Rudock Hate

Submitted by KRK on

I'm and old MGoBlogger.  I'm still an advocate for Haloscan.  I loved the WLA and posted a few things there.  I think RR was a great hire that just didn't pan out.  When I graduated from college this blog switched to Drupal and it was harder to post, the community changed and I found myself with a job that kept me too busy to post.  This blog is great, the community is too.  There's posters that aren't amazing and have horrible opinions but it's so much better than when I was here and we just handle-jacked each other all day.  It's been a rough 8 year for those of us who are still around and I remember watching UM football as a person old enough to think "this isn't what I watched as a kid".  I'm 30 years old now.  And I watch Rudock and think "this is so nice....he doesn't lose every game".  I read Bacon's book and everyone of Devin Gardner's stat lines included two picks.  I loved Devin and think he was such a great player who just was in the right place at the wrong time.  But Rudock is so much less talented and so much more solid than he is.

Please stop saying "if he could throw a deep ball we'd be a top 10 team".

Please stop saying "if we had a real QB we could be Ohio State"

Please stop forgetting that most people thought 8-4 was a good season this year.

This team has performed exactly as expected.  Rudock may have more picks than expected but those are mainly from the first game and that was just a better team.  He and this team will be good, not great.  I'm excited too but let's not act like this team are defending national champs returning 22 starters.  They are basically what everyone expected.  2-1 with a winnable game against a good BYU team.  They've improved and have a chance to be competitve against everyone they play.

Hate Rudock if you want but don't act like it's been better around here the past 7 years.

Sorry to rain on your parade but football is never going to change, you are as good, and will only go as far as your QB will take you. You need a good QB and that's what we have been lacking for the past 8 years, and yes I love you denard but how good would we have been if we actually had a qb and could have denard out there as a Percy/Braxton role. That's exactly why Michigan state has been so good over that span too, their last 2 qbs have been very good, and one is already in the league, and the other one will be an NFL QB also. Hell just look at the one year when they didn't get good QB play with maxwell, they finished like 7-6.... All this hate is warranted, anyone who ever has watched a football game knows that the quarter back is the most important player on the team, please quit downplaying it sir

Rudock played terribly today. I mean just awful. You can pretend all you want, but if he plays like that in big games, Michigan will get slaughtered. Luckily it was UNLV.

I was born on a  rainy day.  I remember playing Halo back when I was a kid and Michigan football was good.  After I graduated from college, I got a job and was busy.  Also, I think Rudock looked like balls today against an awful defense.

Is this how we're posting stuff around here now?

Sorry to be one of the disagreeing ones, but our 1st string QB has not looked good.  If you want to put the angel halo over your head and wish for peace in the ranks, thats fine.  We all support the team, its why we're here, and it's why we're passionate.

Ruddock has messed up 90% of his passes over 10 yards, even after the WR has beaten the coverage.  It screams for fan bases to speak out and get frustrated.  I dont write much here, but I think it is well within every mgobloggers right to speak up with how shakey our QB situation has been, because it has been VERY suspect.

*did I mention 5 INTs already against some mediocre defenses?

edit: your comment about, "dont act like it's been better here the last 7 years" screams settling for mediocrity.  This is Michigan fer god sakes.  We dont settle for mediocrity, even if its "better" than recently.

3 games vs 45 when people finally called for hoke's head hell i was flabbergasted when hoke was hired in the first place, and douchebag dave always pissed me off (so does hackett in some ways that won't be popular here) but i'm not a child who blames the QB for running backs who can't find holes and receivers who make the wrong cuts and expect a new QB to be at top form already. Watching a lot of football the past 3 weeks, i see a lot of INTs, a lot of bad play by new QBs. I expect ruddock will improve as the season goes on, i know it'd be even worse if morris was in there, and hopefully with hoke and DB gone we won't have to rely on grad transfers at critical positions again

The criticism is warranted.  Hell, John Navarre was ridiculed endlessly.   If that's the standard, then yes, we should be highly critical of Rudock.

navarre wasn't any better his first year and had way more a supporting cast. Chris Perry > any RB we have now by far, same with the o-line and receivers yeah ruddock isn't 18 year old freshman, but he's on a new team just the same

Has not been accurate with his throws. I hope he improves because next week we will probably need to pass more to drive the ball on BYU. If Rudock has another bad game our D will break against BYU and it could be a long day. I trust Harbaugh will work hard to improve Rudock's passing game. He needs to improve if we have any chance against beating Northwestern, MSU or OSU. Harbaugh must not be very impressed with Morris to redshirt him. I t hink the 2016 and 2017 will be much better with a QB who will be able to hit his short and long reciever and that QB will be Mr. O'Korn.

I'm pretty late to this conversation, but what exactly is the point of this thread? We have who we have on the roster and we have a coach who excels at developing QBs. Are people ANGAR that Harbaugh isn't a god?

Let me add my name to the chorus finding this thread dumb.

I agree with you--anyone saying we'd beat Ohio State with a better QB is a moron.

