He saw the writing on the wall. He just never was good enough to see the field. Ben Bredeson beat him out of that says anything. Was he too soft? Maybe. He wouldn't start next year but it hurts depth

I wouldn't call him soft, but there's a gray area between being soft and being nasty. Say what you want about the effectiveness of Harbaugh's OL, but I think they play with intensity. I don't think Dawson ever fit that description.

That 2013 OL class is painful to go back and look at. Kugler is the only one left and still has yet to make an impact. Dawson, Kyle Bosch, Chris Fox, and Logan Tuley-Tillman are all gone now. Thanks Funk!

I don't think Funk was a Michigan-caliber offensive line coach, but I really don't fault his recruiting. Bosch and Tuley-Tillman had off-the-field issues, Fox got hurt at the end of his senior season and never really recovered (side note: that's why I'm afraid for Newsome), Kugler has had recurring shoulder problems, and Dawson is what he is. You're never going to get 100% right, but Bosch, Tuley-Tillman, and Fox probably had the highest upside, and the reasons they failed were rather unpredictable. That 2013 OL class is just really crappy luck, IMO.

Best of luck to Big Dave.

You just never can tell for certain if great play at HS level will translate to Collegiate Level.  I knew something was off after watching him in his first couple of Spring Games...slow footed and didn't get much push.  As I recall, he was ambivalent about committing to Michigan....that's often an inauspicious sign.

Hard to evaluate head and heart.

He got his degree and that is an achievement.  All the best to him.

G'day, God Bless and Go Blue!

If you know his backstory it's actually quite heartbreaking. I was hoping he would breakthrough here. Best of luck big Dave!

I'm not even sure he would have cracked the second string. Steuber and Ruiz will give us good practice depth.

Best of luck to him. Coaches must be ok with our depth to let him go. Ruiz already in the 2 deep. Will be a starter at some point next year. Ruiz, big mike, and Ben will be nasty in 2018. Evans is going like running behind that.

I may have missed or just can't remember the news about his personal life issues that some people on here are talking about. Though maybe that somehow played a role in his lack of development as a football player. You never know sometimes how a person is handling certain issues on the inside. I wish him good luck.

Agreed, being 18-22 years old can be a very confusing time for many. It wouldn't surprise me if he was dealing with some personal issues.

I was hoping he'd move to DT, practice all spring and summer and fall at the position and give us some snaps on defense with Dwumfour as a backup behind Mone and Hurst.

It is weird how many people are pointing out that he wasn't going to play.

Some people almost seem happy about this? (I'm not saying you should be sad about it, lol). Just weird is all.

I don't understand why the first reaction is always to share what little impact the departing player has on the future - and once that's been discussed, why the dead horse is beat. It's like we're trying to make ourselves feel better but we all know that's not the case because he truly wasn't going to have much of an impact next year. Again, weird.

Best of luck to him. It's unfortunate it never really came to fruition for him on the field but I hope he enjoyed his 4 yrs at UM and feels his degree is valuable. I hope he finds a year of playing time somewhere and makes the most of it.
