OT: What do you do for a living?
With the offseason here, I thought it would be interesting to read what members on this board do for a living. Student, Professional, Retiree, Entrepenuer...
Do you like what you do? Wish you would have done things differently when you were a student searching for a career choice?
You aren't going to see a lot of honest answers on a website where a lot of the frequent visitors are some of the most prominent and successful individuals on the planet. There are far more "wal-mart" wolverines than there are alumni-fans and you likely won't see too many "factory worker", or "fast food worker" responses to this.
I'm a wal-mart wolverine. I'm a veteran, college student, in my 30's, working at a shit retail chain, and studying to become an Industrial Electrician.
This post seems unnecessarily negative about your situation. Sure, you're not where you want to be right now but the future is looking good for you. Keep your head up, you'll be in a great spot a few years from now.
Thanks for the encouraging words! Seriously!
But, I'm not actually negative about my situation. It's not the path I would've taken if I could do it all over again BUT life is good and my situation is ascending.
is an industrial electrician. Stick with it. Pays well and is a good job. In demand as well, especially if you get the whole "master's electrician" thingy.
I would say honest, sincere---two precious and rare commodities on the internet, and on this blog.
Which field? I am an immigration Attorney in Columbus
Lawyer. Sometimes I like it, sometimes I hate it (as you can likely tell by how often I am on here).
Just a regular, non-fancy, non-boutique, and non-niche attorney lol.
Is this a jugalo joke or a work-a-day joke?
This made my day.
Just got out of Michigan Staee.... Penitentiary!
Quite a spirited debate broke out over the eternal "do you drain the new batch of fries before the ones in the warming tray are all given out" and of course "should you ring the doorbell again or simply knock harder" when the customer doesnt take the delivery right away.
Rakesh, is that you?
You watch CNN? I have boycotted CNN, ESPN, and all other major TV networks. The only channel I watch anymore is FOX Sports Detroit when the Tigers are on.
I'm Urban Meyers pimp...
I went to UM for education, spent 14 years working in Alabama running a training division for a software company before getting downsized in the Great Recession in 08-09. Moved to Iowa and did some training and tech writing in the Ag industry before landing at U of I hospital, where I create distance learning modules and maintain internal websites for the EMR system (among other "stuff").
Always wanted to write novels, but life got in the way.
I teach high school physical education and adjunct exercise science teacher at a small college. When the kids are cool I love my job, when the kids are a pain in the butt I hate my job. Motivating kids to be physically active today is hard and can limit how much we can really do to make class exciting. Half the time I can't wait to leave school so I can go lift for 2 hours.
Anyone need a loan?
I am a teacher during the week from Sept.-June. During the weekends I am a janitor cleaning offices, during the summer I mow lawns, and I also officiate sports (mainly basketball) with what time is left.
I work for a nonprofit that helps kids play by working with community groups and cities to build playgrounds and other creative play areas. Our 200 person, all volunteer playground builds are the most visible thing we do. We start in the morning with an empty lot and by 2:30 the site is completely transformed. We've had a lot of sports teams and athletes, including many former Michigan players, volunteer on our projects. We also partner with the NBA to build a playground tied to the All Star game. I manage the team who works with our funding partners. It's definitely not what I envisioned for my life back in college but I absolutely love my job.
Sounds cool. Where/what non profit?
It's called KaBOOM! (kaboom.org). The organization is based in DC but we work nationwide. I love it. I've been here a long time and I don't see myself going anywhere else anytime soon.
I live in pontiac, and we are looking for a non-profit exactly like yours to build a community park in one of the most economically disadvantaged areas in the city (already have the land). Currently trying to raise $15, 000.00 to complete. Any ideas to help?
As luck would have it, we actually have $15,000 grants available right now for qualifying community projects. Visit kaboom.org/grants/build_it_yourself. It says the deadline has passed for round 2 but you can still apply for consideration. If you have specific questions, you can email [email protected]. You can say Sarah referred you. Hopefully it's a fit!
I pretty much have my dream job. I work on large and small corporate events around the country and world. As a independent contractor I set my own schedule. All my expenses are paid for and I get to stay at the best hotels and resorts.
I retired from one of the largest fortune 500 companies at the age of 42 and took this job to fill my time and there are many times I have to pinch myself and say I cant believe they are paying me to do this..Ie 7 weeks at the Great Barrier Reef..5 weeks in Padagonia and the Anartic and others like them.
The only down side is sometimes Im gone for 3-7 weeks from my family but weve all adjusted and I bring them with me sometimes when schedules and school allow.
All that, and still terrible spelling.
Attempt to be world's best dad by night and on weekends
I work for Vandelay Industries as a Latex salesman.
Mid- to High-end custom home builder.
I love my job (most days). I've been wanting to be a custom home builder since I started college over 10 years ago.
your mom
I study the windsharks and how they interact with the methane-based ecosystem here. The field work can be pretty dull, but it's enlivened by the periodic attacks of nightreapers looking for hosts. You gotta keep your head on a swivel or you'll end up paralyzed and being eaten slowly by nightreaper larva.
I can honestly say after reading that description that I have 0.00% idea what in the hell you do but it does sound dangerous and kinda cool.
it was a reference to the movie Alien
Not after you regain consciousness only to find a hatch of larva eating their way out of your nutsack. Otherwise the job's OK, although I'd really rather run the fleshpot dolls back inSystem on Titan.
Clinical social worker at a cancer center
That answer usually ends most conversations
I appreciate that. I kid because either people wish to change the subject awkwardly or they start telling me about their own cancer experience or about a family member. I love what I do though. Some days are sadder than others but it is by no means a "depressing" job which is what many people assume.
