And so it begins...  Who is next?

Not sure I would've canned the guy after one bad year, considering he had two playoff appearances the years before, but in the NFL, it's win now or you're fired. Everyone is expecting their next coach to be Bill Belichek.

He'll have plenty of opportunity either this year or next. I could see Tennesee making a push to get him and reuniting him with Mariota, but that'll be a big gamble on their part to completely hand over the coach and GM reins to him. Didn't seem to work out so hot for Philly this season.

If he waits until next season, colleges will be kicking down his front door to have him coach their team.

When you have this conversation with your boss...

"I appreciate all the extra duties you've taken on this year but it looks like it might have been a mistake to ask so much. We think you're getting overstretched--we'd like to redistribute some of it so you can focus on your primary responsibilities and do more of what you do well."

"No. You gave me control over personnel and I'm not giving it back."

...it can only end one way.

So far we have heard a lot of theories as to why he was dismissed:

1. Poor personnel decisions - i.e. should not have been made GM

2. Poor recent record - i.e. what have you done for us lately

3. Poor public relations - i.e. traded away some popular and successful players from a city not known for sentimentality

But may I suggest two other thoughts?

1. He was trying to do something quite different than what other teams were trying to do in the NFL, but may not have committed to it enough.

The big knock against systems like his is that the QB gets hit and you need a pretty athletic mobile QB. The defenses in the NFL are quicker, faster and bigger - they hit harder - so they beat up QBs if you let them get hit.

Consider this notion - rather than try to find that one franchise QB (e.g. Brady, Wilson, Rodgers or Manning) get a couple of athletic mobile QBs and accept the fact that they will all get banged up - consider right now he could have signed Tim Tebow AND Terrell Pryor - both would have jumped at the opportunity to play QB even knowing that they might not finish out the season.

2. Somehow coaches famed for offense can't seem to get a defense worked up. Kelly like Rich Rod are arguably geniuses on offense but can't seem to hire themselves or buy themselves a half way defense. Do any of the old timers recall if Don Coryell or Sid Gilman had decent defenses? The only offensive "genius" with good defenses that comes to mind is Bill Walsh - those 49er times had some decent defenses.

except keeping even two healthy would be a challenge, and the rest of the offense has to get used to the multiples. As posted earlier, the NFL is often more about the individual and not the scheme (New England being a marked exception, although maybe not, considering Brady).

Sid Gillman's early San Diego teams had very good defenses. They led the AFL in fewest points allowed in '61 and '63, were one point from the lead in '65.

Coryell's defense in '79 was second in the NFL but his last half-decade was pretty bad.

While I could see Chip heading to TN, I could see him taking the year off. There could be some major college programs with vacant top jobs next year and there are always a few NFL jobs open each season that he would absolutely be considered for.

Who would've thought the Skins and Gruden would've put the dagger into Kelly?  Yeah, I would never have gotten rid of McCoy, and what the hell was going on with the QB's in Philly?  Still, it's nice to cause some turmoil in the other NFC East teams.

We heard so much about how difficult it is to work or play under Harbaugh. Are we going to start to hear the same things about Chip Kelly? From what I've read, he is not an easy guy to associate with. In addition, it doesn't appear he has the dry humor or funny side of Harbaugh. I do not think there is any way he could fit in at Texas with all of the extra booster requirements. But who knows. My bet is he sits out the upcoming football year.

Start to hear the same things about Kelly??? That noise has been much worse around Kelly than it's ever been with Harbaugh--it goes back at least to the release of DeSean Jackson. Everything from "he won't relate to players...ignores you when he sees you in the hallway" to "he got rid of all the good black players." It's not really all that common for players to rip their former head coach--I think I've seen more of it with Kelly the last two years than the rest of the coaches in the league put together.
