Sam Webb's Gut Says Shea Patterson Not Going to Transfer to Michigan

Submitted by Tedbossman on

His gut tells him Michigan is extremely happy with Brandon Peters and Dylan McCaffrey. He was told that if Patterson transfers it would be out west, where there are more desirable QB scenarios. He also says Patterson would have to sit out a year.

Harbaugh is a smart dude. I know he will address the offensive line issues one way or another. I would love to have Shea Patterson, but I do not think we’ll need him. Peters and DCaff will suffice, and if somehow Angry Michigan Quarterback Hating God strikes again next year, we will have Doyle. For the first time the quarterback room will be filled with only guys that Harbaugh recruited. The future of the QB position looks good.

I think this makes sense given that Wilton will seek another University for a grad transfer. If a  guy with his experience and (admittedly modest) success is seeking out another destination, I'm not sure why Patterson would be attracted.

Speight leaving has to come as a surprise to Michigan and cannot be good. If he left after Spring practice, then we could have at least taken comfort that Peters and/or McCaffrey beat him out. Leaving now is not good, unless Harbaugh has another Rudock ready to go after the season ends (who knows).w

Peters has been pretty average this season and Michigan has had 2 QBs injured, and rolling with 2 QBs on the roster seems like disaster next year (given the O-Line issues and apparent "complexity" of the playbook).

Patterson made sense, given the assumption that the NCAA Sanctions would allow him to transfer & play immediately (like what happened at PSU a few seasons ago). Unless McCaffrey is amazing (I really hope he is), we are in trouble next year.

I am not sure I understand your view.

Brandon’s clearly lead this team very well. He is the future, he is our starter. No reason for Wilton to stay when Peters did a good job and is our future.

Granted Peters didn’t have the stats but he made smart decisions and lead this team...

We are good to go! The future is upon us and you should be excited.

Just my opinion.

My logic is:

1) Speight announced his transfer before the Bowl Game and Spring Practice. He wasn't beaten out by Peters or McCaffrey yet. We also have no reason to believe that if all QBs were healthy that Peters would start in the Bowl Game > Speight.

2) Peters was 3rd string this year behind JOK and we all know how that turned out. In other words, 4 months ago, he douldn't outperform JOK in practice (since Harbaugh runs a merritocracy). Peters' stats were also very underwhelming against awful competition (Rutgers, Maryland, Minnesota).

3) We have seen firsthand the need to have multiple experienced QBs on a roster, so even if Speight was 2nd string behind Peters, he would have to know that he would get a chance to play.

The only explanations as to why Speight is leaving are:

A) He's pissed at Harbaugh for some reason (not known to us)

B) McCaffrey is amazing and Speight didn't even want to compete against him in the Spring

C) Michigan is bringing in an unknown 5th year or JUCO or FCS QB and Speight read the writing on the wall.

Either way, not having a guy like Patterson transfer and play next year at Michigan is bad news for us.

Those are not the only possible explanations.  Here are a few more:

D) Speight wants to be the for-sure starter somewhere as a 5th year senior, not a guy in a tight competition with frankly more talented players;

E) Harbaugh is unwilling or even unsure about playing Speight with his neck injury;

F) Speight didn't mesh as well with Hamilton as with Fisch;

G) Speight isn't convinced M's pass protection will be improved next season and doesn't want to get hurt again...

I personally tend to think D is the most likely reason, since that's the typical reason that QBs do graduate transfers and until there is no evidence to the contrary.

Another possibility is he wants to go to grad school somewhere because he may not be in the NFL. Maybe Michigan isn't the grad school he is going to. It happens. There are many, many possible reasons and we just don't know what it is yet.

I don't get that impression at all. Its not like he was buried in the depth chart, he won the job twice. I feel he's leaving because either:
1. Harbaugh already told him its going to be someone else
2. He thinks he's going to have a very difficult time winning the job next season
3. He's ready to move on.

I still think harbaugh will take a transfer QB for more depth now that speight is leaving. We'd have no experience outside of peters on roster. I like mccafrey but I think harbaugh would like someone just in case 2 go down again

No real loss to me.  Patterson's good, but I would rather stick with the guys who Harbaugh's been developing and know the system.  Papering over Hoke's awful QB recruiting strategy (you know, not doing it) with transfers made sense, but now that Harbaugh has his own guys in there, doesn't seem like the right choice.
