Rashan Gary Argument

Submitted by Santa Clause on

So my friends and I got into an argument. One of my friends is an OSU fan and the other one is an MSU fan. They told me that IF Rashan Gary committed, then he would start immediately on the d-line. I argued that there was no way in hell because our entire d-line next year is filled with seniors who can play at a high level. I also said that he might become heavily involved in the rotation but not starting. Then my friends said that he is more talented than anyone on that d-line right now, and you have to play the best players no matter what. I'm wondering what you guys think about this? Would Gary sit behind an experienced defensive line or start ahead of all of them like my friends think?

8 man rotation, he'd be part of that rotation. The great players always find a way to be on the field. But he probably doesn't start at Michigan this year (maybe a couple of years ago). Most college stars on his level really make their name as sophomores and then dominate as their juniors before declaring for the NFL. That said, Clowney and Nkemdiche played significant time their freshmen years.

He won't be listed first on the depth chart but he would almost certainly get close to 50% of the snaps. There seems to be this idea among our rivals that Harbaugh inherited a team that is similar to EMU talent wise

Gary as just an "eye test", he might be plowing guys his own age, but I don't think he's going to step right up and plow guys who are a couple years into a D1 strength program (ahead of him).

run a rotation, almost nobody is a true starter in some games. He will serve his purpose this year. It will be crazy to have him and Mone stacked in the middle, what linebackers wouldn't want the?

He won't start at the beginning, but don't be surprised if maybe a game or two at the end. You never know about injuries and how much he will likely improve over the year with good coaching. If he does start - he will have earned it.

As Harbaugh always states: the best players will see the field.

He can only help competition.

You've opened yourself up to a world of humiliation by entering an argument that is in no way able to be verified because Gary isn't even on the team. If he goes elsewhere (OSU, Ole Miss, etc), you look like a goat. If he rides the pine, after selecting Michigan, you lose an argument to a couple of inbreeding fans of your hated rivals. Brush this argument aside and find new friends.

I said IF he was to join us in my post. I also told my friends IF he joined the team as well. They already assume he is coming to A2 but I kept saying IF to protect myself. And there is no way that I'm going to ditch my best friends since childhood because they root for a different football team than me.

He would take all of Godin's/Strobel's snaps which if you noticed were quite a few. You probably remember those snaps by running backs breaking off long runs just about every time -- including the Jordan Howard and Zeke Elliott debacles.

I don't think that's true. Godin spent much of the early part of the season starting in front of Wormley, with mgobloggers asking why is the back-up starting the game? He wasn't the back-up, he was the starter. It was a platoon/rotation and the starter distinction didn't really matter bc they always got equal snaps and sometimes the second guy got more. But Godin played a lot early and played quite well, was hurt, and probably played hurt late. Was his good play a function of poor OL's early and he wasn't as effective in conference play? Possibly, but injury really sapped him late, he was a shadow of his earlier year self. Strobel came in for rotation snaps when Glasgow went dowm, and he stuggled.

He didn't play quite well. He had 17 tackles, 1 TFL, and .5 sacks for the entire season. He did okay. He was passed by other guys, because other guys were better. It's rumored that he might not be asked back for a fifth year. I think the #1 recruit in the country could be more productive.

How can you accurately evaluate a guy who has played against 16 & 17 year old guys vs our current line who has played against some of the best offensive lines in the country for two or three years?  I expect Gary will not be a bust, but if he is, it won't be the first time.

Remember when he was at the opening as a junior in HIGH SCHOOL? He was going up against guys like Mitch Hyatt who is the starting left tackle for a Clemson team that is playing for the national championship and dominating against them. There are sometimes those kinds of freshman who dominate at a very young age. I.E. Clowney, the guy who plays for ole Miss and Joey Bosa. He could be one of those guys.

You mentioned one play in which people started getting excited about Pipkins. He countered with their different rating potentials (although OP had a high rating, he also was 59 spots away from being the top player). Kids rated in the Top 5 of HS generally turn out to be accurately rated. Gary had 3.5 sacks in the all-start game. That's more than one play, and indicative of his not-gonna-miss talent.

Again, too, they are different players. Pipkins rating was as much on his size and potential, while Gary's rating is based not only on his tangible phyiscal measurements, but by his stats and his intangibles (observed work ethic, etc.). Pipkins was like DGreen--talented but with concerns of weight.

The easiest way to lose an argument you think you've won is to attack the person themselves, which you've done. You may still think you won, sadly.

I'd lean to not starting but Gary is highest rated DL out of HS in years. 247 only gives out 100+ scores to a few players over the years & they end up freakish stars (Clowney, Ole Miss DL, etc). Either way I don't want to be the QB getting sandwiched with Gary & Wormley coming around each end!

then the only way he would start is if he was an EE, which he is not. Even then it would be improbable unless he makes hay at weakside end. The 2 slated for that spot, Taco and Marshall, have seen limited snaps there.

I would have redirected the argument towards them and asked them the same question. "Would Gary start on your line next year?" Their answer probably would have been "no," and that's when you print out your stat sheets and compare numbers as well as returning starters vs projected position. The truth is, do you think Rashan Gary is going to start over a 5th year senior in Chris Wormley? Uhhhhh no. Not unless he's hurt.

Are people really still superstitious over hand. He decided to play for Saban instead of Hoke. And even if Gary does choose Ole Miss over UM, why let it effect you like that emotionally. At the end of the day he still is just an 18 year old kid who decided to play for a different football team.

To your MSU friend you can say he probably has same trajectory as McDowell.

Heavy rotation guy year 1, moves into starting role and most likely best DL on team in year 2, dominate Big 10 year 3, goes to NFL to be top 15 pick year 4.

The better question for your MSU friend is if Gary is going to flatten MSU's QB 1, 2 or 3x next year.
