Crisis averted? Hurricane Matthew to stay south...maybe
Good news. Latest forecast cone from NOAA has Hurricane Matthew slowing down and taking a turn east at the Carolinas. If it follows this path, it shouldn't pose a problem for Saturday's 7 p.m. kick in Piscataway. Fingers crossed.
Congratulations, Rutgers, you get to keep your night game.

Three words I never want to hear again: Lake. Effect. Snow.
Here in NC, stuff that was scheduled later in the week is getting canceled.

I live on the east side. That lake effect snow is nuts.

we don't pitch that angle to businesses and people. We have basically no natural disasters here save for the rare tornado and there's plenty of water. We should be marketing the shit out of that to companies down south and out west.
Come to Michigan, where your factory / warehouse won't be destroyed by a hurricane. Again.
Or, move to Michigan, at least we have water!

nobody has it better than us (michigan). water will be the draw card to trump all other issues, and we have oil and gas all over the state to the extent we still are using those for power in the decades to come.

Sure, that applies to anywhere west of the Mississppi, but doesn't apply at all to the southeast.

businesses go where they can make the most money. Generally you can find good employees anywhere you go or employees will move to you if the job is good enough

The cost of labor is generally cheaper where there is abundant supply.
October 5th, 2016 at 9:42 AM ^
Depends on where you live, no? I'm guessing the residents in Flint wouldn't say they have plenty of water.

Techinically there was a cyclone that formed in Lake Huron in 1996 after a hurricane came up through the US and rebuilt strength in the great lakes.

Obviously it's a rarity, but it was called the huroncane.

Just hoping we still have power to be able to watch the game on Saturday, I might go crazy if I am forced to have 2 bye weeks in a row!

I live in Jacksonville and we're currently expecting 70-90 mph winds at the beach. It doesn't sound good. I'm definitely hoping we have power for the game.....and that no trees fall on my house.

We just moved to Jax from Michigan on Labor Day Weekend, when the first Tropical Storm hit. Four weeks later and we're doing this all over again! I'm anticipating more wind and rain this time around.

FYI....there's a Michigan fan club that meets at Whiskey Jax on Baymeadows (not the new one near the beach.....the Buckeyes go there). I think that it's called Wolverine Jax (or something like that) on Facebook. I went for the Hawaii game and it was pretty fun.
I typically prefer to watch the games at home.....but it's fun to watch with a crowd sometimes.
October 5th, 2016 at 9:04 AM ^
Awesome! Thanks for the heads up. I will check it out for one of these games. I prefer to watch at home as well but a change of pace isn't bad.

This is why you need a generator. Either that or evacuate to a hotel that has a generator.
My sister is a teacher in Boca and she said school is closed Thursday and Friday.
October 5th, 2016 at 9:26 AM ^
Maybe stores are out-of-stockin FL already, but you have to own a generator (even a $450 version with 3K watt or $700 for 5.5K watts) to run the TV and fridge for rare storms ... or more importantly regular tailgating!
October 5th, 2016 at 12:38 PM ^
Ditto in Boca. My buddy is off the grid on 100% solar. Wanna watch the game there?

I'm from Ohio so we don't get that amount of rain ever. Maybe it's pure ignorance on my behalf but I'm just not concerned about being at a game with just rain. But as of now, it just looks like everyones predicting the apocalypse...Nothing an RV awning can't handle!
October 5th, 2016 at 10:11 AM ^
Haha. I will tell you, for certain and from personal experience, that you don't want an RV awning out with winds like that.
October 5th, 2016 at 10:24 AM ^
Not sure if you've checked the forecast or not, but it's saying 5-10 MPH winds Saturday with showers possible. Pretty sure an awning can withstand that and then some. But I'm not meteorolgist, things change I suppose. The 100 MPH winds are down town in Florida and the Carolinas, not in the northeast.
October 5th, 2016 at 10:41 AM ^
I was talking about where tropical storm (let alone hurricane) force winds actually hit. Sorry, in reading what you wrote (i.e. "everyone is predicting the apocolypse") my mind went to where they actually are, because it could be, here in Florida, not where the concern is the impact on a football game...
October 5th, 2016 at 9:07 AM ^
that sounds awful. I'll stay in Michigan.
October 5th, 2016 at 9:50 AM ^
Available at the National Hurricane Center, are predicting about 2-3 feet or less of surge for coastal Florida. You'll no doubt get a good downpour for a while and the wind is going to be howling; but the good news is that it doesn't appear that you'll be inundated with coastal flooding. Damage should be fairly minor given the size and power of this storm.
October 5th, 2016 at 10:10 AM ^
Coastal flooding is really only ever an issue if you live, basically, on the coast (like right on the water), unless it's a true direct hit in an unfortunate area in terms of topography (think: Katrina and southern Louisiana, Tampa Bay itself, etc). These storms are almost always rain and wind events for most people. Heck, I live less than a mile from the Gulf and never worry at all about coastal flooding due to our elevation, but absolutely worry about wind and rain induced local flooding.
