Today in worst-kept secrets:

A source with knowledge of the situation has confirmed to CFT that Green received a release from his UM scholarship earlier this week and will transfer out of the Wolverines football program.

Green split time early in his career, alternating frustrating cuts with promising footwork and power as he attempted to slim back down from 250-260 pounds. He did that but the vision never came and when Harbaugh came in he fell out of the rotation in favor of De'Veon Smith, Drake Johnson, Ty Isaac, Karan Higdon, and Sione Houma. A fullback in front of you on the depth chart is never good. Green was left home from the bowl with an "internal matter," and that seemed to be that.

He's got one year left and also graduated in 3.5 years, so he can play immediately. Michigan now has 20 officially open slots; Green's departure was certainly part of the existing reckoning for Michigan's class size and won't increase how many scholarships Michigan has to play with. We currently figure that is 28-30.

Best of luck. I was excited like everyone else when he committed. I met a coach from the Richmond area soon after and he said Green was extremely overrated and 'soft'. I wanted so bad for home to be wrong. He showed flashes but it didn't work out.

Sucks for him that he had to try to run behind some of the offensive lines that he did. With that in mind, maybe Florida isn't the best choice.

Pick a MAC offensive line you like, spend a year learning what a hole looks like, and some NFL team will draft him. Nobody seems to know how to scout vision and the shifty small things great RBs do to make sure nobody can get good contact on them. They do see huge dudes built low with a lot of meat and "angry" shoulders. So long as coaches overrate such things--and boy do they ever, on all levels--he should find a home.

Issac and Green were rated higher out of HS than Henry. So what was the root cause of this massive massive ... yes. .. double failure?

I always thought he showed flashes high quality running back every now and then. Unfortunately he could never put it all together here.  I think he has a chance to be a really good back on a different team next year.

and how insane it is. Remember all of the Twitter edits and shit sent to Green talking about Heismans and NCs? I remember that drawing of Morris, Green and Treadwell (lol) all holding up the crystal ball. That was when we all assumed Treadwell was a UM lock but he goes to Ole Miss, hits expectations and the other two come to UM and bomb out. Green has to become an angry runner to succeed but I'm not sure he has it in him and even if he does he'll never be a guy that takes it 50+. He alsl needs an amazing OL. Rawls isn't even a good comparison as Green has always looked like a bowling ball sitting on chopsticks. He really needed a RS in retrospect. Bad. I'd bet Morris is gone after Spring but we'll see. Just crazy to think of 4 Years ago when they were both the next great hope. It shows how most fans openly ignore weaknesses and negatives they clearly see to feel better about the future. Nothing about their HS play suggested they'd be good in college, tbh. Admit that 4 years ago and you'd be crucified.

fir me Green had a hugely positive effect on the program just during his recruitment process. as you recall it was long and public and in those darker days gave a very clear image that we may be down from time to time but are a top tier power in the broader sense. when the number one ring back in the country was seriously looking at us and even committed, it's not like people elsewhere were whispering like it was some Ole Miss bag men transformation. rather, it was expected that guys rated like him would look at Michigan. yeah later on the field it may have nit quite delivered but he'd already contributed do much by then. Thanks Derrick!

I'd have liked to see him bulk up and be 260 or so, and play DL as he did in HS. Might've been a better fit. He's surely got the strength and agility to be a disruptive presence there......

Yeah, he was an OG at the beginning of high school. Also, he was 5'11" and not particularly tough, so that's not a great combo for defensive line. Moving Vince Helmuth to DT didn't work out so well. It's not a coincidence that running backs don't move to defensive line very often.

Congratulations to Derrick earning his degree in 3.5 years! I know we all were extremely excited when he committed and hoped for great things from him. I hope he does well at his next stop and will definitely root for him.

Thank you for your contributions to Michigan on and off the field. Football is probably the most "team" sport in America. I wish the dynamics at Michigan had worked out better for you and the team, but I respect your efforts and sacrifices.

The very best luck where ever you land in college, the NFL, and your life after sports.
