Jim McElwain Press availability: May play multiple QBs

Submitted by jimmyshi03 on

Just saw a couple tweets from Florida beat guys. Some interesting stuff.

Gators coach Jim McElwain says all three QBs could play. "I think there's some things they all bring to the table that's really good."

McElwain: "We haven't gotten into Michigan prep at all. When you guys get their roster let me know who we're playing." #Gators

Mac says it's not disconcerting that they don't have a starting quarterback because he "likes how they're playing."

Mac on Michigan: "A couple years ago they physically dominated us."

This just does not seem like a good matchup for the Gators in week 1.  They are down their best WR and don't have a clear #1 at QB.  I can see a few big mistakes being made against our pass rush and Don Brown's schemes.

serious question: how does UF even game plan against Michigan? last year's team was so different from 2015 team both on offer se and defense. now there are rumors of 4 WR sets on offense, and a defense without Peppers. how do you even begin to guess what is going through Harbaugh mad scientist mind? he has had 8+ months to scheme. Florida is screwed.

I didn't take the roster comment as bitching, but rather simply a joke. Thought it was pretty funny, too, given how worked up the media has been about the issue. I mean, he clearly said they haven't started prepping for us anyway.

So they're all either really, really good, and he can't make a decision because they'll all move the ball.  Or they each suck ass and he's not sure which delivers the least amount of suck ass.

I'll go with the 'suck ass' option...

The fact he is talking about the roster thing tells you that it's at least occupying his mind. Mind games.

I just saw the sharkanado stuff and I think I lost some brain cells in the process. That stuff is hazardous to your health LOL!!

I don't know if he was joking or not (I presume he was), but if McElwain legitimately has not started game-planning for Michigan yet because Harbaugh hasn't released his roster, he's going to be fired a lot sooner than I thought he'd be. That kind of excuse would never fly if they went out and lost again.

It's not that hard to take a look at last year's roster, remove the guys who graduated, watch the tape from the spring game, and just fill in the holes from there. Hell, you could probably get an intern or a GA to do that for you.

As far as them trotting out multiple QBs next week, I presume that's a good thing as presumably no one has been good enough to go out and claim the position for themselves. No go-to QB means the chemistry with the remaining wideouts likely suffers, which takes a little more pressure off of our inexperienced secondary. Hope to see the DL play mercilessly next week.

I had long thought that this will be a low-scoring game that we win by about two scores and pull away from late.

I am feeling more and more confident about this game, verging on believe that we will win very comfortably.

Florida has:

- Lost their best player to suspension

- No idea what they're doing at QB, probably going with a guy who led a Bottom 30 Offense last year

- Their best OT still sitting out of contact with a nagging injury and their 3rd OT suspended.

- A starting DB also sitting out due to injury

- Jim McElwain for a coach

We have:

-lost our ENTIRE SECONDARY to graduation / NFL

-lost a few key DL (I know, still loaded, but still a loss of experienced talent)

-to play a LB group lacking an upper classman

-lost our top two receivers

-lost our primary RB

-lost 2 of our OL to graduation / NFL and likely going to be starting a freshman or two

-lost our kickers

-lost our primary returner

I am not saying that we will lose, but on paper, we lost more than they did, and it isn't even close.

It is possible that this is an elaborate misdirection that McElwain is using to try to obscure his true plan for the game; perhaps he knows exactly who the starter is and is building packages around him that Michigan will have no way to prepare for.

It is more likely that the QB situation in Gainesville is, at least, rather unsettled, and perhaps even catastrophic.

Doesn't mean this is a guaranteed win, but it sure is a plus for a Michigan team which has some questions in the defensive backfield. I expect our DBs to give up some big plays, perhaps even one to Florida. But it doesn't look like Florida is going to be able to sustain offense with much consistency, basically forfeiting their ability to attack one of our two (along with OL) key weaknesses.
