I realize this is complete heresy but should we root for Sparty tomorrow?

Submitted by jbrandimore on
I haven't watched much of Kansas this year, but we have to match up better with Sparty than Kansas, right? By the time MSU and Kansas tip off, we will already know if we are in the Sweet 16. Before we reflexively say "no way" do consider that the Spartys root against us, even against their self interest. I haven't convinced myself to root for Sparty, but I do think we need to emotionally prepare for this just in case it's necessary. Thoughts?

If we knock off Louisville then I will root for Sparty to get Kansas out of our way..If we lose to Louisville then of course I will root against Sparty.. I can hold my nose and root for Sparty if its OUR best interest...

This board can disregard most of our season because of our recent run, yet assume MSU would be the same team we blasted weeks ago. If they beat Kansas, they are going to be extremely confident and looking for revenge. I'd rather play Kansas.

Where your coming from. No way I'm rooting for them or blohio, or honestly any one else in any other sport though. Your argument does make sence, but I can't bring myself to do it.

Re MSU.......Apathy Indifference Irrelevance plays upon their Inferiority Complex. I like to pretend that I didn't know they were in the Tournament. Then I apologize and say "I'm sorry I was a little consumed with the excitement of the Big Ten Championship. Did you see it? It was pretty exciting, wasn't it? What a great story?" I then seg way to M Basketball and make them talk about it, and acknowledge it. Secretly, I have MSU n ND losing early in my brackets since I want them to lose at everything, especially in the Court (room), and on the Court. Enjoying the silence from Columbus and Bloomington. The Sound of March Crickets in Lansing would be music to my ears.

I would actually root for them in the post season. But since their football run their alums have become insufferable asses. Add to that both Dantonio and Izzo are dickheads.

Now I root against them .............. with a passion unknown to mankind!

Rooting can involve perspective if you so choose. Can you imagine the gnashing of teeth in EL when we hang a f4 banner in their face that we beat them head to head for? It would drive them insane for a school that is "supposed" to be better at bball. Plus anytime some sparty was annoying you about bball you could just go "remember that time..." that would never get old. The sec we lose hate on sparty but me personally wants an epic setup that e have minimal downside for

And we burn heretics.  The good news for you is that we're civilized.  The tradition is that you get a repreve if you recant. We're not Bloody Mary.

Penalties under Rule III, Title XII, include, but are not limited to: -Fan card revoked for two weeks -Creating and sending support letter to Mark Dantonio -Forceful submission to view 4 hour loop of punt debacle Now, do you still want to root for MSU? AM I THE ONLY ONE WHO GIVES A SHIT ABOUT THE RULES

then we will trounce Kansas. I don't think MSU has a prayer in that game. Miami was a horrible team and a gift from Hollis to ensure his team could win a game

As long as Michigan is winning, it doesn't matter what Sparty does.  It is always win-win for us. If MSU wins, our quality of wins goes up and the Big Ten has more prestige.  If they lose...

If you don't root for something that would benefit Michigan in the long run, you are dumb. I don't understand people who obsess about another school losing every game. That sounds like a Sparty mindset to me.

On November 22, 2015, I wanted OSU to win in the Meteor Bowl against MSU to ensure a chance for a B1G Championship. Never again. Fuck OSU and MSU. They both should lose every fucking game in every fucking sport. And when they play eachother, both should mutually forfeit at the exact same time so that they both lose.

Sparties are pesky like a gnat you just swoosh them away. OSU is a fucking bear on the campground, shoot to fucking kill. They can be a nuisance or they can be down right life threatening. Fuck all that is OSU and expect the same from them.

Did you guys not watch The Game this year they hate us so badly that even though they have this back breaking  painful streak going against us, they knew that they would have to pull out all the stops to beat us and broke every fucking rule in sportsmanship to do it. Bringing in fans to referee The Game. Is there nothing holy to these hillbilly truck drivers?

No, beating UM means more to them than possibly getting their lunch eaten in a Nationally televised Bowl Game against a team they should not even be on the same field with. I found that loss to be quite satisfying, to lose so badly to the team that sent their man child idol of a coach Woody to his demise. This UM team should be so high to beat those inbread wanna bees in A2 that the poeple of A2 might want to keep everyone indoors the day before this game. Go Blue!

Basketball is a streaky game. MSU had talent. If they are able to put together a run which includes 3 good wins and over #1 Kansas, then they deserve it and will be just as hard or harder to beat than Kansas. Further, I'd rather MSU fall apart so they lose the reputation of a dangerous tournament team regardless of their season and so maybe they lose some national prestige and their recruiting suffers. that is in Michigan's interest. I try to ignore what they do, but this root for MSU because we beat them 6 weeks ago mentality has backfire written all over it.

im surrounded by those bastards. The very thought of Michigan losing makes them giddy. It's been a fun football and hoops season watching them be miserable, and I'd like it to stay that way.

Because who we "root" for has zero impact on the actual outcome of the game.  Rooting for Sparty just sucks in principle.  I want them to lose whenever possible.  Period.

It IS a complete heresy to root for those punks. Recruiting trail alone is reason enough. If you have Blue Blood, you can't EVER root for them. All that blah blah blah big 10 bullshit doesn't wash. They can eat dog turds.

Absolutely not. I look at this from a different perspective, though. Rather than rooting for the team we have a better chance of beating, I root for the team I'd handle losing to better. A loss to MSU in the tourney would be insufferable.

I think we match up fine with Kansas. Mason vs. Walton seems pretty even. Irvin vs. Graham...Wagner vs. Lucas and Wilson vs. Jackson...that looks pretty even to me. They don't have any bigs outside of Lucas. I like the matchup

Rooting against a team even when their win helps you is a total little brother attitude and should be discouraged (though there's a difference between preferring they win and actively rooting for them) That said, I don't agree that a Sparty win helps us. If they beat Kansas, then maybe they are better than Kansas right now. Certainly they'd play us with more of a grudge. If MSU wins, we see a week of Izzo hagiography. If Kansas wins, we see constant replays of The Shot - which would you rather watch? If MSU wins, and we lose to MSU.... I cringe at the thought. But if Sparty loses and we beat the team that beat them, that's great bragging material. Heck, even if we lose to Kansas we could still say we got farther in the tournament. So basically, I'd rather play Kansas, and the whole question is moot. And it's really pointless until we beat Louisville, so beat Louisville.
