Emil Ekiyor on the verge of decommitting

Submitted by Maizen on

Per the recruiting roundup from Sam this morning as well as an update on his board. Essentially confirms what guys like Wiltfong and Lorenz have been saying for weeks. He'll be at Bama next fall. Another big loss for OL recruiting.

But with Bama I often wonder why 5* recruits are content to be Just Another Guy on THE team instead of a star on merely an elite one.  I've heard it's a sign of the times; back in my day kids wanted to play each other and now they want to play for each other.  Saban hit his stride at just the right time.

They want to play with each other. I would say we have to get back to "merely elite" first though. We haven't had back to back seasons with less than 3 losses since 1988 and 1989. That was almost 30 years ago. Even writing that was shitty.

What the hell. We need lineman and don't do shit, and don't keep them when they do come. There is a pattern here, and it is a bad one. Can anyone tell me why we are NOT going after the Big Guys with success?  Something is very amisss here.  Who or what is the reason???

Hopefully Mel gets hockey back to where it belongs. Maybe Hutch can get that elusive second national title.

This is why O'Korn should start. Fans may feel like "the season is lost", but to recruits there's a difference between 10-3 and 8-5. Starting someone other than the best player is a risk.

Oh, look!  Another sky is falling post from Maizen. I'm shocked. Just shocked. Dude, step away from the keyboard, breathe deeply, it will all be OK.

No one likes him or cares to hear from him.  Everything with Maizen is the sky is falling, everything.  Persoanlly, I try and avoid reading anything he posts, and I know I speak for a lot of others as well.  Sam said a lot of things this morning, nothing even close to the sky is falling maizen posts.  Bro take a hike already.

Until Michigan demonstrates that it can actually teach linemen how to block, run a competent offense, and earn the right to play in meaningful championship type games, they have to expect that the Alabama's, OSU's, Clemson's etc. of the world will have an edge when it comes to recruiting.  It's not rocket science.

Harbaugh is an excellent coach.  And I believe he will raise Michigan to a championship level eventually.  But at some point the team has to deliver and, especially for offensive line recruits, show that they have the ability to develop them.  In three years the best the line has looked was last year, and they were average at best.  This year the line has been a disaster, shown zero improvement, and is ulikely to show any before the season is over.  Why wouldn't he go to Alabama if given the chance?

I don't believe that's going to occur. 8-4 to 10-2 will be the pattern. Better than Oosterbaan and Bump, but won't achieve the heights Kipke did early in his career. Elite coaches don't have their sons coach running backs at schools with a RB tradition like Michigan.

My hunch is that Ekiyor has functionally been out the door since the MSU game, and the PSU game is the nail in the coffin.

Anyone hear Drevno this morning on 97.1?  Dude sounds like he has never yelled at a kid in his life.  This is a joke.

Hahahahahaha, good joke! Although, usually people say they have a joke before telling it, but oh well. Nonetheless, I can't wait to tell this to my co-workers:

Me: "Hey, did anyone here Drevno this morning on 97.1?"

Co-workers: "No, why?"

Me: "Dude sounds like he has never yelled at a kid in his life."

Collective histerical laughing ensues.

if he flips.  OL recruiting has been so f-in frustrating for the past 3-4 years.  Michigan has been losing out on too many top players.  Every other position, we've done pretty well.  But an elite road-grading, run blocking guard would have been a big help.

This is my shocked typing.  We need all the OL help we can get so this hurts but I'm way more worried about the complete lake of DT recruits and zero chance on any OT recruits who could even potentially sniff playing time next year.  If Newsome isn't back and good next years oline is fucked.  You'd think an open RT spot would allow an elite recruiter to get in with a guy like petit-frere or Rasheed Wallace who is an osu/psu battle out of MD, hell OSU is getting an official visit from Cade Mays since it looks like Butch could get fired at Tennessee, why aren't the coaches pushing hard for him?

Well that and the complete lack of truly elite talent in this class.  Having a small class is no excuse for having one top 50 guy.

Let's use your example, say the elite talent want to be guaranteed playing time, we promise it and then they get here and get beat out and start whining about it. Then you've built a reputation of promising playing time and not delivering. That doesn't sound like the culture and reputation I'd want in my football program. I'll take the "meritocracy schtick" over that any day.

If an elite talent is afraid of competition, then they're not actually that elite,  they're cowards.

But you're right, its definitely Drevno.

I was about to say that, but I'll give him a little benefit of the doubt since I don't have a Scout membership.

But according to the podcast, he is still coming up to visit for the Rutgers game and still had a planned official visit he was going to take for the OSU game. And his entire family was supposed to come. As of the podcast, that obviously hadn't changed because Sam never said anything about it.

Sam did make a statement that basically said that Alabama is in the pole position here, but those visits have not been cancelled. And he DEFINITELY said that this recruitment is not over.

And I mentioned this before, but for all the "Otis Reese" talk, Sam has made it clear as early as late last week that he is still recruiting hard for Michigan. A guy who is "most likely" committed to Georgia doesn't recruit for Michigan. Sam was definitely more positive speaking about him, so the sky hasn't fallen on that recruitment yet. Doesn't mean he's coming to Michigan, but it does mean that Michigan has as good of a shot as any to get the kid.

Honestly, it would probably be wise for Michigan to take two guards in this class. I just don't know if there are two decent guard prospects in this class who are interested. This is obviously a huge loss since we don't have any highly rated guards on our roster behind the current starters. Everyone around here seems to be wholly focused on tackles, but guard is quickly becoming an issue as well.

Just not sure if there is some issue with McCall outside of football (grades, etc....). As far as I remember, a lot of schools--including UM--basically chose to pass on him early in the process. I could be totally off base here, but that's how I thought he ended up at Kentucky.
