Crisis averted? Hurricane Matthew to stay south...maybe

Submitted by Phil Brickma on

Good news. Latest forecast cone from NOAA has Hurricane Matthew slowing down and taking a turn east at the Carolinas. If it follows this path, it shouldn't pose a problem for Saturday's 7 p.m. kick in Piscataway. Fingers crossed.

Congratulations, Rutgers, you get to keep your night game.

we don't pitch that angle to businesses and people.  We have basically no natural disasters here save for the rare tornado and there's plenty of water.  We should be marketing the shit out of that to companies down south and out west.

Come to Michigan, where your factory / warehouse won't be destroyed by a hurricane.  Again.

Or, move to Michigan, at least we have water!

FYI....there's a Michigan fan club that meets at Whiskey Jax on Baymeadows (not the new one near the beach.....the Buckeyes go there).  I think that it's called Wolverine Jax (or something like that) on Facebook.  I went for the Hawaii game and it was pretty fun.

I typically prefer to watch the games at home.....but it's fun to watch with a crowd sometimes.

Last year's UMD game and that was moved from an 8 pm to a noon start as well. Happy that I won't have to redo all my travel plans for this weekend's dismantling of the scarlet Knights.

Word has it that hurricane Jabril is still forecast to make landfall around 7pm on Saturday, however. A project category 5 storm, vast destruction is inevitable.

Why is everyone worried about a little rain? Were you guys not at the Colorado or UCF games....

I'm from Ohio so we don't get that amount of rain ever. Maybe it's pure ignorance on my behalf but I'm just not concerned about being at a game with just rain. But as of now, it just looks like everyones predicting the apocalypse...Nothing an RV awning can't handle!

Not sure if you've checked the forecast or not, but it's saying 5-10 MPH winds Saturday with showers possible. Pretty sure an awning can withstand that and then some. But I'm not meteorolgist, things change I suppose. The 100 MPH winds are down town in Florida and the Carolinas, not in the northeast.

I was talking about where tropical storm (let alone hurricane) force winds actually hit.  Sorry, in reading what you wrote (i.e. "everyone is predicting the apocolypse") my mind went to where they actually are, because it could be, here in Florida, not where the concern is the impact on a football game...

Available at the National Hurricane Center, are predicting about 2-3 feet or less of surge for coastal Florida. You'll no doubt get a good downpour for a while and the wind is going to be howling; but the good news is that it doesn't appear that you'll be inundated with coastal flooding. Damage should be fairly minor given the size and power of this storm.

Coastal flooding is really only ever an issue if you live, basically, on the coast (like right on the water), unless it's a true direct hit in an unfortunate area in terms of topography (think: Katrina and southern Louisiana, Tampa Bay itself, etc).  These storms are almost always rain and wind events for most people.  Heck, I live less than a mile from the Gulf and never worry at all about coastal flooding due to our elevation, but absolutely worry about wind and rain induced local flooding.
