OT-Any LOST Fans?
Lost for me has become maybe my favorite tv show of all time. It's just a awesome giant long saga of great sci-fi and good writing. The acting is good 90% of the time.
So far this season has been great. The only thing I haven't liked is that there are a lot of main characters who have nothing to do. They are just sitting in their respective camps waiting for the man in black and Jacob to have it out.
The best one of the season was Richard's story on how he ended up on the island. It may have been the best one ever, a top 3 for sure.
So any fans? I will be watching tonight with my wife like always and eating the same Lost dinner. Tonight should be good since I expect it to be centered around Desmond, one of my favorite characters. Plus he has all the time travel story lines which I like.
Lost is like chicken, if you don't like it there is something wrong with you.
I am a Lost addict. This fall, while waiting for Lost to restart, I watched the entire series again.
The only problem with the series is that it is almost impossible for people to join in midstream. I have friends that only wanted to see it a couple seasons in, and it makes no sense to them. You really need to start at the beginning.
That said, these last few episodes are pure joy for me.
I missed the first 3 and picked up watching live in season 4 during the writer's strike. I then went back and watched 80% of season 1 just before this season started. I know I missed a lot in seasons 2 and 3 but I don't think I'm really in the dark on anything.
You probably understand a lot of it pretty well, but you are probably missing out on a good amount of detail and backstory.
Season 2 might be my fav since it has a lot of time travel and the hatch! Check it 2 out if you get a chance. Pure gold.
yeah, now that I think about it I must have somehow caught a bit of those seasons as I do remember seeing quite a bit of the hatch, Desmond's intro, the numbers that he had to enter, etc.
I picked it up mid-stream, and have seen some earlier episodes. To get caught up, I actually read the episode summaries from each episode online- lostpedia or whatever it's called, and I think wikipedia. I also am now hooked, and read the recaps on EW.com and stuff. Great show; the episode where we got Halpert's backstory was outstanding- my favorite one in my brief experience (a couple seasons) watching the show.
It IS a great show, for sure. For me, though, nothing tops "The Wire," which I also picked up midstream- saw seasons 4,5, then 1,2,3, and still thought it was amazing.
I bet going back a lot of things connected. I watched some old ones on G4 and a ton of stuff made sense. You are also right about jumping in the middle. You have to watch from the start.
Having netflix streaming is pure awesome for anyone who hasn't seen it since you can just watch them all in a row with out stopping.
I actually got Netflix jus to see lost. I have pooh-poohed the show until this season, and do I regret doing that. I actually saw all the season leading up to this one in less than one month. I got turned onto the show from a podcast I listen to called Pretty Good Podcast, which is an offshoot of the old KLSX 97.1 FreeFM Tim Conway Jr. Show. The host of the show always talked about Lost and how it was a great show, while the other host caught up to the show just right before the current season premiered.
Hulu has all past 5 seasons and every ep from this season available to watch online

Should've used the "numbers" as numbers instead of real football numbers.
That's a great idea but the paint was used for post I wrote on my blog this morning so it matches my post more then lost I guess.
I watched The Constant (one of the best all time episodes IMO), the episode with a friend when they auction of the journal of Hanso that related back to the black rock. After that I was hooked and went back and watched the first 3 seasons online in 2 1/2 weeks to catch up. What a great choice, this show is incredible, and having the episodes available online to watch for free is a great choice by ABC.
Agreed, the Richard Alpert (sp?) story was very well done. It was like a 30 minute movie within the show. It was also one of the most anticipated storylines to unravel as the writers have kept his back story such a mystery for 5+ seasons.
The flash sideways has also grown on me. I enjoy the parallel universe and the subtle, and not so subtle (see Sawyer as a cop, what?) differences in the characters.
Yeah Richard Alpert's story and The Constant episode with Desomond and Penny have probably been the best two episodes
but I agree with you. I honestly think that Lost is the best commercial TV series (as opposed to movies or things like HBO series) that has ever been on television. I can't think of another that even comes close IME.
Seinfeld has to be up there somewhere
Probably 2nd to me. But while I love it and still watch it, it never had the "holy shit" aspect that Lost has, not the fascination aspect of trying to figure out the answers.
I love Seinfeld. Greatest comedy ever. Still watch the reruns whenever I have time. What I have started to notice over the last few years is that it is becoming dated to the point of notice. No cell phones, the clothes and hairstyles. It hasn't detracted from it's greatness, just saying it's becoming more and more noticable with each passing year.
I actually watched some Seinfeld this morning and thought the same thing about cell phones. People from the next generation won't be able to appreciate the show because all they remember is a world with cell phones. They are so used to getting a hold of someone at any time.
Thats how I feel about MASH. I just could never get into it since it was past my time. I am sure younger people will feel that with Seinfeld as the years go on.
I've noticed it as well... so many of the storylines revolve around waiting for a phone call, or not being able to get a hold of someone, or checking messages to hear from someone, etc. Still legendary television, but it hasn't aged as well as others.
I'm going to be watching the episode where Jerry and George try to exchange the answering machine tape in the woman's apartment that George is dating with my daughter and she is going to look at me and ask, "Dad, what is an answering machine?"
A couple more that don't age:
- Jerry videotaping Death Blow for Kramer's sketchy friend to bootleg
- George getting pissed in the Chinese restaurant when he can't use the payphone.
- The 3-way calling fiasco where they hear through the lines
- The IQ test. When was the last time you took a hard copy IQ test?
I won't kill the show any more. I like it too much. I'll use it as a history lesson for my kids.
