Sam Webb Says Michigan now interested in Shea Patterson

Michigan now interested, along with the schools out west. All compliance offices of interested suitors are trying to see if he can become immediately eligible. Webb also says some Ole Miss players have retained legal counsel in an effort for immediate eligibility, though he says he’s not sure if Patterson is among them. Why the change? IMO likely tied to Speights decision. *Title edit for clarity

You don't have any evidence that he is not clean. And don't bring the brother getting hired thing. We aren't clean if that is your standard.

I don't think any of this ever hits a courtroom for it to be settled legally. That is where we differ on how this plays out.

You assume he will need a waiver. I do not. You assume he will get denied if he applies for one. I do not.

I said I think he gets one if he applies for one. His reason for leaving doesn't have to be "wanting to." There is also the fact that he can claim any further association with a program that is corrupt harms his reputation and career prospects going forward. There doesn't need to be a lawsuit. There only needs to be a threat of one.

That being said, he expects to sit out a year anyway so it's moot.

But as i have said already, I am pretty sure Harbaugh likes him and wants him if he wants to be at Michigan.

I don't have evidence that he's not clean, but you also don't have evidence that he is clean. I'm not indicting the guy, but he's a mega recruit from a program that just got hammered for paying and providing illicit benefits to mega recruits. From the perspective of a staff thinking of taking him on, it should not be assumed that Patterson is clean until it can be verified. He's the type of player Ole Miss didn't get until they started playing dirty. Innocent until proven guilty doesn't preclude having a healthy suspicion, as our staff should until they can prove it away (with any kid from Ole Miss, not just Patterson).

 

I don't think anything gets to a courtroom either, almost nothing gets to court. However, I also don't think that anyone representing a client that knowingly participated in the violations that Ole Miss was just sanctioned for will threaten the NCAA with a lawsuit. I assume that's how we find out some players that were participated. I know that Patterson will need a waiver unless NCAA makes an addendum to their sanctions allowing him to transfer freely of their own volition. I realize that my first paragraph supports the notion that further association with Ole Miss hurts his reputation, but if he makes that contention and the NCAA doesn't immediately cave to his transfer request, he has to be able to demonstrate that he actually is clean.

 

I agree that he's going to have to sit out. Seems like we are getting there in different ways, but I would put the chances of him playing next year at under 10%.

Please come on down. I like Peters and really don’t know what he can do yet but so far to me he looks like an awesome game manger but lacks that big play/my number 1 guy thing. I don’t know it’s just what I see in the small sample size I really wanted speight to stay and win the job next year

I liked speight. Got a raw deal. Did he make some poor decisions yes, but he seemed very in control of the offense. Would you rather have speight their or basically two deep with McCaffery as your back up with no experience. We all saw what happened with the qb going down this year well two qbs going down. I hope Peters is great, and wanting a 5 star recruit to come is wanting the exact opposite of mediocrity. We lost the game this year because of a dropped pic and mainly qb play so I don’t want that to happen anymore.

Yes breaking 3 vertebrae losing your only good receiver after 3 games and no time to throw the ball in the first three games. I believe if he were to stay healthy Michigan only loses to penn state and he is the qb next year

In all fairness I’m an over the top speight backer. I just thought he had it. I thought he was going to be the guy that led them to the playoff next year, and everyone loves Peters so much and we really have not seen enough of him to prove that yet. Especially since things were kept simple for him. He was obviously a better option than okorn but that is not saying much

Pretty obvious you don't like Shea Patterson. All I know is if Michigan has an elite Qb you can start filling up the trophy case. Good Qb play also helps out the defense. They can take the fight right out of another team and with the defense Michigan will be fielding,there will be many three and outs and Michigan points scored.

Bottom line is if Patterson wants to be here, it will be up to what Harbaugh wants and nobody else.

1. Jumping through hoops to get him here and hoping that he's clean from his Ole Miss days, a decent person, and good attitude in the locker room. These are all things you can vet in a year or two of recruiting a kid - not so much in a month. I know this is conjecture - but I would be surprised if he was totally clean at Ole Miss. They obviously gave his brother a job, and I know that we've hired family, but he went to Ole Miss in the middle of all their crap and was one of the biggest recruits they signed - he's suspect.

