MLive's 5 Things to Watch for Rutgers game

Submitted by Cranky Dave on
MLive's 5 things to watch in Rutgers game starts with Michigan needing more Drake Johnson. I completely agree and thought he was the best back on the team since last season, when he's healthy. He looked good against Minnesota (5.5 YPC) and with Smith dinged up would guess he starts and gets bulk of carries this week. Also talks about potential matchup between Caroo (ankle injury) and Lewis. http://www.mlive.com/wolverines/index.ssf/2015/11/5_things_to_watch_mic…

I was at the game.  It sucked so bad.  When you leave their stadium, you have to take a goddamn bus back to the visitor parking lots and it was filled with Rutgers fans laughing at all the Michigan fans.  Sad sad day.  It's one of those things that made me sick and want to stomp on them the next time we play.

Laviano: 48th ranked in FBS, 129/200, 64.5%, 1536 yards, 7.7 YPA, 12:8 TD:INT, 140.8 QBR

Cook: 37th ranked in FBS, 146/254, 57.5%, 2070 yards, 8.2 YPA, 17:2 TD:INT, 146.5 QBR

Leidner: 100th ranked, 141/244, 57.8%, 1627 yards, 6.7 YPA, 8:6 TD:INT, 119.7 QBR

Rudock: 98th ranked, 134/217, 61.8%, 1443 yards, 6.7 YPA, 6:7 TD:INT, 120.3 QBR

Laviano is a lot closer to Cook than he is to the Leidner/Rudock's of the world, and Leidner carved up our secondary with a really rusty carving knife (he was incredibly lucky). If Carroo is 100%, I think they at least score some points.

I would like to see Drake get more usage as well. He seems like he has the potential to become a great pass-catching RB as well. I really like the way that kid moves in space and he's a tough runner.

I am really getting worried that Drake Johnson might become the next Brandon Minor. That guy was unstoppable at times but was never healthy for a full season. I still wonder what the 2009 OSU game Amy have been like if he'd been 100%. And I wonder if this year's MSU game might have turned out differently if we'd had Johnson.

we beat MSU with a healthy Drake Johnson. Drake didn't play at all and Smith only gained 46 yards at 2.4 yards per. Give Drake half of De'Veon's carries and we get an extra 20-25 yards. We may even get that last first down instead of punting, but it wouldn't have gotten to that with a healthy Drake. If he plays, at least 1 of the 3 FG attempts turns into a TD drive.

I'd guarantee we get the last 1st down of the game with Johnson. Honestly we should have lined peppers up and done a jet sweep, no one on msus team is stopping peppers from getting 2 yards running towards the sideline

We got to be on our A game.  If Carroo is playing, they will have explosive plays and I'm not entirely confident in our pass defense after the past few games.  Rutgers torched us last year and they played MSU down to the wire.  They were overwhelmed without Carroo against OSU and Wiscy so here's to hoping that Carroo is out.

I hope so.  Living in NJ and having to deal w/ these guys constant reminders of last year's game has me shook.  I would assume it's like how you guys have to deal w/ the Sparty trolls at work, etc.  Over here, there are no Sparties so the MSU game was just a game and I got over it quicker than I expected.  The Rutgers loss has been hanging heavy over me everytime I go anywhere around here.

so you have a point. They have lost in horrible fashion in their last two weeks. Carroo missed the Wisconsin game. Prior to that, they weren't horrible. They almost beat MSU. They almost beat Wazzou who just lost by 2 points to Stanford. They won at Indiana, which isn't a terrible result. Sudfeld is the highest ranked B10 QB.

They played WSU at home. I suspect that the score would be different at WSU. Also, they were a healthier team then.

Sudfeld lead IU to 52 pts on Rutgers, but he and his offensive teammates help IU lose by turning the ball over several times. Rutgers and IU are both in the "not good" territory.

how else do you compare teams? You have this habit of defining the terms of a debate and then telling the other person they are wrong because they disagree with your definition. For example, what is "not good?" Not good for a Power 5 team? Not good for an FCS team? Do you divide teams into good and not good categories, or are there great, good, average, mediocre, not good and bad categories? Oh wait, I forgot about "terrible."

