What Is Your Michigan Football Game TV Viewing Threshold?

Submitted by UNCWolverine on

While I enjoy watching all Michigan football games on TV, I sometimes choose to attend a non-Michigan game in person over watching a Michigan game on TV. Just curious to get a feel for our fanbase. Am I just an outlier or are there others that are similar?

I've broken Michigan games into 3 Groups and I've broken non-Michigan games into 5 Categories. Here are their definitions:

Michigan Game Groups

A. Michigan vs Ohio State (Wisconsin, PSU, Florida, etc)

B. Michigan vs Iowa (MSU*, Minnesota, etc.)

C. Michigan vs Cincinnati (Air Force, Rutgers, etc.)

*MSU could be placed in Group A or B depending on the year.

Example Non-Michigan Game Categories

1. Hope vs Albion
2. Purdue vs Indiana
3. NR Northwestern vs #9 Wisconsin
4. #6 USC vs #14 Stanford
5. #1 Alabama vs #2 LSU

For each of the three Groups of Michigan games A, B, and C which is the lowest Category of “Non-Michigan Games” would you choose to attend? For example this Saturday I am choosing to attend USC/Stanford category 4 over watching Michigan game Group C live on TV.

For me there are only 4 Michigan games this season (Group A) where I would choose to stay home and watch on TV over attending any of the 5 Category games. I would probably choose Categories 3-5 in person over watching Group B games. For Group C I would probably go to all 5 Category games in person then watch the Michigan game on my DVR when I get home and/or Sunday.

So for me:

A0
B3-5
C1-5

What say you?

Patent lawyer and on the road often. If prepping for trial or similar, I watch the games in my hotel room while working. If for some other more flexible travel, I try to find a "Michigan bar" and watch the game with fellow Wolverine fans. I attempt to attend at least one Michigan game per season, not necessarily in Ann Arbor - N'western for example is an easy El ride from my downtown Chicago home and visits to other stadiums sometimes coincide with travel plans. I prefer watching games on TV.

I own a beautiful new 65-inch Sony and only use it to watch Michigan or stream films. I haven't watched typical TV programs in 20+ years although I have a soft spot for well-done documentaries.

For the Cincy game, I'm home and will be repairing the hinges on my kitchen cabinets because the doors are beginning to pull out as the wood has softened over time. I expect to cheer and swear out loud during the game. Hope this informs, why you are interested I have no idea.

p.s. I had a good time meeting up with fellow Wolverines at the Brown Dog in Telluride last Saturday and watching the Florida game together. Go Blue!

I usually go to one or two non-M games each year. If M has a game that day, no big deal--I'll set the DVR and watch it later. I!ve never had to do that for a really big M game though, like OSU or top-15 opponent. Not sure I would.

I guess I could have saved a lot of time by asking would you rather go to #1 Alabama @ #2 LSU or watch Cincinnati @ Michigan on TV. Seems like pretty everyone would choose Cincinnati on TV.

Umm...I'll have to leave the house before UM-Cincy is done because I'm going to the Nebraska-Oregon game. Does that answer the question?

This weekend. I will miss my sons 7year old football game, and the Michigan game. But thats the sacrifice of having to provide for my family, and I wouldn't change a thing. That being said I will watch both recording tomorrow evening.

I've never chosen to go to a non-michigan game rather than watch a michigan game, but then I don't give even a hint of a shit about the local teams here in San Diego (plus they play later than Michigan typically even if I did) and i'm far too lazy to drive up to LA for a USC/UCLA game.  I'll, on rare occasions, do non-football things instead of watch Michigan if I have no choice, but if I'm watching football, it's Michigan.

I'm weird, I prefer watching the games on TV to being at them, so this holds no temptation for me, but I suppose I'd probably miss a Michigan game to get laid if that was the Sophie's choice I was presented with.

I generally only miss games for reasons outside of football. Such as, I missed the Florida game because I was backpacking in the Wallowa Mountains in Oregon. It was a long 4-day weekend for me, it's something I've wanted to do since I moved here, and it was the weekend everyone that wanted to go on the trip was available.

