think it should work like that.  It is akin to the Chicago Bulls always deciding year after year who is going to wear #23 as though it is adequately predicts a measure of performance.  I think it was lesson learned with Countess in #2 and Funchess in #1.

Just going to follow you around this thread and upvote.  The #2 is iconic because an iconic player made it that way.  If Peppers wins a Heisman are we going to now take #5 out of circulation and only give it to some accomplished upper classman?  Seems to be ass-backward.  The player makes the number, not the other way around.  If Rashan Gary or Kareem Walker or hell, Benjamin St.Juste wants to come in and wear #1, I say go for it.  We can have a new #1 every four years for all I care.  It's never going to change my opinion of Anthony Carter.  And it's not going to somehow trick me into thinking the new recipient is any better or worse than his play dictates.

It's just a number.

wanted the top receiver to wear #1 and the top cornerback #2.  He didn't do this at the start of his tenure though.

There was no such practice for #2 when Harbaugh played, so anything goes...

You guys act like number 2 is retired, when it is which will be soon no one will wear it anymore. I believe Amir will not play defense after we get commitments for 2 more CBs and maybe a safety

I love Harbaugh's straightforwardness: "Then you will have it."

This should be made into a meme as the go-to response whenever someone wants something:

Person 1: Who wants ice cream??
Person 2: I do!
Person 1: Then you will have it.

I'm not a fan of retired numberss, to be honest.

Next year, I'd love to see Chesson wear #1, and if Ahmir has #2, great. There are so many good memories I have of different numbers. When I think of #1, I'll always see Anthony Carter streaking down the field. Braylon and Alexander and Terrell carried on the tradition. Obviously, #2 will always be linked to Charles Woodson. If the number is retired, memory of Woodson will eventually fade as well.

To my way of thinking, it is great to keep numbers in play. I personally didn't mind the legends idea, but didn't like how it was implemented. But yeah, I thought Gardner wearing 98 was pretty cool.

Ahmir said this months ago...people just didn't want to believe it. Truthfully, it's old news.

He had no reason to lie about it when he committed awhile back...

"Later, a sixth grader asked Harbaugh why he wore No. 4 when he played. Harbaugh said he initially wanted to wear No. 10, but that request was basically ignored when he arrived on campus.

Harbaugh recalled a conversation with Jon Falk, whom Bo Schembechler hired to be his equipment manager in 1974 and who remained with the program for four decades.

''I told Jon Falk that I would like to be No. 10, and he said, 'Well, you're going to be No. 4,'' Harbaugh said. ''I happened to mention to Coach Schembechler that I really wanted No. 10. Suffice it to say, that was the last time I thought about being No. 10.''"

Any chance that he just had a friend with a twitter account use Harbaugh's icon picture? He may legitimately have the #2 jersey, but it feels odd that Harbaugh is the administrator of the numbers that players wear.

May be legit, but it didn't feel 100% real when I saw it.

They cant retire any more numbers.  There are not enough numbers to go around.  This is why you see 2, number 15s (one on offense and one on defense) and also 2 number 52s.   There have been some Michigan teams with 2 number 2s playing in the same game, since Woodson wore it.

The Legends program was a marketing gimick / joke which did not promote team atmosphere.

I was hoping #1 (Best Offense WR) and #2 (Best Defensive Back) would be saved and only given out to deserving players based on early (Frosh Soph) Success

For some players, their number matters.  Not all players care, but for some the number makes a difference.  Many players are superstitious, or use the number as motivation to live up to expectations.  Some players don't want a certain # because they want to make a name for themselves and not be in the shadow of another.  So the players # matters, just maybe it shouldn't so much for us, the fans.
