Rashan Gary Argument

Submitted by Santa Clause on

So my friends and I got into an argument. One of my friends is an OSU fan and the other one is an MSU fan. They told me that IF Rashan Gary committed, then he would start immediately on the d-line. I argued that there was no way in hell because our entire d-line next year is filled with seniors who can play at a high level. I also said that he might become heavily involved in the rotation but not starting. Then my friends said that he is more talented than anyone on that d-line right now, and you have to play the best players no matter what. I'm wondering what you guys think about this? Would Gary sit behind an experienced defensive line or start ahead of all of them like my friends think?

in college football with the D-line he's going to have next year - with or without Rashan Gary.  Although, he'd be even happier with Rashan for sure.  Gary will get a lot of PT next year, but likely won't be a starter.  Unless of course, he beats someone out.   But, that would be really hard to do when your competition are 4th and 5th year seniors, no matter how good you are.

He''d have a chance to play his way into a starting role. But barring some other unexpected departure or probably two injuries, I'd expect him to rotate in, and probably not find more than 33% of the snaps in competitive games. The four starters next year will all be playing on Sundays in 2017. Even if freshmen were allowed to declare, I don't think Gary would.

I see their point in saying that Gary may be more 'talented' than the players we have right now; but not necessarily a better, more effective football player.
I think it is almost a certainty that he will play, but probably not start or get as many snaps as the starting 4. Who knows by the end of the year though.

I find it amusing that your OSU/MSU fans are rationalizing this by trying to turn a great thing for Michigan into to a negative critique of the current talent.

Michigan is loaded on the d line next year. If Henry returns and with adding Gary it will be every bit as talented, deep, and experienced as any line in the country, including Alabama.

If we run a 4-3, which Don Brown tends to run. It also fits our current roster better fwiw. Gary would start at DE the day he stepped foot on campus. If we run a 3-4, he would be behind Wormley or Henry, depending on where Harbaugh wants him. If we get Gary & Henry stays, the D-line will look something like this: DE- Henry, Lo Marshall DT- Mone, Hurst DT- Wormley, Glasgow DE- Gary, Charlton

Title is a little frightening.  I thought Gary had gotten into some sort of argument with the Michigan staff or his mother (who we know loves Michigan).

For the first time in my life I identify with a Philly sports fan, booing Santa Claus.

Did we really need a thread about this? Does it matter if he "starts"? Do you watch football? You do realize, ESPECIALLY on defense, that if you are on the two-deep, you are going to play significant minutes... This thread is stupid.

My friends say Santa doesn't exist, but I know better.

I expect both fans will be become better acquainted with our d-line next year when they set up camp in the backfields of both schools next year, regardless of who is starting!

If all 3 of you are alums of respective schools, your opinion is more valuable, be it you have world class credentials and were probably using the Socratic method while they banged sticks against the table.

If you all are just fans of the teams, you are more credible, simply by choosing to support an institution of  academic excellence, and a football program wtih an unmatched tradition, historical significanc and integrity.

starts or if he backs up somebody. Just as long as he picks Michigan I would be very happy. This has to be one of the best problems a team could have. In fact if someone was to ask me, if you had to name a problem your team would need to fix, What would it be? This would be my #1 answer.

arguments with State fans last winter. Ours were about how many games Michigan would won. They said 7 and possibly 8. I said at least 8 but more likely 10. What I got wrong though is that I really expected State or OSU to be one of those wins. The takeway is that State fans really don't know Michigan's roster.

I think he's immediately one of our top 4 defensive lineman. I don't know if that means he'll start, but I wouldn't mind seeing Glasgow, Wormley, Gary, and Henry on the field together if Henry does come back.

Unfortunately, Gary is going to Ole Miss. But he would start immediately. He has something we don't have on our D-Line, and that's SPEED. Speed off the edge and power on the inside, he can play anywhere.

And it goes deeper than that. It has to do with Ole Miss and their recruiting tactics. From what I'm hearing, and what I've heard from several different people across the nation, they play dirty on another level entirely. Much worse than what the other $EC powers are doing.

He is more talented, but far less experienced. Skill = talent + experience.

Gary plays--a lot--but rotating in rather than starting. Maybe he starts by the end of the year. If that happens, it means he's playing better than the current projected starter at that position. Simple as.

Why is everyone saying that Gary isn't a Michigan lean anymore? Is it because people are putting in Crystal balls for him now or has he said the ole Miss is his leader?
