Not a good look. Fine if you want to fire him, embarrassing to sack him mid-season after he has won you a NC and has had so many winning seasons for you. Hope LSU can't attract an elite guy because of the way they treated Miles here. No shame in firing a guy, but geez

It was probably time for Les to move on.  He is a good coach and will end up leading another program next year.

He's getting up there...

He certainly can, but will he want to build another program?

It's going to have to be a ready made situation. Doesn't really have time to spend 3-4 years trying to get Missouri or a similar team to elite status.

And with the success of guys like Hermann...a lot of ADs would prefer that route then taking an older coach like Miles.

I mean if Strong is fired would Texas go after Miles or give Herman more money than he can count? I think they'd prefer Hermann.

Oddly enough, I wish this WOULD'VE happened last year and he was hired at Baylor to calm things down post-Briles. They have their offense and Kendal Briles is still the OC. Phil Bennett is a capable DC. That would've been a great fit, IMO. A team program that is established and a team he can win right away until HE wanted to retire.

Texas would surely prefer Herman.  Les seems to be on a downward trajectory, as LSU has not been playing up to the level of athlete they have been able to attract.  But if Herman's not available, would they go with Les?  I don't know.  I still kind of think they will look for a younger guy, but who knows.

Cam Cameron maybe needed to go, but stunned to see Les get the midseason ax.  Expected he'd be fired at the end of the season, obviously, but  absent misconduct, that's a rough way to treat someone who has won there as much as he has.

Whoa. Team only has 2 losses. Could still rescue the season. But then again, when things are this bad, they usually don't get better. I'm stunned it's this soon. I think waiting for another loss would've been wiser. But whatever. Crazy that coaches are getting axed and it's not October yet.

I never understood this thinking. Schembechler went from MAC to MICHIGAN.

Urban has undeniable success at BGSU, would anyone (admittedly in hindsight) not have taken him?

How many people thought they didn't want Harbaugh after "only" taking "it's just" USD from 1-11 to 11-1? (raises own hand).

If he's got the good, he's got the goods. And Fleck's got the goods.

If I am Herman, I wait until the end of the year and have several programs bid over me...don't understand why they fire him now. Nothing is going to happen until the end because of this fact

Think about what you're saying before you catch feelings and get all butt hurt about it.

It's unrealistic and Miles wouldn't be able to recruit unless he was an assistant coach or the recruiting coordinator.

Having him as an analyst doesn't really help us when it comes to recruiting...we'd be better off with him not having any ties to the program and push kids to look at Michigan if that's what you're trying to accomplish.

So who are you firing midseason to hire Les Miles so he can recruit? Please do tell.

Mr. Yost

Partridge was the recruiting coordinator...thus making him available to talk to recruits. He can't leave campus...but he could talk to them, host them on campus, etc.

When Durkin left, they quickly used that spot to get Partridge on the road.

Soup Campbell is an analyst. Chris Partidge was a recruiting coordinator.

Two totally different positions.

If you think Les Miles is coming to Michigan to sit behind a desk and keep our recruiting board, keep our contacts, send out mailers, tweet and use social media to stay in touch with recruits...basically work 23 hours out of the day on recruiting. You've lost your mind.

I don't have that power. I believe some of us on this board are simply stating that it would be a great add in terms of recruiting. Not talking about you, but some people here are so quick to insult others if they don't agree on something. And we wonder why some people can't stand Michigan fans.

What don't you understand about that?

You either have to fire someone or you bring him on in a capacity that it's LITERALLY A RECRUITING VIOLATION IF HE RECRUITS! Which would be an analyst position.

LOOK.

Before Saban was an OC at Bama...he was an analyst for Bama. He helped with their offense...so much that Saban basically fired Nuss and hired Kiffin.

Kiffin did not recruit. He didn't talk to recruits. He didn't do anything with recruits.

Then you have Chris Partridge...he was the recruiting coordinator. That was his job. He was very much so allowed to talk to recruits...couldn't leave campus for an in-home, but he could talk to them, he was brillant with social media, he was a great host during on-campus visits, etc.

Are you going to fire that person now and expect Les Miles to put in all that work? It's a full time job. And technically, you can't coach in it. It's an administrative position.

...you're getting upset cause I say no. It's not cause I hate Miles. It's because it's so unrealistic.

Like I said...why not go hire Frank Beamer? Steve Spurrier? Let's go get Mack Brown and use his ties in Texas.

We're Michigan, we could pay all of those guys the money just to be associated with the program. The problem is...they can't recruit, so it wouldn't help us. If they're an analyst, they're breaking down film and helping our coaches. Something we could just ask them to do if Harbaugh really wanted their input.

So your options are...

A. Hire Miles as an analyst and he can't recruit at all and it's a violation if he has contact

B. Fire an assistant coach and hire Les as an assistant coach...who you firing, midseason, with an undefeated team this year?

C. Fire your recruiting coordinator and hire Les there...a position for aspiring coaches where you work like an intern, and breathe/eat/shit recruiting all day every day...social media, the clerical work in getting kids on campus, hosting them (not just showing up for part of the visit like most head coaches do), etc.

Again, you'd be much better off if Miles was just a high school coach who sent kids to Michigan or if he was just an alum who used his connections with coaches in that region to build relationships with Michigan as someone acting 100% on his own and in no official capacity of the University.

There, I gave you two solutions...still haven't heard one from you.

http://www.mgoblue.com/sports/m-footbl/spec-rel/coaches-m-footbl.html

Let's break it down.

Coaches - coach...you know that, no need to continue

Analysts - are basically coaches who can't do much on the field. But they're around the program every day, they're breaking down film to help the coaches, and they're coaching as much as they can within the rules the NCAA allows. They don't recruit! But maybe if you have a guy like Bush Sr. on the staff...he can tip you off to guys you should recruit and recruits can run into him on visits since he's an employee of the University like anyone else.

Football Operations - This is your administrative staff...Miles doesn't fit here.

Player Personnel - Ahhh here is where Patridge came from. Here you have Mr. Tony Tuioti who's helping us huge out west, you've got Mama Gwen Bush...coordinates those visits, makes sure everything is perfect for us. Then you have 3 guys who do all the dirty work...they're answering calls, updating recruiting boards, keeping track of all the news and updates, they're helping with visits, etc. Lastly, you have Mr. Bills, the master with the graphic design and the edits on social media. Most of these people work crazy hours because they're trying to be coaches one day or move up in their careers. 60-something Les Miles doesn't really fit here. But some, if not all of these guys CAN have contact with recruits.

So what's the solution?

Why do people think Miles would help UM recruit in the South?

Has anyone taken a look at LSU's roster?  75% of the players are from Louisiana.  I'm guessing it's not that hard to get a recruit from Louisiana to come to LSU.  It's not like Miles is going all over the south and pulling the top recruits away from the flagship schools in other states.
