Webber at Crisler -- his picture
It seems the repairing of the links to Fab five has started. CW's picture now appears in Crisler. I am not sure how to feel about this. He did hurt the program, but also one cannot deny the fact that Fab five put UM basketball on the map.

I mean, yeah he was great, but he basically helped wreck the program for 10+ years with no sign of being concerned whatsoever. What are we supposed to say? "Hey! Thanks for the two years of (vacated) fun and 10 years of basketball misery!"

He did nothing wrong. The NCAA rules are what's wrong. It is now, finally, being fixed. Welcome back, CWebb.

Taking six figures as an amateur athlete isn't wrong?
Hrm.

HOW much money he took?? Illegal benefits, are illegal benefits. The amount really dosen't matter.

into their shoes, and I came from a disadvantaged upbringing (Webber didn't) I might have taken a free dinner at the Jug or $50 to take my girlfriend out or borrowed a car for an evening. This all would have been wrong, but I may have been able to rationalize it. $six figures is on another level entirely.

You signed "Herm" wrong.

I thought you were "leaving it at that?"

Not when the amateur status is a sham for other people to appropriate what is rightfully yours, no.

For all the outrage they didn't build him a statue, it's a small picture in a glass case with other former players and members of the AD. Most of you wouldn't have noticed if this article wasn't written.

Hopefully,'more gestures' by BOTH sides will be forthcoming with acknowledgement by BOTH sides that this has been discussed and dealt with.
I really would like for CWebb return to the fold and work begins on the Orr,Fisher,Ellerbe & TA classes, bringing ALL classes together.

It was 20 years ago...
There is no reason why everyone shouldn't move forward. It happened. Taking down pictures and banners doesn't erase anything. And I've also never understood why it's can't both be celebrated and digraced.
Why can't I love what was great about the Fab Five while also being disappointed in what was bad about it?
Is there some rule that says if you highlight the positive things from those teams you must dedicate equal space for the negative things about those teams?
No. Love/Hate or Good/Bad don't always have to be seprated or equally acknowledged. You can love your job and hate your boss, or a particular job responsibiliy, etc. You can love Michigan Athletics and hate it's Athletics Director. You can love your child and be disappointed when he/she messed up.
They did wrong, but it's not like they cheated to win. In that case, you absolutely cannot seperate the two. You can't celebrate a team who cheated to get championships, accolades, etc. If that was the case, those pictures should never be up - ever.
But it's 20 years. This should no longer be a big deal to ANYONE. You don't have to love them, they don't have to kiss and make up, there doesn't need to be an apology. Just move on. No one is saying if you're a Michigan fan you have to love the Fab Five. Just like no one says you have to love the 1997 football team.
But there's no reason to act like we need to continue to make this a big deal. No matter if the University chooses to display the Fab Five or not.
Note: I have no expressed my opinion on whether I like/forgive/etc. Webber or the Fab Five. I'm simply trying to bring up a point that you don't always have to take sides. You can love the Fab 5 and be disappointed in how it ended and parts of what happened when they were at Michigan. I'm also saying this is old...and IMO, everyone should just move on from it. We don't have to move on together, we don't have to move on all loving or hating Webber or the Fab Five. It was 20 years ago. Get over it like you got over the girl or guy who dumped you, it's really not that serious anymore.

Why in the world is OP getting negged? Regardless of your feelings about Chris Webber (the bitterness suprises me though) this is definitly board worthy.

was wondering the same thing myself.

...but I think it's because he said something about the Fab Five putting Michigan Basketball on the map. And that pissed a lot of people off.
October 24th, 2014 at 6:29 PM ^
basketball was already on the map before the Fab Five came to campus. A national title, finals fours, all americans...Michigan had all of these before those five kids arrived in Ann Arbor.
A Michigan fan should not be so uninformed as to say that the "Fab Five put Michigan basketball on the map".

http://www.mlive.com/sports/flint/index.ssf/2014/08/chris_webber_will_release_book.html
"You're about to have a lot more to talk about, because I have a book that's coming out this summer that's going to tell the truth, because everything you've heard has been stories of writers that weren't there or people that wanted to lie, so we're going to shock the world with a book and a documentary," Webber said.
When is this coming out?
October 24th, 2014 at 7:22 PM ^
What new info could he possibly offer that would "shock the world"? (I know that was the Fab Five's mantra in '92.)

Are we supposed to just pretend he doesn't/didn't exist as a player? Yeah, that sounds sane. If he's willing to come back, and be a supporter, I say give him a shot. Find ways of mending that fence, don't just try to ignore the fact that it's broken, or worse - sit there stewing about in, beer in hand, bitching to the neighbors and anyone else that will listen. Not saying forget.
