OT: What do I Tell My Kids???

Submitted by FauxMo on

Dear Fellow Michigan Fans,

After a slew of pretty depressing posts on here yesterday, I started to get a bit introspective and sad, and have now gone to a very dark place. Normally, I am pretty optimistic about life in general, or at least realistic-trending-towards-positive. Yet I cannot seem to shake the blues since yesterday.

You see, my kids are 11 and 14, born in 2006 and 2003, respectively. Neither has seen Michigan football win a national title, of course, and only the oldest was even alive when Michigan won its last Big Ten title. She was 1 year old. What with our below-average results this year and our extremely disappointing 2018 recruiting class, I am no longer sure I will be alive for another Michigan Big Ten title in football, let alone a playoff appearance or national title.

Now, in this dark place in which I have come to reside, I am starting to wonder if my kids will even be alive for it. Even assuming my kids can each live well into their 100s - what with our high level of income and advances in modern medicine (can anyone say Lasik???) - I cannot tell them with a straight face that between now and 2110 or so, Michigan will win anything of note in football. I just can't lie to them and promise them that.

So here is my question: Should I encourage them to stop following Michigan football, or Michigan sports in general? We live in Ann Arbor, so it will be hard. But I could, for instance, really start focusing on the Lions, Tigers and Pistons; they're all perennial winners who never let the fans down. Or soccer seems pretty fun to watch. Maybe we can get really into MLS and start driving from city to city to watch mediocre professionals in empty stadiums? Or maybe - and I am sorry to say this, I really am - we can start following another college with high educational and moral standards. I'm hearing good things about Baylor and Louisville lately, for instance.

Any advice here would be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely, your friend,

Fauxmo

How do fans of other schools who never ever ever get championships remain fans?

I dunno man, I think you're being whiny and overly negative (insert joke about Maizen here). We root for Michigan because we went to school there. It's more than just a football team. That should be reason enough.

Michigan football is the best damn football in the state of Michigan. Now that the Wings and Tigers are cellar dwellers and the Pistons have been cellar dwellers, I would say Michigan football is the best sport in the state!

Mgoblog turns closer and closer to shit by the day. The whole point of this thread is to "troll" another user who is annoying. So you are going to show him by being just as annoying.

Keep the blog for Michigan sports, not childish harassment.

What do you tell your kids? What kind of fan are you? Sheesh.

  1. Never upvote your own posts. Even though those points are truly meaningless, it is bad form. Tsk, tsk.
  2. Your kids can do what they want, but if you are a true fan, you root for Michigan. I live in Chicago. I have been a Sox fan my whole life. Never a Cubbie. But those long suffering Cubs fans were finally rewarded.
  3. What kind of faith do you have in Harbaugh anyway? Michigan should be solidly competing for Big 10 Championships and more year in and year out, starting in 2019.

You must be kdding, but I fail to see the humor.

Take this to the extreme and your kids should never follow any college football team other than Alabama, OSU or Clemson.

The OP is stunning, certainly not in a positive manner.

I'm assuming that this was all sarcasm.

That or you're being an asshat.  I really do assume the former though, that or I need to stay off the internet or see if Amazon has a cheap sarcasm detector browser plug-in that I can get delivered within 2 days for free.

never give in, never give in, never, never, never, never-in nothing, great or small, large or petty—never give in except to convictions of honour and good sense.

on the brink of world war, country surrounded by enemies, hitler advancing, france capitulating.  what heart and courage.

The responses to this post prove that most people don't read past the first paragraph or two.

Bravo, FauxMo, this was pretty brilliant. My only criticism would be that the build up was too slow for the people to get to the punchline. Too bad, because what you say puts everything in perspective and is really a message everyone should get.
