Rashan Gary Argument
So my friends and I got into an argument. One of my friends is an OSU fan and the other one is an MSU fan. They told me that IF Rashan Gary committed, then he would start immediately on the d-line. I argued that there was no way in hell because our entire d-line next year is filled with seniors who can play at a high level. I also said that he might become heavily involved in the rotation but not starting. Then my friends said that he is more talented than anyone on that d-line right now, and you have to play the best players no matter what. I'm wondering what you guys think about this? Would Gary sit behind an experienced defensive line or start ahead of all of them like my friends think?

So of course I misread your title and thought it was an argument about him getting plenty of naps. I couldn't believe the argument was about how much sleep he'd get.

8 rotated at the 3 down positions and 3 rotated at rush linebacker, a standup position similar to Ojumudia / Jenkins-Stone.
You all seem to have forgotten that Godin is also available.
Can you possibly have too many?
Depth is a wonderful thing!

Gary as just an "eye test", he might be plowing guys his own age, but I don't think he's going to step right up and plow guys who are a couple years into a D1 strength program (ahead of him).

I think he would start off as our #2 strongside end.

As Harbaugh always states: the best players will see the field.
He can only help competition.

I said IF he was to join us in my post. I also told my friends IF he joined the team as well. They already assume he is coming to A2 but I kept saying IF to protect myself. And there is no way that I'm going to ditch my best friends since childhood because they root for a different football team than me.

You can't argue with OSU or MSU fans. You can try...but why...?

Spartan fan is that listening to them is just like turning on 97.1, right down to some of the words they use.
I try to avoid arguing with people from Ohio, there is no future in it.

Well, those guys didn't play much until both Mone and Glasgow were hurt. So what you're basically saying is that Gary won't play until two other defensive tackles get injured.

Godin started four games in a 13-game season. He disappeared for long stretches of time. The only time he reappeared significantly was late in the season, probably because he was less productive than the other guys (17 tackles, 1 TFL, .5 sacks). So yeah, I would say the Glasgow thing was a major factor.

He didn't play quite well. He had 17 tackles, 1 TFL, and .5 sacks for the entire season. He did okay. He was passed by other guys, because other guys were better. It's rumored that he might not be asked back for a fifth year. I think the #1 recruit in the country could be more productive.

How can you accurately evaluate a guy who has played against 16 & 17 year old guys vs our current line who has played against some of the best offensive lines in the country for two or three years? I expect Gary will not be a bust, but if he is, it won't be the first time.

Remember when he was at the opening as a junior in HIGH SCHOOL? He was going up against guys like Mitch Hyatt who is the starting left tackle for a Clemson team that is playing for the national championship and dominating against them. There are sometimes those kinds of freshman who dominate at a very young age. I.E. Clowney, the guy who plays for ole Miss and Joey Bosa. He could be one of those guys.

I believe he will be a beast, just want to hear how he does in practices agains our OL, but I am getting ahead of myself as Ufer used to say.

when Ondre Pipkins tracked down the RB from behind?
January 10th, 2016 at 9:27 AM ^
Remember when Pipkins was given a 101 point rating on 24/7? Neither do I.

In the post above. I'm beginning to understand why you are struggling with your acquaintances.
Title leaves a bit to be desired as well.

Not struggling at all. BTW, they aren't my acquaintances, they are my lifelong friends.
January 10th, 2016 at 12:53 PM ^
You mentioned one play in which people started getting excited about Pipkins. He countered with their different rating potentials (although OP had a high rating, he also was 59 spots away from being the top player). Kids rated in the Top 5 of HS generally turn out to be accurately rated. Gary had 3.5 sacks in the all-start game. That's more than one play, and indicative of his not-gonna-miss talent.
Again, too, they are different players. Pipkins rating was as much on his size and potential, while Gary's rating is based not only on his tangible phyiscal measurements, but by his stats and his intangibles (observed work ethic, etc.). Pipkins was like DGreen--talented but with concerns of weight.
The easiest way to lose an argument you think you've won is to attack the person themselves, which you've done. You may still think you won, sadly.

He mentioned playing vs talent. I threw out a single fact and he wanted to discuss stats. I don't, and didn't question the stats.
I am confident Gary will be a beast. I'll still wait to see it on the field, hopefully wearing a Winged Helmet.

Are people really still superstitious over hand. He decided to play for Saban instead of Hoke. And even if Gary does choose Ole Miss over UM, why let it effect you like that emotionally. At the end of the day he still is just an 18 year old kid who decided to play for a different football team.

To your MSU friend you can say he probably has same trajectory as McDowell.
Heavy rotation guy year 1, moves into starting role and most likely best DL on team in year 2, dominate Big 10 year 3, goes to NFL to be top 15 pick year 4.
The better question for your MSU friend is if Gary is going to flatten MSU's QB 1, 2 or 3x next year.
