'General threats' issued against MSU athletics

Submitted by Mocha Cub on

Posting this here because even though the thread was made towards MSU athletics, the article does mention tomorrow's game. U-M officials are aware of the contents of a letter received by MSU. I don't think there's much other information out there right now. I know there's definitely some people living in the EL-area, so be safe.

The East Lansing and Michigan State University police departments have received letters making general threats against MSU athletic events. The letters do not provide specific information in regards to the event or manner of the threat.

The MSU football team is scheduled to play the University of Michigan on Saturday night in Ann Arbor. U-of-M officials are aware of the information disclosed by police about the threats, spokeswoman Diane Brown said in an email.

All jokes aside, it's sad. You can't go to a concert of sporting event without somebody waiting to do harm to innocent people. This is probably an internet troll, but it still crapy knowing people have to worry this.

It's interesting when I think about how relatively easy it was to get into places like stadiums and arenas and other large venues about 25 years ago as opposed to now. I hadn't been to the Masonic, for example, in ages before my wife dragged me to a Halsey concert, and that was my first experience with multiple metal detectors that was not a courthouse or and airport. It seems like more and more now that I am trying to get onto a flight everywhere I am.

First off, love the podcast you put out keep up the good work man. I'm only 24 so as far back as I can remember security has been ramped up for big crowds (post 9/11) it's just surreal after this latest attack in Las Vegas. My Fiancé dragged me into an Ed Sheeran concert on Tuesday, bomb sniffing dogs, tons of cops everywhere, medal dectors. Never thought AA would be a target, sad to see some idoit make stupid threats.

Odd you should mention, because I just had a conversation with an old girlfriend about this. Many years ago when she was flying back to Michigan, I got to meet her at the gate in the approved rom-com manner: bouquet of flowers, her running off the ramp to me, and the big kiss while people walked by and smiled. The whole thing looked like a scene from "Love Actually."

Now that scene would include metal detectors and x-ray machines and TSA agents. We both agreed that those things were absolutely necessary, but as she said, it would kill the mood a bit.

Yet the truth of the matter is we live in an era when we cannot evade the prospect of directly being affected by mass human slaughter. Safety ended when jet airliners plowed into landmarks filled with people.

If you could confiscate every known implement of death and destruction within our borders, fact is, there is sufficient demand for these implements and enough folks who intend to misuse them they will find a way to create terror given our porous, relatively unenforced borders; foreign suppliers will be only too happy to send them into our country for money, and our security apparatus cannot stop them all.

Best you can do is "game out" situations in terms of what actions you will undertake if a mass destruction event shows up where you are. However, the odds are slight that you actually suffer an event directly. Concern yourself with the phenomenon but don't be captive, you have only so many years in this life and you should strive to do those things which don't harm others and make you and your happy and fulfiled. Best we can do.

Porous unenforced borders. Maybe we should do something about those. Well Mr. Wardawg there is a guy who mentioned something about that but he was labeled a racist. I dont understand. Well Mr. Wardawg we have to leave avenues open for illegals and drugs to stream across our borders. That seems like that would put a strain on the economy and also make our country very vulnreable to attack from terrorist organizations. Yes Mr. Wardawg it does but some peolple are so embroiled in protest they seem to not care. Hmm so somebody could smuggle a stinger missile across the border and shoot it into a jumbo jet. Well Mr Wardawg they could do that quite easily, but I am sure there are organizations who plan on doing much worse than that. Im sorry but that just seems crazy to me. Yes Mr wardawg it seems like a temptation that I am sure won't be bypassed. Shame a lot of americans have to die because of political stupidity and ideology.

Now Now Mr. Wardawg you need to be a little more politically correct and sensitive. Tell that to the thousands who died in the towers.

Most of the dead (and wounded) from the Las Vegas shooting were Californians (34 of 58 dead), including a guy who I didn't know from San Clemente, the town next to mine. I read today in the local newspaper that a young woman in my neighborhood was among those wounded in LV, the bullet entered through her cheek and exited through her jawbone, taking a chunk of her face with it. The gofundme for her care and rehab is at $90K so far.

but sociopaths have been with us for a long time, even in the state of Michigan:

"Almost simultaneously, an explosion devastated the north wing of the Bath Consolidated School building, killing 36 schoolchildren and two teachers. Kehoe had used a timed detonator to ignite hundreds of pounds of dynamite and incendiary pyrotol, which he had secretly planted inside the school over the course of many months. As rescuers began working at the school, Kehoe drove up, stopped, and used a rifle to detonate dynamite inside his shrapnel-filled truck, killing himself, the school superintendent, and several others nearby, as well as injuring more bystanders. During rescue efforts at the school, searchers discovered an additional 500 pounds (230 kg) of unexploded dynamite and pyrotol connected to a timing device set to detonate at the same time as the first explosions; the material was hidden throughout the basement of the south wing. Kehoe had apparently intended to blow up and destroy the entire school."

Obviously this threat needs to be taken seriously in the interest of erring on the side of caution. However, it seems like most of the recent mass murder tragedies we've seen have occurred without warning.

Back in what had to be the fall of 2001, I went to a game in Spartan Stadium. Sometime in the third quarter, an airplane slowly approached the stadium at low altitude and lazily hung a left. The terror in the side of the stadium that could see this was palpable even to twelve year old idiot me.

the plane was actually the plane that would eventually take Penn State back home.  A United Airlines 737 being used as a charter, flying from O'Hare to Lansing before the eventual trip to Central Pennsylvania.

I guess the pilots wanted to get a good view of the stadium while the game was on-going (late 3rd quarter).  It was probably a cool view for them.  But it was highly unappreciated by most folk in my section that they decided to fly right over the top of the stadium at fairly low altitude.  Yikes.  The plane drew attention on both the PSU/MSU radio broadcasts (not the TV folk though).

I actually wrote a letter to the FAA on that one.  I got a response.  Bascially: "the plane was cleared for visual landing at Lansing's airport and could thus approach the runway any way it wanted."

STILL --- kind of surprising that sort of stuff isn't prohibited.  Lansing airspace isn't exactly NYC or next to LaGuardia, where planes have to fly over stadiums and such.

Your greatest concern is WTF is in that hotdog you are eating. Stadium or tailgate. Sure it's "all beef." They haven't found Hoffa yet but you might.

was a bad idea to begin with. I know it’s a stipulation in a contract so people can make money...shocker, but just seems like greed tends to lead things down the wrong path. High noon games for please.
