Report that NFL will try, and fail, to get Harbaugh soon

Submitted by crg on

Per Freeman at B/R:

"I keep hearing several teams are going to make the Michigan coach mega-offers. He won't take them. Harbaugh isn't going anywhere anytime soon. I don't care if he's offered a trillion dollars, a starship and a Cuban cigar. Harbaugh. Is. Not. Leaving.

That won't stop teams from trying."

Good to see that at least some NFL reporters are seeing what is obvious to us.

It's Mike Freeman. Say what you will about the education/resume issue, but Freeman is a fine source.

The days of Bleacher Report being open content streaming out piles of garbage have been gone for a while. Yes, there are still bad pieces on it, yes there still is issues with it tweaking clicks and SEO, but the "B/R = bad" mentality is not always applicable anymore - You need to look at who actually wrote the article. They have quite a few legitimate reporters.

There's no monetary offer that an NFL team could conjure up that UM wouldn't be able to match. With profit sharing the NFL doesn't see the huge $ delta that a college team does. We could pay him 20M and still end up ahead in the end, in not sure the same could be said for the NFL.

Yes, an NFL team easily could pay that much and still be up. The difference between teams is bigger than you might expect given revenue sharing because there's a lot of factors. The Forbes list for operating income (the closest you're likely to get to numbers showing total profit) shows a pretty big disparity from the Cowboys (#1, $300M) comapred to $26M for the #32 BIlls:

The teams, especially those at the top, still do have a good amount of money they could spend on a great coach.

(For the record I didn't neg you)

I clicked on the link, and the OP seems to have cut-and-pasted the entirety of the relevant content.  So that's good.

Howevah, it's not news that NFL teams will make runs at Harbaugh to see if he's interested.  He's a Super Bowl coach with a great record in SFO.  He's got the requisite monomania to be an NFL coach.  That's not changing, so a "reporter" could run this story any day of the week throughout the next ten years.

In the meantime, Quarterback Jack and the Harbaugh in the oven will be attending and matriculating from St. Thomas Aquinas.

The Colts... He'd be given absolute power, be reunited with Luck, and despite being a train-wreck of a defense, they have a decent cap situation.

I expect him to think about this scenarios for upwards of 5 or 6 milliseconds.

he's one of the best coaches in any level of football. But, Jim and his family are happy in AA and I really think this could be his last coaching stop!

No offense to the OP, but can we stop posting these kinds of stories? If Harbaugh were to ever make the jump back, then we can post stories. But he's here now and he's happy, so let's just keep the focus on that.

What is with the content police on this site!?! Honestly I don't get why anyone suggests to anyone else what not to post? You know it takes way longer to reply to them not to post something than it does to... oh you know... just move on to something else.

I mean the real estate is free. You didn't get charged for it. Electrons don't die if you don't click on something. What is the deal?

Yes. I'm aware of the irony.

What whores. It's not enough they make use of a free minor league, they have to take our coaches too? This is why i will never understand how someone can follow both college and pro sports

This makes no sense. I don't want Harbaugh to leave (and don't think he will) but why would this make the NFL "whores" or why would it make watching both sports impossible to understand?

Certainly you can debate whether players should receive something above and beyond what they do today, but calling it a "free minor league" is silly and ignorant of not only the economics of college football but also of the interplay between the NCAA and the NFL.

Although those who have predicted it have been regularly denounced as trolls. Big money NFL offers were bound to come. Obviously, Harbaugh is not going to bail after two years, and probably not after three, but after that, all bets are off. The posters who think they know how Harbaugh is going to feel about his job situation here in 2, 3, 4 years really don't, no matter how much they try to reassure themselves. Not even Harbaugh knows that. Obviously an NFL team could outspend us, but it will ultimately not be about the money with Harbaugh. It will be about ambition, and his desire to have a Super Bowl win to his name. It remains to be seen if that desire will be stronger than his desire to stay here for another 10-15 years.

I don't know how anyone can blame the NFL for going after Harbaugh. He's one of the elite coaches. From his perspective, the NFL remains football at its highest level and the Super Bowl is the goal he never achieved. But the 49ers taught him the painful lesson that, if he ever returns, he needs to have control of the entire process. But I don't see that happening any time soon. He is beloved at Michigan, which definitely wasn't the case with the 49ers. In the NFL, the system is designed to bring successful teams back to the pack. At Michigan, he can assure himself a constant supply of talented players by working hard at recruiting and succeeding on the field. He also has the new goal of a national championship to chase. And he is in a great place to raise his kids. I don't think there's anything to worry about. I am wondering, however, what the fan reaction is going to be if the OSU game doesn't go well.

Never going to happen, never going to happen, oops.  Don't confuse your desires for coach and his.  I have rescently realized things don't always go the logical way and sometimes things are just hard to figure out.  Confusing my opinion and the prevailing wisdom of the out come can be completely wrong.

Spot on. We hope it doesn't happen. We don't think there's any evidence to suggest it will happen. And he has plenty of reason to be very happy at Michigan. But the risk it might someday happen is something Michigan accepted when it hired a top talent. We should accept that risk as well.

however, I also accept, with a bit of pride, his remarks prior to leaving S.F. "I find your questioning disrespectful. I am under contract." Of course as soon as the contract expired and the calls started flooding in, perhaps topped by the one from one Tom Brady - we were pulling out all stops - he agreed to come home. But as long as he remains under contract with us, I feel good about keeping him. That's just the way he's made. Additionally, I think he's the type of person where there would actually be a cut-off as to how much money is needed to finance about 6 to 10 generations, without taking their earning capacity into account. We'll do him right.

We are just going to have to acccept that this is going to occur for every NFL opening for the rest of eternity....

Good coaches are good coaches but some are more suited for the NFL and some more suited for college.  To me, Harbaugh can ALWAYS opt for the NFL ...there will ALWAYS be openings every year.  All he'd have to do is have his agent raise the issue and NFL franchises would fall over themselves to get him....

Why?

Because the SF 49ers are the dumbest collection of dickbags in an NFL front office and every other NFL team knows it - they made a HUGE mistake in letting Harbaugh go.

Saying that, these teams already made a run at coach and he came home instead.  MICHIGAN is a better job and the timing was almost destined to be.

So, in my opinion, the only way Harbaugh goes back to the NFL is if he chooses to and not whether "NFL teams will continue to pursue him."

After all, it's not up to those NFL teams - it's not their decision.

Are fewer this year so far for the NFL. Some have attributed this phenomenon to players politicizing the game. Regardless, there is no more visible coach in college football today than one James Joseph Harbaugh. His prominence alone is reason to try and lure him back to the NFL. Fans and detractors alike want to see Jim return. As others have observed here, the NFL has zero chance to bring Jim back for quite some time. Nobody's got it better than us. Nobody.

He's got a lot of talent but I think he needs at least two more years to work on the skills he'll need for the NFL and not be so reliant on his recuiting prowess.  He'll also have to hone his skills in managing players who make a lot more money than college students.  He should stay in school and earn a Masters or PhD, since he may not make it in the pros.
