UGH. Do not want Kevin Wilson at OSU.

Well, they've hired two old Paterno assistants, so baggage may not be that big of a deal.

Harbaugh owns Chip Kelly.
...I think?

He was the 49ers QB coach this season. He was also the OC at Boston College for two seasons while Don Brown was there. Surely just a coincidence.
Chip Kelly talk was silly, even as a joke, but he was Kelly's QB coach the last two seasons.

This blog has a bizarre reverence for Kevin Wilson's coaching. He did a solid job at Indiana, but his record doesn't really scream brilliant offensive mind.
FEI Offensive Rankings:
2011: 94th
2012: 51st
2013: 8th
2014: 86th
2015: 27th
2016: 81st

It is pretty good. I'm not sure it's good enough for people to be terrified of him going to OSU.

Well he recruited them. Sam Bradford was a 3 star QB so that was an evaluation thing that he got right. If someone went to Rutgers and started scoring 45 ppg I don't know how you could say that they aren't good.
January 2nd, 2017 at 11:53 PM ^
I think he's a pretty good coach but that Rutgers analogy is a huge reach. Oklahoma was very good offensively before he got there and has been very good since he left.
January 2nd, 2017 at 11:56 PM ^
Really? Indiana was by far the worst big ten program before he got there. Rich Rod went 2-0 against them.
January 3rd, 2017 at 12:03 AM ^
Are you talking about Indiana or Oklahoma? You're all over the place here.
Your comment above reads like you're claiming he built the OU offense. Incidentally, his main specialty is coaching OL, not QBs. He probably didn't have too much to do with Sam Bradford's development.
January 3rd, 2017 at 12:06 AM ^
He's been a qb coach before at various schools.
January 3rd, 2017 at 12:15 AM ^
But not at Oklahoma. Crediting him for Bradford is like crediting Drevno for Andrew Luck.
Besides, the guy's an asshole who abused his players. OSU can have him.
January 3rd, 2017 at 12:19 AM ^
He was the offensive coordinator. His job is to work with all of the offensive players.

They've had a realistic shot of beating us the past two years, so they can't be that Rugers-ish.

beat UM a couple years ago. i know. i was there.

According to Football Outsiders' Team Offense FEI Rankings, for the 4 years that he was the OC at Oklahome (not Co-OC), Oklahoma ranked:
2007 - #4
2008 - #1
2009 - #50
2010 - #16
I believe the 2009 season was when Sam Bradford was injured. He came back a few games later, but wsa hurt again.
January 3rd, 2017 at 1:04 PM ^
I'd go back farther but Fremeau started compiling the stat in 2007. See if you can figure out when Wilson arrived to turn it all around.
- 2007: 57th
- 2008: 90th
- 2009: 69th
- 2010: 37th
- 2011: 94th
- 2012: 51st
- 2013: 8th
- 2014: 86th
- 2015: 27th
- 2016: 81st
It's true that three of their four best offensive seasons in the decade were under Wilson, but so were three of their four worst. They averaged 63rd before he got there, 58th after.
January 2nd, 2017 at 11:23 PM ^
His offensive system was solid but I always thought he was an odd playcaller, getting too cute a lot of times. Case in point: after running Jordan Howard 12 plays in a row (or whatever it was), he took the ball out of his hands on 3rd and 4th downs in OT against us.

That may all be true but probably doesn't really matter - it's Meyer's program and his offense. Just like it probably doesn't really matter who Harbaugh hires to replace Fisch. For both coaches it's the DC hire that is more critical, as that isn't the head coach's area of expertise.
January 2nd, 2017 at 11:28 PM ^
Now look at his offenses at Oklahoma. And note he'll have as good if not better talent at Ohio State.

Urban Meyer calls the shots though. 3rd down in their offense next year is going to be QB draw, just like it was when Herman and Beck were there.
This is more about rehabilitating Wilson's image for a year or two before he takes another HC job.

His offenses at Oklahoma were more or less what Oklahoma has always done under Stoops. In fact, OU's worst offensive FEI ever was 50th in 2009...under Kevin Wilson.
January 3rd, 2017 at 12:04 AM ^
In 2009, Sam Bradford got injured in their 1st game.

is Wilson's offenses depend, or at least in the past, have depended on a QB who is a darn good thrower. That would be a bit of departure from wha Urban usually has. Usually Urban's QBs are really good runners and with the exception of Cardale, at best average throwers.

Did you look at Oklahoma's offenses before and after he arrived? They've been good the whole time under Stoops.
January 2nd, 2017 at 11:45 PM ^
Why? Maybe he will abuse his players so much they will be too shook to play!
January 3rd, 2017 at 8:28 AM ^
I would have liked to see Wilson come here but that won't happen.
It's tough to compete with Ohio State when you have standards.
