Harbaugh at U-M or Your Favorite NFL Team?

Submitted by mchicagoblue on

In the thread discussing the end of the Michigan hockey season / potential new coaches (http://mgoblog.com/mgoboard/mel-pearsonhockey-season-postmortem) , Mike Babcock was brought up. He's probably not a realistic candidate, but a couple people said they would rather see him stay where he is anyway.

So, my question is: If Jim Harbaugh was the coach of your favorite NFL team, would you still have wanted him to come to Michigan, or would you have preferred that he stayed where he was?

Let's rewrite the thread to make it clearer.  The question SHOULD be "would you rather see your favorite pro team win or Michigan?" Or "Should the Cleveland Browns have pulled the trigger last year and made the trade for him as it was rumored?"

Same answer to both rewritten questions as well as your original OP.

No.

Fucking.

Way.

Great. This totally needed to be discussed... And certainly needed its own thread.

Hmm... Sorry to thread jack. But if you could travel back in time, would you still have chosen to pork that nasty chick from freshman year? Or, alternatively, did you really need to eat that ham sandwich?

I'll put it like this - I would have been pretty disappointed if the outcome had been different and Harbaugh stayed in the NFL, even in some weird, contrived scenario where the Lions (the team I cheer for) were somehow involved. My love of things Michigan far outstrips a lot of things in my life, including my Lions' fandom. So, as others have said - Michigan, and there's not really a contest here.

Easy choice. Michigan, and its really not even close. The NFL is great and all, but I don't have a passion for my favorite pro team like I do for Michigan. I hope the Bucs do well, but its not going to bother me if they don't. I live and die by what happens to Michigan.

Maybe that's a product of growing up in Florida around a small-market team and a bunch of Northern transplant fans who crowd the stadium on Sundays anyway. But yeah, if Harbaugh had either the option of going to Tampa or going to UM, I'd want him to go to UM and I'd never think twice about it.

College holds a lot of memories for us and football and other sports are part of that experience. I can't imagine that this compares to a pro team, whose billionaire owner may just move the team if he or she gets the right tax breaks and stadium deal.

I wanted him at Michigan because they needed him more. Plus I knew when the Bears fired Emery and Trestman because Virginia McCaskey was pissed at how the team has been run the last 5-10 years, they'd make a good hire (Fox). I think Harbaugh is more valuable to Michigan because he gets new players all the time, which makes it hard for his way of coaching to wear on people.

Michigan. But I will say I'm glad he went to the NFL, proved he's an amazing coach at the pro level and is at Michigan now. I think his negative experience in the pros (having stupid ownership/not having more roster control) and his warm homecoming to Ann Arbor will keep him here for a long long time.

My answer is definitely JH at Michigan, instead of with the Detroit Lions.  However, I wouldn't mind Harbaugh giving Caldwell a lesson or two on in-game decisions.  Some of Caldwell's calls down the stretch were head-scratching at best.  Seems like Caldwell gets the Lions more than prepared for games (the only game we weren't really in was the NE game), but his decision making is certainly something that can be improved
