Bo M vs Block M: which hat do you prefer/wear?

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

The Block M has always been my style, but I bought myself a Bo M hat at MDen and I really like it. Now I'm torn on which style I will wear for games.

I've always been curious to see where others stand on this.

I do notice that once the Bo M hat disappeared from the sidelines in 2004, we started going on a slide after that season.

I'd pay a king's ransom for an unstructured, fitted Bo-style hat. I can find structured Bo hats and unstructured regular hats. Drives me insane!

I hear you.  I decided to give up and just live with the structured hat.

I don't like it as much as my unstructured ones but there just simply isn't one and I wanted the Bo/Skinny M.  The first M hat I ever had was the same way, so at least it is nostalgic.

Word. Give me a 47 brand/Twins fitted hat with the skinny M and I will buy one every 6-12 months until I die. That is about how long it takes me to fade/grime-out a hat.

47 brand FTW...but their block M is rather large & obnoxious.

Tip for breaking in (breaking) a structured hat:
But it a size big.
HOT water. Shower with it, or soak it in hot water. Option two is better since the bill is cardboard, and you want that to stay relatively dry.
Wear it wet. Put a beanie on top of it, to help it form to your head. Keep it on till it dries. This softens the plastic threads that run through the front of the crown, and as the hat dries (hair dryer helps if you don't want to spend hours wearing a wet hat) it shrinks and molds to your head, giving it a close to unstructured look/fit.
Or, if you are a little cocky, cut the front mesh out. Needle nose players help to get the plastic strands out. Takes a while, but works. If try it on an old hat first to practice.
I've used both of these methods on many hats. Sometimes both.

The block M...just not THAT block M that looks like WVU got all tangled up with Michigan. That's like a Rich Rod block M.

I also don't like the super puffy block M like Drevno had on his hat in a recent interview. Just the clean fucking logo like my avatar.

That said, the Bo M is classic and it's much better than that Rich Rod option you have in the OP.

...I think the skinny M looks better, but only on hats.  I personally think the stitching is bad for both looks but it's a little easier to handle in the skinny 'M'.

Bo M for sure. The full block M never looks right on a hat. Needs to be perfectly flat in my opinion. Think Block M + depth of the embroidery on the bigger M doesn't look good to me. Smaller, sleeker M looks better. Plus, Bo.

We get an opponent watch, presser transcript, and a Neck Sharpies all in the same day, and you go with another apparel thread because you can't figure out whether you like your dad's or your grandpa's necktie better?  WTF man?  Go back to Jersey.

But damn, I am disappointed in my recent purchase. Got the Nike visor and its bulky canvas. Bleck...and the season t fits so weird. Took 2.5 weeks to get from M Den, and it's going back... But I digress...I'm not a fan of the skinny M for myself. I like it on guys, but not for me. It might be because the items it's on are limited to large "man hats."

Basically, yeah. Pretty much before the late 90s. This weird M crap didn't start until Nike. I probably have like 8 Nike hats with 8 different Ms on them.

I bought a skinny-M hat at Moe's the day before Band Week my freshman year. Skinny M. Adjustable. Low crown. It was perfect. Lasted a football season before it was faded out and unwearable. Could never find another one like it...

The hat that does it for me and still the only hat I own to this day. Maybe a new friend can join it early next year... well see.