Indiana is 68th in S&P out of 128 teams. They are neither good, nor not good. They are average. Rutgers is 105 out of 128, so they are terrible. But how much of that is due to games they've played without Carroo? He's missed three of their games so far. On any given Saturday, they can be not terrible. They can also be terrible. That's why I watch the games, and presumably, why they play them.

I'm inclined to agree with you.  I'm not comfortable with all this certainty going into a game like this.  I don't think Harbaugh will allow anyone to get lax but we really do need to bring our best game.  We're now better scouted than we were 6 weeks ago so a team like Rutgers at least knows where their best shot is.

Having said that, and living in the NY area, I really want a blowout.

This game is different from our recent encounters with other teams:

MSU - just wanted to win.

Gophers - Jerrysota. Grateful for the win.

OSU - just want to win

Rutgers - After we beat the living shit out of them, I want Rutgers players questioning their decision to play football.

That's why I'd really love it if we could run the score up.

That was just a disgusting display last year.  Even the fact that Darboh got screwed out of a first down catch that WAS a catch, reviewed and called NOT a catch when it was clearly a catch, didn't bother me as much as the rest of the game went.  And that's saying something because I'm the kind of guy that will bitch about a blown call for the rest of my life.

If Michigan's able to deliver a big punch early in this game, there's a real chance the Scarlet Knights might just call it a day. The effort over the past two weeks hasn't been great

Not sutre about shutting them out, but I have this feeling that we may very well find ourselves up a score or two rather quickly. If we can get the running game going early, the only somewhat formidable person Rutgers might have in the front seven is LB Steve Longa, as I recall. If you are getting past him, you're probably making some very much needed large chunk plays.

I never understood how annoying a Rutgers fan could be.  I work with one as he attended Rutgers.  For the last year I've heard nothing bout crap from him about how Rutgers is obviously the better team in the B1B because they beat Michigan.  I hope we beat them 98 to 0 and Harbaugh goes for 2.  If you rank teams I wanted to beat this year it was this order:

MSU
OSU
Rutgers.

I totally understand you.  They are totally ridiculous.  When Carroo guaranteed that Rutgers will go to the Rose Bowl and he wore a rose at the B1G Ten media days, that got the whole Rutgers fan base riled up and they put out their predictions for the season.  Almost all of them counted the Michigan game as a sure win for Rutgers.

Rutgers players and fans seriously thought they had a prayer at the Rose Bowl? Rutgers will never go to the Rose Bowl as long as they are in the same division with MSU, Michigan, OSU, and PSU. Once a decade they'll be competitive with that group and even then 2-2 should be considered a success there

Hard hitting and a mean, nasty disposition is what I hope to see from the defense.

They acted like they wanted to be friends with Minnesota instead of beating them down and taking their lunch money.

'Mirror others' opinion that it would be great to see Speight go over the top and hit receivers in stride.

Rushing, passing, pick-6, punt return, and kick return. And I hope the PA announcer says "TOUCHDOWN JABRILL PEPPERS. THE PRIDE OF NEW JERSEY" every time he scores.

I want Rutgers Football to yearn for the days where they could beat up on UConn in the Big East

I expect Peppers to have his best game yet. The defense linebackers need to play better overall and utilize the efforts of our superior defensive line. The offense needs to look like an offense for a change.

I have no problem playing peppers 100 snaps a game. I'll have a problem with him playing 100 snaps vs. Rutgers though. Michigan should be able to beat Rutgers handily without overusing him IMO

I'd rather see Michigan able to control the ball with anyone but Johnson. He's clearly not back to his physical capabilities of last year, and needs more time to build up his speed and acceleration. We will need him against PSU and OSU. With Smith also injured, I'll bet we see a heavy dose of Green/Higdon this weekend.
