Beilein and hotseat...is it fair?

Submitted by UMxWolverines on

I realize this seems to be a trend with John Beilein teams...it's either feast or famine in terms of offense because of the lack of a big man most of the time. I don't remember the defense being this bad overall ever though.

Something has to give though. I don't know if it is fair to say he's on the hotseat just yet, but defense has to improve next year and recruiting has to improve.

Izzo had quite the stretch during the 2000s where they were pretty mediocre. I don't think Beilein should be on the hotseat, but improvements must be made.

JB is absolutely elite.  He takes players who were afterthoughts in the recruiting process and turns them into lottery picks.  In fact, he may have screwed himself because there are guys who should be seniors now who are playing in the NBA.

He hasn't been dominant but he's been coaching in the best conference in the country and has won conference titles.  That's pretty impressive.  And he nearly won an NCAA championship which is one of the hardest things to do in sports.  And the only dominant team of the last decade in any conference has been Kentucky.

But, Kentucky is having an off year and Duke is unranked.  SHould Cal & Coach K be on the hot seat too?

Admittedly this is the worst and most lifeless I've seen the team in his tenure.  But, the fact that we're talking about this in a season in which Michigan can still make the tournament is crazy.

Tired of this "it's cool that we can't recruit because we're good guys who don't pay and cheat" line. It's horseshit. Beilein just isn't a good recruiter - period.  Each passing year it is becoming more evident the man lucked out with a few recruits like Stauskas and Trey and that he isn't in fact this wizard at unearthing 5 stars hidden in sheep's clothing.

Great coach, shitty recruiter, period.

It's a fucking joke of a question is what it is...

But yes, they need to recruit better.

He's getting the most out of this team...I don't know why ANYONE would say he's on the hotseat today, but he wasn't a month or even a year ago.

This team isn't that good. Period. He's not going to make this team into some elite power. They're not a great basketball team.

So if he's not meeting your expectations today, I'm sorry, but you don't know what basketball looks like. You should've been livid in June and July.

Even with LeVert, this team gets SMOKED by that Final Four team, that is true before this season, that was just 2 months ago, it's true today. They could win out and it would still be true a month from now.

I'm sorry, but it pisses me off when I was bitching about the shit recruiting 2 years ago and everyone was yelling "IN BEILEIN WE TRUST!!!!" But now, it's different. I actually think he's doing a GREAT job with this team. Because I know talent wise, they're not a great team outside of a few streaky basketball players and Walton.

The expectations many of you had for this team prove to me that you should probably stick to football. This team lost to EMU and NJIT last year...I've said that all year when the bracketology stuff was coming out and people thought we were too low. Now those same people want the coach fired. Unreal.

He got D. Morris a  really good recruit, he got Hardaway (who was a 3, but blossomed) and yes he got Burke ( because OSU had Craft).  Those were good "recruits".  It is more advantageous to get "great" classes.

Burke and Morris were bottom top 100 recruits.  Obviously they were better than their rank. But good look making a living there.

Not False.

I don't disagree with the limited assertion that he's one great class, but if you pull in a Burke or a Hardaway's every year, then I don't think you Fire Beilein for it. Certainly recent recruiting trends are troubling but it's hard to evaluate, as guys like X are similarly rated as guys like Burke and Stauskas. I'm willing to give it time based on past success and the fact that the administration favors being clean over being elite.

We all say how genius Beilein is with judging talent. Ala Stauskas, Hardaway, D Robinson but are we honest with Chatman, Doyle, Walton and even Irvin?  Chatman is a huge bust, Doyle is a mid major player and Walton and Irvin may have been rated higg  but they D league talent at best.

His ONE good class has 4 NBA players in it and Spike (who is awesome and really missed this year).

I prefer to judge good classes with a little balance of where they end up along with where they start.

Chatman and Doyle haven't played two full seasons at Michigan. Do you know what guys like Valentine and Costello looked like their sophomore years? You know, two major parts of the team that just beat us? They were fucking awful.

He has made great strides this year and surprised most everyone, including me.  He is now a very average center in the big ten.  Yippee.

Morgan is a terrible example, he really benefited from his redshirt year and came on his rs freshman year.  Morgan is also a miuch better athlete.

My point is these guys are not elite.

Which round do you think Donnal will go in the NBA draft?

Yes, we can look at what Valentine and Costello looked like in their sophmore season.  Valentine played 30 minutes a game and went for 8 pts, 6 rebs, and 4 assists  a game.  Chatman?  He's getting 7 minutes, less than 3 points and 1.5 boards a game. Costello went for 4 and 3 in 15 minutes a game.  Doyle is getting 4 and 2 in 12 minutes a game.

Worse than the actual stats is that Chatman and Doyle are getting worse this this year than they were last year.  Valentine and Costello got better each year.  At this rate, we can only hope the Chatman and Doyle are as good as seniors as Valentine and Costello were as sophmores.

Valentine also had mind numbingly stupid turnovers every game. Costello was also soft as shit. And Doyle is only getting worse this year because Donnal is playing that much better. You can't point to Doyle regressing and completely ignore the reason why as it doesn't fit your narrative that sophomores are a lost cause. You know, unless they're not and they get better. Like most everyone Beilein coaches

I think coaches have to keep proving themselves every year just like the players do. That said, I don't like a quick trigger finger on the pink slip, especially when a coach has proven success. But your comment just makes no sense. The reality of P5 basketball is that your best players are going to leave early unless they truly are developmental like Valentine. So saying this team would look great if Mitch and Nik were on it is a silly statement. Could you imagine Kentucky, Duke, UNC, Kansas, etc if all of their great players stayed all four years? No one says that because that is not the reality of getting quality recruits. Now maybe Beilein has an agreement that his style and recruiting philosophy will have bad years as well as some good runs and the AD is okay with that. No one knows. But with a new AD coming in, and Harbaugh being Fort Knox safe, Beilein better hope the new guy is okay with that strategy. Of course, Manuel is coming from UConn which knows a little something about competitive basketball, sooooooo...

blow it out your ass.

Brad Stevens made it known that he left Butler because the school didn't provide the resources that he felt he needed to build a long term program that would be competitive. . .If he were given those resources he'd still be there.

Michigan could have had Rick Pitino.  He admitted that he was close but his wife didn't want to go so he went elsewhere.

Michigan has the clout to attract a big name.  Brad Stevens could get the resources that he was clamoring for in Ann Arbor.

if you think my post is the worst homer comment you ever read, you need to read more.. ..

Easy Hawk Harrelson.

If you think a guy would leave the Boston F'n Celtics to coach UM (a traditional powerhouse football school with GOOD not great hoops resources) you're completely delusional. If resources are what he wants he has the best of EVERYTHING in Boston.

Lateral move.

Look at what Bielien did at WVU.  Imagine him at Michigan with Michigan's resources.

We need to hit it out of the park.  Like we did with Harbaugh. Spend some money and lets take the next step that JB cannot consistantly get to.

His 2 fouls in a half rule - his lack of big recruiting.  His lack of Big development.  Now leaving Caris on the bench in an extremely important game instead of giving him minutes (its my understanding Caris could have played minutes LAST week, let alone this week).  25 unanswered points.  2 consecitve blowout losses AT HOME.

Conclusion:  He probably has earned the right for a few more years because he did get us to another level - but if i was AD - i would give him until the end of next year to produce better results.