2. You risk pissing guys off. Not just Peters and McCaffrey, but also Milton and Doyle, also the guys who are close with Peters and McCaffrey, like McKeon. The guys on the team like Peters a lot. I worry that bringing in Patterson, and constantly bringing in stop-gap transfers, sends a message to the kids that the coaches aren't as "for them" as they believed during the recruiting process. I don't want to foster a rotten attitude on a team that is otherwise talented enough to win titles. Then that rot exists through the spring and into fall camp. Then, let's say, you piss off Peters or DMac enought to cause them to transfer - then you're right back at your situation with only 4 scholarship QBs that you say you worry about now! If a transfer in causes a transfer out, you haven't helped depth at all.

3. Finally, there's practice reps. If you have a 3 QB competition, each has less snaps to work on the offense than in a 2 QB competition, and if Patterson wins that competition, you're back at a QB who knows less of the offense and has less experience in it. At some point I'd like some GD continuity at the position so that we can call a wider array of plays and throw the book at opposing defenses. 

 

Call me a worry-wart, but those are my concerns.

lol that's what you took from that comment? He's not eligible to play right away by NCAA bylaws, so he has to apply for a waiver. His transfer will need to be approved by 1. Ole Miss 2. Michigan and 3. the NCAA. You have to deal with three different institutions that have different interests. There's a lot of time there, a lot of red tape. Ole Miss might not want him at Michigan. Michigan has to make sure his credits transfer and he's eligible. The NCAA has to decide whether allowing him to transfer freely with no better justification than Patterson wanting to play at a better program sets a precedent for a type of "free agency" that the NCAA has tried to prevent for so long. I doubt he clears all three of these hurdles, the NCAA being the most likely to trip him up.

lol. It's not that difficult. Those things would happen easily just like any other transfer. You're trying too hard but then again, aren't you the guy who was talking shit about Eason and making accusations you didn't have evidence for or am I thinking of someone else?

It's obvious you have an agenda on this one but Harbaugh I believe likes Patterson and wouildn't mind those "hoops" you're talking about.

Replying to people in an internet discussion doesn't create an agenda. I've stated my opinion, I'm replying to comments about my statements. My opinion is consistent, does that create an agenda?

 

Those things do not happen easily. Michigan's end would go quickly, but Ole Miss' would a little slower, and the NCAA's would be very slow.

 

I did post what multiple individuals told me about Eason, by people who know Eason, have been out with Eason, and write large checks to the University of Georgia. First hand accounts only. The things I posted were corroborated by other GA residents on the board, as well as recruiting folk like Magnus. They were only things that everyone around Eason has known and said for years. I haven't said anything of the sorts with regards to Patterson, as I don't know him or anyone who does, so I'm not sure why that's relevant.

I'm not going to dismiss any of these concerns, but I think it's fair to say that the coaches are aware of all these factors and are in a much better position to gauge the level of risk each one brings. If they think Patterson would make the team better, even with the obvious issues it presents, then I'm in.

QB is the single most important position, period.  We won't have any chance at a BigTen title the next couple of years if our QB play is anything like it was this year.  I am all for getting him if possible and letting the competition rise the cream to the top.

Agreed. I don't think you can ever have too many talented players and we have NC aspirations next year with a qb who primarily played during the soft spot of the conference schedule. I don't see any negatives and the positives could be huge but only if he is eligible next year. If he has to sit out a year, I expect Peters or McCaffrey to establish themselves by then.

I don't understand people who don't want Patterson to come. I have confidence that one of Peters/McCafferey will be good, but we already know Patterson is. Over 320 yard per game, 17 TDs and 9 picks, 8.7 Y/A and a 64% completion rate as a true sophomore in the SEC. Give him an offseason with Harbaugh and he gets even better. He's shown more than Peters to this point, I don't know why we would pass that if he has interest.
