that. not necessarily at the HOF enshrinement though.

It was that or the old-times game

Played 14 seasons with Tigers, one with Minnesota and two with the Twins (plus one in Cleveland). I say he goes in as a Tiger as he should.

the tigers weren't close to contending after morris left. there were no wild card teams back then.
December 10th, 2017 at 8:31 PM ^
They led the league in runs. It's likely that having Morris on the staff would've resulted in at least 3-4 more wins for the team.
December 10th, 2017 at 9:03 PM ^
that still leaves them out of the post season by 3-4 games
December 11th, 2017 at 10:26 AM ^
and that may have taken them over the hump.
It's highly unlikely based on the Tigers front office post-1987. I still think they would've made the playoffs in 1988 if they would've paid Kirk Gibson what he was worth. Instead of finishing one game out, they likely win the division.
December 11th, 2017 at 12:37 PM ^
i can agree with you on that one. unfortunately the tigers needed more than one pitcher during the big boy years of fielder, tettleton, deer, etc.

Induction will be in July, so you'll miss those plaques by a month.

Absolutely. Any serious list of the best SS-2B double-play combos of all time will have Trammell and Whitaker close to the top of the list.
If they'd played in a major media market like NY, Boston, Chicago, or LA, both of them would have been voted into the Hall years ago.
December 10th, 2017 at 8:15 PM ^
the subsequent steroid era cheapened their stats to the general public.
December 10th, 2017 at 8:38 PM ^
Buster Olney made a good point, that Tram and Morris were also hurt by the steroid era causing a logjam of those players on the ballot while the writers spent years debating whether or not they should be in, while ignoring everyone from the '80s except a tiny handful of big names.
December 11th, 2017 at 7:29 AM ^
Exactly. It's always grated on me that Ozzie Smith was a first ballot HOF inductee while Trammell sneaks in by the skin of his teeth even though he exceeded Ozzie in pretty much every offensive statistical category.
Jack Morris was the winningest pitcher of the 80's, but he's in as an afterthought?
