The hell does Wiltfong know?

he has Ekiyor going to Bama now.  A recent crystal ball as of tonight.  I know Sam said last week that he expects the good guys to be ahead in his recruitment even after his official visit to Tuscaloosa.

We're competing with Bama for Ekiyor AND Otis Reese is from the South. Talking about two different players in one sentence, sorry for the confusion. I thought it would have been obvious since Ekiyor is not from the South but Reese is.

stage of the game. It's still a long way before we officially lose those guys. Don't forget they have close friends on the team. If we do lose them we still have several targets. We have the hardest working man in show business on the job.

Shut down the program. It's over. Joking aside, I wouldn't want to go to school in Alabama or be stuck down here with a regional degree from Alabama if I were a minority. There are plenty of black people in the south but people are racist as hell down here.

I don't see the need for any alarm. OL is the hardest position to project according to common belief and our composite class ranking on 247 for 2018 looks good to me right now. There is plenty of time for the staff to get the class comprised of recruits we like if we lose a commit or two for whatever reason.

am really not worried about any 1 recruit. We will get some highly rated kids to replace any highly rated kids who leave. Getting to the playoff would sure help with that, either way I think it will be fine.

I don't understand all the hand wringing regarding recruiting. Look at Wisconsin Oline.  Not exactly all 5/4 stars but very productive.  I personally belive our issue is NOT talent. I am concerned about development of the talent.  I was very high on Drevno when he was first hired.  In fact, I thought he and Baxter (special teams) were the two best hires Harbaugh made. And as fate would have it, I think they were/are the two most dissapointing hires Harbaugh made against expectations. I was never high on Durkin and I was in a minority.  He may be a good head coach, but I never thought he was an "elite" D Coordinator.  I thought Frey would help this year. Not sure if the Tackle/TE and Guard/Center combo of Drevno/Frey is the answer.

One other REAL IMPORTANT note, not many Freshmen and second year players are ready for the grind to play consistent Oline.  In all candor, Michigan has only two years of recruiting Oline talent.  Year 3 and 4 will start to tell the tape.  MIchigan just hopes to keep it together until they get a cohesive unit.

I am confident the line will be better this week.  Bank on it. That said, I still would like to see Frey take over the Oline/TE's and Pep take over OC.

When Michigan is hoisting the National Championship trophy THIS YEAR the recruiting will take care of itself (a guy can dream can't he).

I have been very pleased with the direction of the program under Harbaugh. I am perplexed though as to why we have yet to field a solid offensive line. Everywhere Harbaugh has been he has been able to field a dominant offensive line. The offensive line is the hallmark of a Harbaugh lead team, yet here we are in year three and each year the offensive line has been an issue. If we could recruit and field a good offensive line I believe we would be next to unbeatable. Losing Emil would suck. Sure we can replace Emil in the recruiting class, but he would be the 3rd highly touted offensive linemen to go somewhere else after being committed to us for a lengthy amount of time. I really hope Emil stays in the class bc he is the type of dominant guard that we need to really establish Harbaughs identity. I’m not a big fan of coach Drevno. I’m not saying he should be fired, but with an offensive line coach like Greg Frey on the staff, I think we would be better than fine if Drevno were to go elsewhere. I know coach Harbaugh will make the right call going forward, I just wonder how much longer the OL can struggle before something is done to fix the issues.

are dead-on with this comment. I tell anyone who will listen that it's all about the o-line. There's no excuse to keep losing these guys, only someone not doing their job. Sounds like Drevno doesn't like to cement the deal. Service after the sale is Paramount, and he stops short. It appears.

OL is a very cerebral position and Stanford is full of nerds. That is a big reason why he got his OL up to par quicker there than he has here. Not saying Michigan isn't full of smart kids but Stanford admissions for athletes is more strict.

Yes, this is year three but he's only had two full classes. So you're asking a lot out 1st and 2nd year players. OL needs time to develop (learn, get bigger/stronger).

