Tonight! Always fun following the teams around here.

Who's your team, how are they looking for 2016?

Gladiators, home of Joe Carriage. Always a playoff team. Unfortunately, they have to open up 5 hours away in Marquette. The only team with the ND fight song that I cheer for.

Livonia Franklin Patriots.  Trying to follow-up on their Cinderella run in the playoffs last year where they lost the eventual state champs, King, in the semi-finals.

Michigan WR Kekoa Crawford's Rancho Santa Margarita Eagles at Mission Viejo High School Diablos

RSM's center is Brett Neilon, a Michigan target for 2017, I believe

Santa Margarita has a student section – “The Eagles Nest” – that is one of the most passionate in the county. Santa Margarita’s students will probably fill up a good portion of the visitor’s half of the stadium Friday when the Eagles play at Mission Viejo.

That’s an unusually high-quality matchup for opening week. Coaches sometimes prefer a less-challenging first game, given that these are high school kids and coaches are never certain what they’re going to get.

On one side of the field at Mission Viejo will be Bob Johnson, who has coached county football since the 1970s and has 315 career wins. He coached the Diablos to CIF-Southern Section and state championships last year as the team finished 16-0. On the other side of the field will be Rich Fisher, making his Santa Margarita coaching debut after many years as a college football assistant coach.

Mission Viejo is No. 2 in the Register’s Orange County preseason rankings. Santa Margarita is No. 4. (Those rankings will be part of a 16-page high school football preview section, “Kickoff 2016,” that will be included in the Register on Thursday.)

Mission Viejo is one of four O.C. teams that won CIF-SS football titles in 2015. Canyon, La Habra and Saddleback Valley Christian are the others.

This is gonna be crazy. I used to live in Santa Monica but had loads of clients in the OC area, and they were die hard high school football fans. I guess I didn't really expect that in SoCal, but it was pretty damn cool. Here in NorCal, it's a bit less intense around the Bay Area, but there are some ridiculous teams like De La Salle, which still reign supreme.

Always root for my alma mater the Our Lady of the Lakes Lakers as a perennial Div. 8 power.

And root for my boys, the DeLa Salle Pilots where I work!

I'm excited. My girls, age 2 and 4, and I will be taking in a game tonight. Well, maybe one quarter. If I get them cotton candy.

Anyone going to the Pioneer/Muskegon game on Saturday night at the Big House? Sadly I can't make it because it's my Dad's retirement dinner (THANKS DAD, just kidding).

Saline plays at Rockford.

Huron play Detroit Southeastern at home.

As a fairly recent Pontiac Notre Dame Prep grad and former player, I'll be doing my best to keep up to date with the current team. The suspension from the Catholic League should be interesting as many of the scheduled teams aren't the usual opponents from my time there. The offense should be pretty good this year with an OT committed to WMU, a RB getting Ivy League looks, and a young QB who excelled at the Harbaugh QB Camp.

Prep looked good tonight, though against a far lesser opponent in Thurston.

Offense is very good. Uses tempo effectively. Defense is solid, although struggles to stop the run at times.

On a side not I personally find it crazy that Pat Fox complained so much about his Catholic league opponents... They have a solid team that could and would be able to compete. They wouldn't be near the top but they could in fact compete.

Loyola made the same argument 3ish years ago and has far less students. Part of the deal when you are parochial school in a parochial league.

Go Dux!! Winningest program in Michigan (%) among schools w/at least 10yrs playing.

4 state championships (D3 1x D4 3x)

Highest scoring offense in M 8 out of the last 10yrs

Power T football played like its a religion!!

Chapter 1. They Give you 4 Downs...USE THEM!!

-as soon as thou shalt cross thine own 35 yd line. All punting is cancelled. Thou shalt gain at least 3yds on every play so therefore 4 x 3 = 12. First down!!

-punting is for communist's

-If your defense CAN stop a team then it doth not matter where said team gets the ball. You stop them!!

-If thoust defense CANNOT stop said team, Keep thine offense ON THE FIELD as much as possible. Therefore surrendering thine ball is counterproductive.

Chapter 2. All kicking is for weaklings and communists.

-Field goals are half measures designed to tempt those weak in spirit  among us. See chapter 1. on use of downs for detail.

-Extra points are also half measures. Thou shalt attempt to score maximum points allowable AT ALL TIMES!!

-We only need to convert 3 out of 5 attempts and we are ahead of the house

Chapter 3. Kick offs are an opportunity to get the BALL for OUR TEAM therefore, in the course of any given season at least 1/3 of them should be onsides attempts.

You might think I'm kidding but this is how they roll. And boy to they ROLL! The stats are almost sick on this team. Leading the state almost every year in scoring, rushing, yds gained etc. along with least penalized, least turn overs and a whole load of other more obscure stats.

The coach is a mad genius and I've never seen better at the HS level.

vs Mona Shores in a bit.  My last kid's last year of a varsity sport (snif).  Afer this season I will have nothing help divert me from my Wolverine obsession.