I will pretty much always watch the Michigan game live unless there is a pressing reason that I cannot do so, and that has happened several times in my life.

There are many times when I've been out of town and within earshot of a football game and managed to score tickets, but I've done that around Michigan games too.

That is the one thing I will not miss.  On television of course, only been to a dozen games in AA.  If we have to leave town for that Saturday game, I just go to a local bar and have them put it on.  Or stay in the hotel room with some beverages.  Last game I remember missing was the second half of was Iowa 1997, I was best man in a wedding party.  I know some fans have things to do during the games at times.  That's ok.  I just can't miss them.

I thought this was asking how many times you re-watch the game as it plays on BTN/ESPN during the week. The answer is nearly every time for a win. I don't actually watch the broadcast, but it reminds me to watch the dvr if I'm not already. There are only 12 of these per year (yes, 15 we're winning it all)

I live 40 miles east of Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge and I'd never miss a Michigan game for LSU. I've actually been to more games at The Big House than Tiger Stadium. No Ragrets

I'm planning to get pummeled by a monster hurricane (NTM), but still sneak in the M-Cincy game and as much of the very high quality evening slate as The Lord allows before removing electricity from the equation.

When I was in college, there were a number of times I went to my school's games and kept track of the UM game by getting texts from friends back home (before I had a smartphone). I also went to UVA's opener last year, which was more for my stepkids than anything. I don't go to a lot of games though so most of the time I just have something else going on (like when we went camping last weekend and I found the score out Monday night). I HATE missing games, but life changes and I can't watch as many as I used to.

Michigan football only plays 12ish weeks a year and you rather watch hope vs Albion? Get the fuck outta here with that shit

If I can't watch Michigan...
I stream Michigan.
If I can't stream Michigan...
I listen to Michigan.
If I can't listen to Michigan...
I have one very anxious and shitty day.

I don't think I'd ever miss Michigan, unless it was a true cupcake game and I had a premier type opportunity.

I think that rarely ever happens though, given that Michigan's cupcake games are 9/10 times at Noon ET whereas marquee games that I'd otherwise attend would be later. Michigan vs. Ohio State is essentially the only marquee game in the nation played at Noon ET.

I'd never in a million years miss Michigan to tailgate for another game. So if the premier game was at 3:30PM, I'd be watching Michigan until the fourth quarter if it was a blowout and the end if it was close.

It's nauseating to me that you'd, according to your example, go to Northwestern vs. Wisconsin over a potential Michigan vs. Iowa matchup. That literally means you're not a Michigan fan, because frankly any non-partisan observer would rather go to the UM-Iowa game; it's objectively better in terms of the programs involved, in addition to including our favorite team.

I live in Los Angeles and was considering the USC-Stanford matchup, but it's not worth it to me given all the other games I'd have to miss (OSU vs. OU, ND vs. UGA, Auburn vs. Clemson, BYU vs. Utah, etc.). Wish that game was next weekend when there won't be a good primetime slate.

Michigan games take precedence over any other game. Doesn't matter who Michigan is playing. Doesn't whether there is another marquee game on. Doesn't matter whether I have the chance to go to a marquee game. There are only 12-15 Michigan games per year. I watch them all.

I  will always watch the UM game.  The quality of other games doesn't matter.  I'd watch UM vs. a DII school on a small TV over watching the Super Bowl in-person.  But people have different priorities and I wouldn't question someone else's fandom for it.

Michigan will always take priority. Everything else comes 2nd. Even if for some God forsaken reason we started 0-6 I will still be watching this team instead of whatever the "hot" game is that week.

I get it.  We are all obsessed.  But I think what we all have to realize sooner or later is that the priority list is:

1) Family
2) Michigan
3) Others

There's just no time to invest in attending random college football games.

I am hoping the OP started drinking in anticipation of the home opener tomorrow because his post completely lost me.  Saturdays have and always will be for Michigan Football!! Go Blue!
