OT: A long night ahead

Submitted by UMFanInFlorida on

For those who are willing, it's going to be a long night and day ahead for us in eastern and central Florida. We'd appreciate your thoughts and prayers as hurricane Matthew is bearing down on the area.

Looking forward to cheering on Harbaugh and co. once we get through this mess.

Thanks and go blue!

ed: thanks for the well wishes already. My family and I are in Orlando. So yes any further east and we'd have gotten the heck outta town.

6:30 AM update:

So far so good in southeast Orlando. There's some blowing and gusting, but overall it's been tamer than expected.
We've had power all night, so coffee's on. I got about four hours of sleep, and wife and son are still sleeping soundly.
We aren't out of the woods yet, but thanks for the prayers and positive thoughts.

8:30 AM Update:

Still raining and blowing here, but no visible damage other than a few small limbs down. Nothing worse than a summer thunderstorm as far as that goes. The Atlantic coast has taken it pretty hard and there are lots w/o power. Daytona Beach is getting hammered by wind and rain all morning. Praying for similar positive reports from other MGoFloridians.

The waiting for this storm is seriously driving me nuts. It's windy here, but very little rain compared to the past.
I'm trying to sleep on a cot in an office, because I'm a nurse, and a director of patient safety, and we're not leaving our staff in this shit. My wife is also a nurse, is currently in our shuttered house with the kids, and she'll be here tomorrow night. It's easy to say that people should leave, but some of us have to care for those who can't. It's what we do and we're happy to do it.
Yes, being prepared is essential, but not always that simple. I've had supplies on hand for weeks, but after 11 straight years of near misses, some do let their guard down. This part of the state was a nut house for the past few days, and getting supplies was tough, especially for all those who've never been here through a hurricane. We'll make it through.
To the OP and other Florida Wolverines: stay safe, take care, and God bless.

will remain on the west side of the eye wall. Eventually friction will weaken this Hurricane as it moves along the coast line of northeast FL/GA and SC.  I think the storm surge may be worse in southeast SC, and of course a lot of heavy rainfall. Stay indoors and remain calm. Don't do any midnight swims.

Checking in from Viera (just SW of Cape Canaveral) right now. Eye of the storm is almost directly east of us, about 20-30 miles away. It's a bit breezy out there but we still have power and comms. Being from Michigan this is an entirely new experience for me. I think I'll pass on the next one.

insightful guy, like a number of millenials I know. Would you mind sending me your approved list of safe places to live? Having read all of your comments in this thread I now realize my mistake in moving to Jacksonville 33 years ago. I could really use your help.

Channel 7 here in the Detroit area was showing some of the footage so far - still looks pretty scary down there from up here, so stay safe, MGoFloridians.

They were talking about a pretty significant storm surge being possible arond West Palm Beach as well as the winds gusting over 100 MPH potentially, among other things.

my uncle in Lantana (near Boca Raton) is hunkered down in the bathroom with his sick wife and their dog. was texting him last might as it hit. they had power for a while but I haven't heard back from him yet this morning. he was hoping his roof would hold.

We are all good here in Okeechobee. The winds weren't as bad as expected, so we never went on the generator or lost power. Our switchboard is down in, but we still have portable and analog phones, so we're good. Thank God it stayed far enough off the coast here, but I do still worry about those on the Space Coast and points north. I hope all of the MGoFloridians are safe and sound. Thank you all for the prayers and good vibes.

Glad most are safe and it wasn't as bad as the horrendous media coverage made it out to be.....again. They are still pretty certain you are all going to die.

Perhaps wait until the worst part happens (the storm surge when it gets to the Georgia Bight) before making that assessment. The worst part of any hurricane, that causes the most damage and death, is storm surge. That's still to come, despite (yes) the media coverage being generally terrible.

While I know that one news person made an ass of himself, and it may have seemed overblown, this storm killed hundreds of people. I also remember Hurricane Wilma, where people fled Tampa, only to have the storm turn down and smack Miami. I'm thankful that we were prepared, even if it wasn't as bad as they thought.

Someday we'll have the technology to direct hurricanes so that they make landfall in wastelands with no civilization.... like Columbus.  I'll settle for Hurricane Harbaugh for now.

Thanks for the update. My family owns a house in Davenport and I've been wondering about the conditions down there. Haven't heard from the property manager yet so this has been quite helpful. I hope everyone in the storms path gets through this with minimal impact
