Tom Allen Now HC at IU

Submitted by jimmyshi03 on

Announced at press conference after Kevin wilson's "resignation." No search. Allen was IU's DC who improved that unit so much after coming in from USF. He is an Indiana native.

AD is saying there were "philosophical differences," but they had brought in an outside investigator to look at program.

From Brian Bennett:

"Kevin WIlson had about $11 million left on his deal. Settled for $542,000 to go away. "

So I'm guessing this pretty much was the scenario that went down:

AD: Here's 542k of the 11 mil we own you. Take it or we make sure you never coach again.

Wilson: Ok.

And then the coach threatens to sue for wrongful termination, and you eventually settle.

This settled fast. And for next to nothing. Although now that I think about it, it's still twice as much as Beckman got. Wlison's buyout was probably bigger too, though. I can't remember what Beckman's was supposed to be.

Eh.

Seems solid, but the dude has coached in Division I for like 5 years, and two of them as a DC at USF and Indiana.

Main question will be what he does with the offensive system Wilson installed

OK yeah.  There was some F'd up shit happening behind closed doors for him to accept $542k with $11M left on his deal.  Almost sounds like "you either take this deal or we call the authorities on your ass".

For those saying Wilson must have committed some horrific atrocities to have accepted such a low figure, there is at least another possiblity, and that is the stigma attached to an employee who sues his employer, not to mention the time, expenses, and potential for further sullying his reputation that a suit would involve.

Had Mike Leach not sued Texas Tech, I'm convinced he would have been able to land a much better job than Washington State and almost certainly wouldn't have been beaten out for jobs by coaches like Randy Edsall.

Few coaches accept a buyout at 5% of their remaining contract, and they don't have to risk the stigma of a lawsuit to negotiate better. What's your explanation for the university hiring outside counsel to investigate the football program, then accepting the hurried "resignation" of one of the most successful coaches they've ever had, who in turn accepts a minuscule buyout in exchange for non-disclosure and the opportunity to resign and not be fired for cause?

As for Leach, he doesn't seem to have ever been seriously considered by anyone else throughout his tenure at Tech and was reduced to ambushing athletic directors in hotel lobbies to get "interviews" long before the James incident. I don't doubt that there's a stigma attached to suing an employer, but in Leach's case it simply confirmed a reputation he already suffered from.

We won't have to deal with their prolific offense.

Being a defensive coach, Allen will probably go to a more traditional

offense,to put his defense in better position and keep them off the field more.

Offensive efficiency ranking at Fremeau since Wilson took over:

  • 2011: 69
  • 2012: 24
  • 2013: 17
  • 2014: 82
  • 2015: 45
  • 2016: 79

Maybe the novelty has worn off? Those last three years are pretty much where they were under Lynch.
