I guess I don't really get it. He couldn't recall the explanation off the top of his head on a radio show. That doesn't seem facepalm worthy.
We all know Hoke is a bad coach and will be fired. Do we really have to take every opportunity to shit on the guy for the next two months? I mean come on. He's trying to prepare for his next game, he's probably stressed to the max dealing with a lot of shit, and he was obviously flustered and caught a bit off guard by the question. It wouldn't kill us to cut him a break once in a while.

The point is not that he couldn't remember the explanation. I think it's more likely, based on what it sounded like, that I don't think he even questioned the ref about it, hence he didn't have an explanation and was just scrambling to cover his butt on the question before Brandy let him off the hook.

It you rewatch that sequence, it's clear he was discussing the clock with an official on the sideline as it was happening.

I just can't believe this came out of the mouth of a guy paid millions of dollars to coach college football.

Brady Hoke is not a very precise man.

Can someone tell us what this is about, since the OP is apparently above that.
I have a guess and I'm hoping that it's wrong.

I'm a little confused too, but it sounds like he didn't understand the explanation the Big Ten gave him about some clock issues, but he was satisfied by it.
October 8th, 2014 at 9:39 PM ^
Thanks. I just listented and it's not what I feared. (It's about the clock running at the end of the game and what the official told him.) Someone should check on whether the official handled that correctly. If he did - and Hoke had reason to believe he was calling it correctly - then I'm not too worried that he couldn't remember the explanation. The guy has a lot going on in his life right now. I'd probably struggle to remember that, too, and I suspect that I engage a little more with my surroundings than Hoke seems to.
October 8th, 2014 at 9:47 PM ^
First off, the question wasn't whether the explanation was satisfactory, the question was basically asking what happened, there at the end when the clock ran down without stopping. He couldn't remember because he was likely unaware at the time and didn't even realize Michigan got time stolen from it.
As a coach, you wouldn't forget back calls that could have cost you the game. You just don't forget those things.

If he got an explanation from the official for why the time was ticking, he very likely asked for an explanation for why the time was ticking. It's easy to say things like "You just don't forget those things," but I'm more than willing to bet that you've never dealt with the kind of professional and personal scrutiny that Hoke's dealing with right now... all while trying to prepare his players for the next game. Look, I'd like to see someone else coaching Michigan next year, but you can cut the guy a little slack every now and then.

about the extra clock runoff that allowed Rutgers to run out the clock by incurring an illegal procedure penalty.
http://mgoblog.com/mgoboard/clock-rule-ru-illegal-motion-play
If it's not an officiating error, it's a flaw in the rules. I don't think anyone would advocate that an offense should be able to run out the clock by taking penalties.

More proof he is in over his head. I think the fact he doesn't wear a headset or clipboard is because the details are just too much for him to handle. He is really the rah-rah guy and the public face of the team but when it comes down to really having a handle on things like 90+% of head coaches he does not. That would be fine if the coordinators and position coaches were excellent and the players knew exactly what to do, but they aren't.

I actually like hoke. Kids love him, and he cares about the kids.
He just can't fucking out scheme my australian shepard.
I think its a shame what has happened to our team.

Ever see the movie "Dave," where Kevin Kline plays the President and a guy who looks just like the president?
I think the real Brady Hoke is in a coma that he slipped into after the joys of 2011 OSU game, and the coach we have now is his long lost twin Grady Hoke. Who looks and sounds the same but has no idea where he is right now.
October 8th, 2014 at 9:52 PM ^
I agree that he just doesn't seem like the same guy. I think the saddest possible explanation is that he hasn't really recovered from losing his father, who passed away that offseason and seemed like an awesome guy.
In general, my feelings about Hoke are that we're pretty clearly nearing the end of his tenure, and he's a good man who deserves a graceful exit. He's losing his dream job because he was in over his head. It's not because he did something unethical or doesn't care about his players or started undermining Michigan for his own benefit or anything like that; he's just not cut out to be Michigan's head coach. And that's fine. Literally every player and coach I've ever heard talk about him, past or present, says that he's a wonderful man. No, he shouldn't be our coach, but he should be able to see his coaching career end with dignity.
October 8th, 2014 at 11:41 PM ^
Because Hoke is well regarded as a person, it wouldn't surprise me if he is allowed to resign as a coach and is reassigned as an associate AD - similar to Bump Elliott in 1968. That will allow a smooth transition to a new coach with minimal disruption to the football program. After that, Hoke may find a new career as an AD elsewhere, again similar to Bump Elliott.

For the seniors, going out on a down note
For the underclassmen, probably more changes and more turmoil
For the fans, except for 2011, year 8-? of a rebuilding process
Getting one's dream position and seeing it go downhill must be tough.
October 9th, 2014 at 12:29 PM ^
It's actually year 4 of a deconstruction process. RR had mostly rebuilt the team before Brandon sabotaged the 2011 recruiting class, followed by the inability of Hoke and his assistants to properly develop talent.

I'll always like Brady Hoke and view him as an "aw, shucks" kind of guy-this audio simply shows that he's human. I can also hear the fatigue in his voice; this job and this situation is really wearing on him.
