Wings Bolts Game 2

TV: CNBC

No major Lineup changes for the Wings or Bolts are expected. Howard will be starting in goal again. No matter who the goalie the team defense needs to be stronger infront of him. Red Wings haven't come back from being down 0-2 since 2002 Vs. Vancouver they also won the cup that year.

Let's Go Red Wings!

Couple thoughts: these refs are overly excited about Richards relative to his impact on the game (other than the goal); and the lightning are bigger, faster and better than the wings. Not saying they can't win or anything, just that it'll take some luck

Y home to be the GM. Don't you think 19 years for Holland is enough? New stadium, c'mon now, lets let Steve Yzerman set up the next dynasty. Anyone that can get the TB Bolts to the Cup finals, think what he could do with Mike Illitch's open checkbook.

At least lets do it while Mike Illitch is still around instead of his kids who may not be as keen to spend the money onthe wings.

But for how many guys in this roster (including coaching staff) is this their first NHL playoff series? Certainly has to be a part of the equation

It's hard for the young guys (Larkin, Anth, Mantha, etc) to do anything if they aren't playing much or at all. Look at when the wings were successful this year, at the beginning. The ice time for the veterans was way down, with the younger guys playing a much bigger role. Well, that and we had some great goaltending.

My coworker and I are watching the game. We've both been Wings fans our whole hockey loves. I'm talking 20+ years each. After that fifth goal, we were outside smoking and both finally came to the same conclusion... This team is not good. As a whole. As a D. As an offense. As a goalie core. As a coaching staff. The product is bad. The overall product is bad. The only way forward is to not get all upset at the notion, but to accept it. You. Me. The Illitches. We've got to spend the next year or two in a rebuild in order to grace that new arena with a hockey team worth watching.

There were multiple chances to avoid Tampa Bay's third & fourth goals.

On the third, first Ericsson chips the puck into Tampa Bay's Johnson, turning a fairly harmless situation into a dangerous one.  That puts Howard in a tough situation, and the Lightning's Killorn outmaneuvers him by going around the goal.   OK, tip your hat to Killorn there.  But we still had Kronwall in position to save the day, but he just doesn't show the coordination to stop the puck from getting back to Johnson.

On the game-sealing fourth, a Red Wings two-on-two rush ends up with the puck in the back of the Wings net after a comedy of errors. First, Larkin throws a careless pass that ends the Wings rush. After Tampa Bay's Johnson performs what seems like a harmless clear, slow-footed Ericsson can't get to the puck which is compounded in a deadly manner when the dinged Glendening skates right past the puck with his head down on his way to the bench. Finally, Richards doesn't find Johnson in open ice (not an easy task), and Johnson's one-timer ends up in the back of the net.

Both of these goals exhibit multiple manifestations of the same "not good enough to make the play" symptom. I guess it's just additional confirmation of what we already knew, that these Wings aren't good enough. I bet that knowledge played a role in Datsyuk's decision to go back to Russia after this year.

Ken Holland needs to go his staff has done an awful job of assembling this team and years past. It's been down hill since Franzen over Hossa. The league has flown right passed them. It's not on Blash but this team lacks size, speed, young talent, and goaltending depth. I know see why Babcock left for the bombshell Toronto is.

and less floaters. A whole lot of watching the other team skate around and trying not to lose instead of taking the play to them. When the shoe was on the other foot the wings would outplay the other teams but their goalies would stand on their heads.

.... is this how weak constituted Hockey fans are these days?

Especially since your Wings fans, i mean, WTF? You guys would end in a puddle of drool if you had to suffer through another "dead wing" era; not to mention, being a top seed losing to an 8th seed.

The Wings are a middling team that is in a decade long "Hall of Famers shrivling before our eyes" transition and making the playoffs was the only gift the hockey gods will bestow on them this year. Of course we are getting owned by the reigning Eastern Conference Champs who have been waitng almost a year for their "season" to start.

My biggest problem is with not playing the younger guys so they get some experience: Jurco, Mantha, maybe a Ouellet or Russo and Pulky on the PP. It probably wouldn't have helped much for this series but it'll help next year if we make the playoffs.

But all that being said; no one has lost at home yet and if the series can be extended Tampa's injuries may become a factor, the upset would be a huge bonus and it's still in play.

Plus it might chase SteveY back home sooner.

That's the only way Stevie comes back.  Holland has drafted well considering they never have a top-15 draft pick, but this was the year to play the young guys.  The playoff streak is the dumbest thing around.  Instead of playing Ouellet, we got a year of Ericsson.  Instead of playing Mantha or Athanasiou more, we get Glendening and Andersson.

The fans would've been forgiving if we missed the playoffs this year but allowed our young guys a year to cut their teeth on the highest level and be ready to make a run next year.  Maybe there's a money, contract issue that's keeping them from bringing up more of the young guys, but we can't let "the streak" stop the long term development of the franchise.
