On this day 90 years ago
Michigan Stadium opened and hosted its first game.
The 1927 season opener against the Ohio Wesleyan Battling Bishops.
Michigan took the game easily, 33-0.

Pictured above is fans entering from the Southeast. That grass area is where Crisler Center sits today.
The ticket. Note the price. That would be $28.22 in 2017 dollars per InflationCalculator.com

Its amazing to me that the stadium is built with footers already in place to carry a second deck...

I read the title and knew it was going to be something from WD. Then I checked how many of his "fans" show up - only 3 three negs so far! They must be asleep.

Yeah but how did they create the "wow" experience without jumbotrons, fireworks, and giant noodles?

Can you imagine being able to pull your black model T right up to the stadium and parking it on Stadium Blvd? What a cool photo.

So cool. Interesting you can see the pretty-much-like-today tunnel entrance in that 3rd picture. Looks about 75% capacity already back then (what was capacity, about 70k?). Yost was a visionary like no other.
Thanks for finding and sharing!

From wikipedia- over 80,000 capacity.
"The new stadium was then formally dedicated three weeks later in a contest against Ohio State on October 22. Michigan had spoiled the formal dedication of Ohio Stadium in Columbus five years earlier and was victorious again, besting the Buckeyes 21–0 before a standing-room-only crowd of 84,401."

Looking at the 1st pic, looks a lot like Notre Dame Stadium.
Oh, wait, they did model it after ours.....

This is why I hate them. They take our tradition, put their own spin on it, claim it to be their own, and get all the national credit for it.
Sometimes people forget that we were the ones who taught them how to play football in the first place...

Either the prices barely rose for a fuck of a long time or they had dropped at some point back down because around 1971 or so, and probably longer, the price for a ticket was 3 bucks! 2 for student tickets, but "student" tickets meant anyone college age or younger, so as kids we could get in for 2 bucks!
That is if you didn't tunnel under the cyclone fence in the SE corner by Crisler where it was on a little rise and half a body's worth was dug out in the dirt and then one guy pulls up the corner of the fence enough for you to crawl through!
How on earth did we never get caught?

You can see who voted by clicking the "voting details" above the OP. His Dudeness downvoted it, presumabely because he is a pretty vocal WD detractor.
This has been your quick-hitter segment on MGoBoard culture.

The student section is in the upper left corner. The empty section is probably the visitors.

Among the favorite Ann Arbor traditions, shown in the first minute or so, is Ann Arbor pedestrians walking right in front of a moving car without even looking at them. That tradition is longer-lived than I would have guessed.
Also, Henry Tappan Hall's daughter looks like she was born about 20 years too early. Had that whole Sylvia Plath thing going that would have played great in 1960s Ann Arbor.
Great video - thanks for posting WH (and to WD for starting the thread in the first place).

My grandmother was a student at UM and was at this game. She saved the ticket the stub and program and gave them to my my brother (who played football at UM) when he graduated in 1980. As a side note, she was also Bennie Oostebahn's english tutor that season.

87,000 people in 1927! Would be the 16th largest college stadium today, 15th if you don't include the Cotton Bowl with no home team there. More than Oklahoma, FSU, Clemson, and Wisconsin.