But if you're looking at what Rudock is doing and are in any way satisfied or think he's doing OK, you may also be a moron. The interceptions are bad enough.  But the absolute inability to hit any pass of more than 5 yards is ridiculous and will make it impossible for us to compete against good teams.  And the 'it's all the receivers' fault' or 'he's still learning the system' excuses are getting very old indeed.  His passes simply have not been accurate or even really all that close.  Fact of the matter is, while Speight may not have completed either of those late passes, they were pretty damn close to right on the money, and far more accurate than any 5+ yard pass thrown by Rudock.

Should we trust this staff?  Of course, but if anything that should only make us more uneasy about what sits behind Rudock.  I went back and read Brian's QB preview after week 1, and it was startling--I've never seen such variance between a prediction and the facts on the ground.  I'm not faulting Brian here, I'm merely pointing out that Rudock has not been as advertised.

Game management?  Yeah, OK, but let's not forget that with the running game (and perhaps more importantly, offensive line) we had with Griese, we could afford a passing game that was middling.  We don't have that luxury here, and Rudock is no Griese.

As for this 'let's be happy being mediocre' garbage--is there not a MAC team you should be rooting for?  I think most of us are willing to agree that it will take some time for us to get back to the top.  But in the meantime, I think we're well within our rights to make legitimate criticisms of a QB who is performing at a level well below what was expected (and well below the level of a legitimate DI QB).

year 1 with a new coaching staff, is it not? The only other option for qb would have been Wilton or Shane. Given their history the odds for success has to go to Rudock. Under the circumstances, and considering the last 4 years, a bowl game is success for this year. How YOU possibly expect ANYTHING more? Christ, people like you need a life.

Everette Golson and Vernon Adams got to campus later than Rudock and are also playing in their school's offensive system for the first year and they are playing MUCH better. Stop with the excuses for Rudock he hasn't looked good and IMO the alternatives can't be that much worse. Speight already looks like he has more touch on the deep ball.

What history with Speight are you referring to?

And, I am reasonably pleased with what the team has done so far, but that cannot be credited to Rudock.

I need a life because I have the temerity to criticize a QB who has been demonstrably mediocre?  What is the point of having this website if reasonable criticisms are out of bounds?  Is this just  a cheerleading blog?

Couldn't agree more. Ruckock can't even be referred to as a "game manager." A game manager makes the accurate easy throws and limits turnovers, he's done neither for UM. Find someone that can make some simple throws. Out of the 6 QBs we have, someone has to be able to do it.

I think Jake is a little nervous. He'll probably get over that and settle in. Some of the short stuff to Butt is a little scary and caused that pick against Oregon State, otherwise he is pretty accurate and is consistent. He also holds the ball for a while instead of running but I applaud him for at least trying to look for an open guy.

Also keep in mind that at least one of those picks wasn't entirely his fault and he should have another TD (the one to Houma yesterday). He still completes a high percentage of throws and will get better timing as the year goes on. If not then the ceiling of this team is pretty clearly in the hands of the defense.

Hopefully with film and practice he will spot them and get more comfortable taking chances.Thing is, a guy with nearly half a dozen picks in the first quarter of the season may get a little gun shy in an offense that emphasizes not turning the ball over.

He's garbage. Notre Dame got 2 badass QB Ohio got like 4 lol. Even Texas found a QB and we have make Ruddock. We need more athleticism at the QB position. Until then we are just average team. Go blue

Does not have "4 bad ass QBs". They don't even have one bad ass QB. Jones threw two awful picks against NIU yesterday and was replaced by Barrett who also threw a bad pick. They have a Game changer at RB that they refuse to give the ball to consistently and they have zero X receivers or outside stretch the field type of guys. Devin Smith may have been the MVP of last years team.

Yes, Rudock needs to improve.  But as Harbaugh said, his job is to win games.  We're 2-1 and could be 3-0 if Rudock's receivers run the right routes and don't slow down their routes.  And that was against a good Utah team, first game of new regime, on the road, under the lights.  Rudock's been in Ann Arbor for less than 6 months, working with the team for less than that, in a new offense for everybody.  Our offense is competent for the first time in years, and relatively minor improvements will make it pretty solid.  Numerous times Rudock has worked his way through his progressions and made good decisions. Yes, he's also thrown too many INTs.  He's not perfect yet but fer gods sake, settle down and step off the high horse of perfection. Yes, Rudock needs to improve, but let's give the kid a little more time and support and see what happens.

Nobody hates the kid.  We hate the fact that we are in this situation, i.e. none of the highly touted QB's on our roster have the talent or have been coached up yet to the point where they are better than a 5th year guy who is an average college QB. And it's especially trustrating because the rest of the team has shown marked improvement in the short time the new coaching regime has been here.

We know we should be rational and patient.  But we are fans.  We are very emotionally in this school and its teams. Stop asking us to be rational and patient. :)

The funniest thing to me is people calling for Shane to start. He couldn't even consistently hit a seven yard pass. I think it's safe to assume that the competition for starting QB was not even close. Say what you want, but I think Jake will continue to get better as he gets more comfortable with the offense. He's never going to be the best QB in the country, but I think he can be a consistent 18-25, 225 yard type guy who limits his INTs and hits a few more open guys in the endzone.