It's not that he's missing out on impact type guys (Onwenu, Bredeson, Filiaga, Ruiz) they just take time to season before they can maul everyone in their path. Alabama can do that because they've been recruiting and performing at a high level for many years. Our D has reloaded after basically losing everyone and soon the offense, and OL specifically, will do the same.

It is ONLY year 3 after an almost decade of shit. Like you said, the program IS headed in the right direction but some pieces take a little more time than others to get where we'd want them to be.

But you're right about the coaching, it has been underwhelming considering the success Drevno has had previously.

judging by many responses, not yours, some people took it to mean Steve Wiltfong dont know sh!t. others may see it as criticism of his judgment.  it's neither of those.  some people expect this not to come up in a forum and would rather I'd not brought it up?  like it or hate it recruiting a top OL or the loss of said recruit is news worthy of discussion.  for a second i considered, Gee whiz look at that a prediction for Emil to Alabama. no i didn't.

Another possible decommitment and unexpected commitment to elsewhere for Drevno recruits.

Devery Hamilton,  Isaia Wilson, and guess what, Dvontae Dobb's primary recruiter is also Drevno.

Ekiyor earlier told the media that Michigan is not contacting him enough. Something wrong with the way Drevno recruits.

if you're following this recruitment then you'll know that Sam Webb has stated that he loves Michigan and wants to go there.

This visit to Alabama was a measuring stick to see how it compares to UM.

Don't you think Alabama would have told him they churn out NFL lineman like no other program over the last 10 years?  You can do the math here, Michigan currently isn't at that level.

It's not a recruiting issue, I take it as a 'state of the unit' issue and currently Bama is a better fit.

FWIW, Brandon posted a thread a little while ago on the Rivals board that basically hinted that he's going to Bama and the M staff isn't too concerned with losing him.  No bag men, no under the table crap.  Staff seems to have cooled on him and the kid knows it.  Plus you can't fault a kid for wanting to play at Bama.

Maybe because this kid from Indiana grabbed the first high profile offer, which happened to be Michigan since it was regional, and parlayed that into being part of the Bama NFL Oline Machine because his concern was getting to the NFL; consequently, since his concern wasn't to play for Michigan the staff isn't concerned if he goes where he is most comfortable.

When UofM consistently sends multiple successfull Oline to the NFL again than the recruiting will pick up.......which should happen next year :)

Say publicly that they're solid, but also continue to take visits means they are very soft commits.  Never felt like he was truly committed to the good guys.  This one is not a shocker.  Bummer but not a shocker.

Wonder if Harbaugh will consider more staff changes at the end of this season? It isn't wrong to say the O-line has been underwhelming and cursed by injuries. At the very least Michigan needs to beat Staee. Losing a night game at home coming off a bye week would be a big black mark against this staff.

Bluetotheday

How is it a big black mark? If they lose and win out, would you take it? Damn right you willl. Harbaugh has/ is dealing with a first time starter at qb.... most I’m Importantly, who is the gold standard to coach Michigan?

You do realize we haven’t won a fucking thing in almost 20 years right? Yeah, we got Harbaugh and the energy that brought, aside form his antics you quickly become irrelevant if you’re not playing on the national stage in important games. We’re not playing in playoff and championship games, plain and simple. Hopefully those are in the near future but “better than we’ve gotten used to for the last decade” is not the same as championship football. You really think we have more to offer than Bama when it comes to the football side of things? If so then you don’t have a freaking clue what you’re talking about.

You do realize the 2016 and 2017 were pretty impressive classes and 2019 looks like it can also be impressive. 2018 just seems a little off, since it's not up to par with those two classes (as of yet) and possibly 2019. I didn't say anything about Bama or championships, so I feel like you're replying more to this thread than me specifically.

You’re right, it was probably more directed at the OP but it does apply to 2018 as well. The first two classes capitalized on the overall hype of the new hire and the apparent change in direction and potential upward trajectory of the program. 2018 will likely rest on the merits of that potential coming to fruition. We need to get there. Wins will make it a great class. 9-3, maybe not so much.