I have heard that Desmond is going to be one of the main characters of the final season (but who knows) so I am glad he is finally arriving. I disagree about the time travel stuff (I hate it) but it is more of a personal thing I guess. I loved (LOVED) the first three seasons of LOST and then just thought the other three were good not great. As you stated...this season is great again. The Richard episode definitely was one of the best ever. What I love about the show is that you never know what is going to happen. I was told that in the original pilot episode, they were going to kill Jack at the end but the reviewers hated the idea...but that is the kind of stuff I love about it...you just never know who will be killed next.
that say that a lot of characters we know are going to die
Or, maybe they are already dead...
My only complaint is that this season is going by too fast.
I'm excited for tonight's episode.
The only thing that concerns me is that they keep adding new mysteries and WTFs, which is all fine and good, but there are only 7(?) episodes left.
The ending can't possibly match expectations. I hope it does but at this point I'm in self preservation mode.
The way they state it is "only 7 episodes left until the two hour series finale". That would indicate 9 hours of lost left.
I thought the same thing when the introduced the Tina Fey look alike character Zoe. It just made me yell at my TV, “Nooo not another candidate!!!”
I'm glad that wasn't the case.
my only problem with this season is that 5 year long questions are being answered in single episodes. it's a little too tidy...
I love Lost. You could tell that they wanted to do Richard's story for a long time. Once this whole thing is done and over with, I am going to go back and watch every episode again so that I can see where they put in those glaring hints as to how it's going to end.
Who do you think will take over for Jacob? I would say Hurley because of the whole talking to the dead thing, but I don't think he has enough backbone. It will probably end up being Jack. That would be the logical but boring choice.
I think Jack is just too obvious a choice.
Or no one takes over? I think the world might end(Hell is opened up) or the side flashes meet with the current time line causing a Paradox and thus the world ending. The last episode is called "The End".
This is something that crossed my mind as well. Something that I just thought of though...What if they stop the smoke monster, but in the alternate reality where they never go to the island, the smoke monster destroys them all. That would be an ending.
That is a pretty interesting theory. Do you think that the current time line on the island is somewhat connected to the flash sideways or do you think they are independent of one another. I used to think that the flash sideways were the lives of the people once they got off the island.
What about the idea that the Sideways world is this alternate reality that they can go back to/flash to once/if they get off the island? No, that probably isn't it.
In reading stuff about the show and watching it, it seems that the Sideways world may be just an alternate reality- one they could've had if they'd never gone to the island, or if their lives had not been predestined to take them to the island, etc.
Oh man, what am I doing? There are so many theories on what the Sideways world is, it's almost impossible to say. I read the stuff at EW.com and Alan Sepinwall's blog about the show, as well as at chud.com, and suffice to say, there are a ton of plausible/possible explanations. . . which is one of the things that makes the show so great- the "what does it all mean?" aspect.
Lost is the one show where, when watching, we'll pause in the middle to take in what just happened and ask each other questions. Who, what, huh? It moves so fast sometimes that it takes a second to digest what the hell just happened. I love TiVo. Watching this show live would be a pain in the ass.
Great, great show. One of the best ever.
love it...if you don't, I would recommend reading the guy over at entertainment weekly's episode review...typically a long read, but makes me appreciate the show even more, or at least the writers and the layers of literary, historical and cultural items that they weave throughout the show's themes and plots.
That is a must read after each episode. Also if you have time check out zap2it.com's Lost write up. It is equally good.
I'll admit it. I've been hooked from the 1st episode.
Pains me to watch knowing the series is coming to an end!
It does suck that the end is near but it's a show I can't wait to watch all the way through with my kids some day. LOST will be the show of the 00, sorta like seinfeld for the 90s
I am a Losty and totally addicted to the show. I must say that I am excited to see Desmond back. The island was not done with him yet?
One of the great/ sometimes hair pulling things about Lost is that they answer questions with about 5 more questions.
I thought Ab Aterno was one of the best episodes this season. It answered many questions about Richard Alpert.
I also love the short cameos of old characters in the flash sideways.
But if I knew you were some freak of nature who could turn into a deadly cloud of black smoke at a moment's notice, and then you and I started hanging out for hours at a time, well DON'T YOU THINK AT SOME POINT I'D BE LIKE "DUDE, SO HOW THE HELL DO YOU TURN INTO BLACK SMOKE AND KILL PEOPLE??"
That is all.
One character that I want answers to the most is probably Walt. I thought he played such a major role in the show, but there has been no mention of him thus far.
I also found it funny that the actor that played Walk had a growth spurt in between seasons. People would say, "I just saw Walt...and he looked taller."
the one part I haven't liked is that they are getting rid of characters that a lot of people like. I was a huge Locke fan but now he's some weird black smoke guy. And I loved Sieed(spelling?). But now even he is a different personality. I like where they went with the story I just wish they didn't ruin some of the great characters they spent 5 years developing.
Take Locke for instance, I sure hope he comes back because think about all the stuff he did and uncovered. Will we ever find out why he was handicap and then wasn't on the island? Or did that side of the story die with him? Obviously there are questions to be answered, but I hope they do answer them rather than leave that side of the story forever dead.
And then they are leaving characters just waiting, as you said. It seems to me that they developed all these people for 5 years and now they are just throwing them to the side. Heck even Ben, once a great mystery, is now nothing. Did they ever explain how he just went to wherever he wanted to get the other cast members? Why doesn't he just do that now? My problem is that I'm coming up with more questions as old questions from the first season get answered.
They have explained Locke's handicap (although if you're question is did his accident happen differently in the new sideways reality, that is a good question).
Ben, while I agree has been reduced in his importance, was able to get off the island as the others had access to the sub.
The biggest question for me that I don't think will ever be answered is why were all of the pregnant women dying (i.e. why was Juliet needed on the island?)
They explained his handicap - how he got that way - what I'm saying is they never explained why he was fixed on the island.
