Sounds like OSU has fired Tim Beck

Submitted by Heywood_Jablome on

Rumor is Kevin Wilson has been hired. Texas beat writer saying Herman may have hired Beck.

He was the 49ers QB coach this season. He was also the OC at Boston College for two seasons while Don Brown was there. Surely just a coincidence.

Chip Kelly talk was silly, even as a joke, but he was Kelly's QB coach the last two seasons.

This blog has a bizarre reverence for Kevin Wilson's coaching.  He did a solid job at Indiana, but his record doesn't really scream brilliant offensive mind.

FEI Offensive Rankings:

2011:  94th

2012:  51st

2013:  8th

2014: 86th

2015: 27th

2016: 81st

According to Football Outsiders' Team Offense FEI Rankings, for the 4 years that he was the OC at Oklahome (not Co-OC), Oklahoma ranked:

2007 - #4

2008 - #1

2009 - #50

2010 - #16

I believe the 2009 season was when Sam Bradford was injured.  He came back a few games later, but wsa hurt again.

I'd go back farther but Fremeau started compiling the stat in 2007. See if you can figure out when Wilson arrived to turn it all around.

  • 2007: 57th
  • 2008: 90th
  • 2009: 69th
  • 2010: 37th
  • 2011: 94th
  • 2012: 51st
  • 2013: 8th
  • 2014: 86th
  • 2015: 27th
  • 2016: 81st

It's true that three of their four best offensive seasons in the decade were under Wilson, but so were three of their four worst. They averaged 63rd before he got there, 58th after.

His offensive system was solid but I always thought he was an odd playcaller, getting too cute a lot of times.  Case in point: after running Jordan Howard 12 plays in a row (or whatever it was), he took the ball out of his hands on 3rd and 4th downs in OT against us.

That may all be true but probably doesn't really matter - it's Meyer's program and his offense.  Just like it probably doesn't really matter who Harbaugh hires to replace Fisch.  For both coaches it's the DC hire that is more critical, as that isn't the head coach's area of expertise.

is Wilson's offenses depend, or at least in the past, have depended on a QB who is a darn good thrower.  That would be a bit of departure from wha Urban usually has.  Usually Urban's QBs are really good runners and with the exception of Cardale, at best average throwers.
