Preseason Playoff Predictions

Submitted by GVSUGoBlue on
Tomorrow is the kickoff of the D1 college football season! So let's take a shot at the final 4. Media consensus appears to be 1. Bama, 2. Ohio State, 3. USC, 4. Florida State. However, the runner ups in each of those conferences all have legit shots at reaching the playoff: LSU, Michigan/PSU, Washington, Clemson. Who makes the final 4? I pick Bama, USC, Florida State, and Michigan in that order with Florida State winning it all.

South Florida would have to beat all of it's opponents by 40+ points and that probably still wouldn't be enough. They play nobody. Absolutely nobody. No ranked teams on their schedule.

They would need to go undefeated and have at least three conference champions to all have two losses. Any undefeated or one loss conference champions are jumping USF even if USF is undefeated. Absolutely no questions asked.

A NY6 bowl is a possibility for them, but playoffs wise, they need an undefeated season and chaos upon chaos.

Stephenrjking, you are correct.  CFB NEVERS follows "chalk", so it is fool's gold to go with Bama, OSU, USC, and FSU.  So who does break through?

I'll go with Michigan, Auburn, FSU, and Stanford.  One favorite and 3 probables.....

Michigan beats OSU to get through (They lose one to either PSU or Wisky, but get the division because they only have the 1 loss in conference)...

Auburn beats Bama to knock them out....

Standford beat USC in the PAC12 championship to knock them out.....

I agree that chalk is the least likely scenario. 1 or 2 of these favorites will have a couple breaks go against them and lose at least 2 games. It's more likely only 2 of the favorites get in. There's always crazy things that will happen.

It'd be crazy to see Texas enter the discussion. Herman quickly turned around a Houston program into national relevance. If he finds the right guy on the Texas roster to play QB (found a WR to do so at Houston), a little momentum and some talented kids who are hungry for success (3 straight losing seasons) could make them a contender.

1 - Alabama

2 - Michigan/Ohio State winner (I think Michigan)

3 - FSU

4 - USC

disclaimer - if OU beats Ohio State in the shoe they replace USC

I'm usually an uber-optimist, but you guys are flying past me on expectations here.

My "best case scenario" for this season is 2 losses, including the bowl game. I don't expect that to be enough to win the Big Ten and certainly not enough for the CoFoPO. I'm also entirely at peace with that. Michigan could go 9-3 and 5-3 in conference and I'd be all smiles. Because that would require zero readjustment (in terms of projection) for this program's ceiling and trajectory under Harbaugh. This isn't exactly hard-hitting analysis, but 10-2 would be just...the funnest thing.

If Michigan were to vastly overachieve and get to the CoFoPO this year, with this youth, after that record-setting NFL exodus, that would imply to me that Harbaugh has (highly realistic) Saban-level dynasty potential.

And since Saban is the only one in CFB history to hit at that level (and that's just viewing NC concentration and not even to re-interpret ancient NC's for the increased CFB parity in the BCS-and-after epoch), you'll have to forgive me for considering the arithmetic of this possibility quite unlikely.

I believe in the first topic my picks were Alabama, o$u, Clemson and u$c. For some reason I forgot Watson left. So I would like to change Clemson for Louisville.

Bama v $c in the final. Bama taking it all.

I'm positive about being worried that this young secondary is gonna get challenged, repeatedly so, until it proves otherwise.  I'm positive that our DL (a strength) is gonna help as much as they can. I'm especially positive now, after reading today's WR/TE report, Indiana now scares the hell out of me (esp given they follow state and precede happy valley). I'm damn sure positive that I'm nowhere near as optimistic as I was last year against @Wiscy followed by the game (and being at home really doesn't help in cover2).

Week to week, that's how I'm looking at this season. Playoffs be damned, I hope we win game one next week.

please just let us ruin whatever chance OSU has in getting into the playoffs this year. If that propels us to the B1G championship or only gives us our 7th win I don't care at this point.  I want to finally be able to watch a highlight video of the game or watch a 2018 pump up video with all kinds of plays in this year's The Game and have a smile on my face.  This has been going on too long.....

What my heart tells me:

FSU

Auburn

Michigan

USC

Michigan wins it all and gets revenge for their Orange Bowl loss last year.

What my head tells me:

Bama

OSU

USC

FSU

OSU finds a way to beat Bama again and everything is pain.
