Some really nice throws in here.
He looks very accurate. Some of those passes are on point, but I guess you should expect that from a highlight clip. His tape is better than I anticipated.
And while he doesn't have an elite Shane Morris-esque arm, it is certainly not a 4/10. His delivery is just a touch long, and he... well, he ain't Denard in the mobility department... but he throws a nice accurate ball, he looks pretty technically sound for a high schooler, and he can "make all the throws" as they say.
I like the kid's game. But I'm a blogging golden retreiver.
I think that could lead to criminal charges.
But that's kind of the whole deal with the recruiting scene. Assuming the numbers breakdown as a bell curve, none of these recruits are "below average" on really anything. Even the 2 stars that get picked up. But if everyone is a 7 thru 10, well, then everyone looks closer than they really are.
So maybe on players that a 3+ star, Malzone is a 4/10 (I've personally been critical of Malzone's arm strength). But, as seen even in Brian's in-coming player summaries, everyone is always great at pretty much everything, because it's compared to their high school peers and from people that are required to have a relationship with these recruits and their coaches to some degree. So the whole thing is a bit flawed in that regard.
Also, this is the background on my work computer. It makes some laugh, and others a bit nervous. But it sometimes feels all too real. Nothing like a Golden Retriever doing human things. It's funny because it's true
I guess that's the problem with trying to put attach a number to everything, is that it all depends on the scale, which is usually where the whole thing breaks down. I especially love that people try to give a numeric value to "intangibles." I understand the impulse, but... yeah.
Bottom line is that I think his arm is strong enough. He seems to be able to throw the deep ball with some good touch, and it at least looks on highlight tapes like he can throw the out. but he definitely won't have that extra "I was slow on the read but I can get the ball there RIGHT NOW so it'll be okay" margin of error that Morris has.
He has an 8 on intangibles. That makes him very intangable.
But if he was a 10, would that make him tangible? And that would be bad, right?
McCarron didn't have the most elite "tangible" attributes as evidenced by his 5th round draft selection. I think we'd all agree he was a solid college QB. (Alabama surrounding talent caveat nothwithstanding)
with you head out the window on US 31 near South Bend this morning. Was that you?
Have your owner get you some goggles, you'd be the coolest dog on any freeway (and not get cataracts in the process).
I hope some of those scores reflect poor/incomplete scouting, but visually that's a really misleading graphic. Wouldn't you expect a "7" to have 70% of the bar shaded? It looks like about 45% of that bar is shaded (and the others are equally weird).
Time, I think, to sign up a QB. I appreciate the earlier work done on the west coast to try to land a 5* guy...but I believe a guy with a crisp accurate throw is going to get the job done just as well. As always, a guy who really wants to come and play and is dying for an offer I think is going to make up for some of that "star differential" by being close to home, and by really being invested.
Love that we have the Nussmeier QB guru to help develop him as well (if this pans out according to conventional wisdom). I hope that Nuss will stay with us a few years to help advance and develop these guys' skills.
I just had this positive pipe dream about Nuss, suppose in 4 (or so) years we could contend for the BCS playoff...that would be possibly the best resume in college football of any non-head-coach. Won 2 NC at Bama, then brought Michigan back from the brink of the abyss....dream on...its still free 8-)
As another poster mentioned, he would be a solid prospect and will have about 3 years to develop for his chance to compete for a starting position. I don't know if Morris and Speight are indicators of what the coaches are thinking in regards to the QB, but so far it seems that that is a postion thay they like to wrap up early in the recruiting cycle.
The QB for Michigan's last Big Ten championship team was the lightly-regarded (and much-abused) John Navarre.
Besides we already have our Navarre-like object in Speight. Here's to hoping Malzone mirrors Greise's success. Or maybe Krenzel is a better comparison as a lightly regarded in-state guy who found a lot of success.
"Fasten Seatbelt" is a sign of the Illuminati.
most accidents happen within 5 miles of home.
On a serious note - One of the more important functions of of the restraints on an air-bag equipped vehicle is to keep you from accelerating into the air-bomb as it is being propelled toward you by a violent explosion. Buckle up, humans are not built to be ping-pong balls.
I think the coaches are hesitant of breaking the streak of offering qbs who are currently committed elsewhere...
I originally didn't want to offer Malzone, but have changed my tune. I thought the only reason people were interested was because he was in our back yard. He may not be an elite prospect (5 star), but is a much better prospect than I realized. I would love to offer this kid. I think you will see him rise up the rankings most of his senior season.
who will go with you and dance with who brung ya!
If you can't be with the one you love, love the one you're with?

Could it be a prophesy for (finally) another Rose Bowl for Michigan?
Nope. If Malzone commits, he was our first choice and is just an underrated recruit who is poised to blow up and/or out-play his rankings once he arrives.
Where you username fits exactly what you are posting.
But, I could see this being one of our worst classes in a while. We are striking out on quite a few priority targets. Another disasterful season and this class will turn into fifteen members, eleven of which being three star projects from the state of Michigan.
but I like your invention of "disasterful."
is not a popular opinion.
a number of times in the last 6 years and the season collapsed in the heart of B1G play and recruiting tailed off as a result. This season will be made or broken in late October and November and I wouldn't be surprised if recruits held off for that reason.
You should know better by now than to do things like complain about recruiting on mgoblog.
The correct thing to say here is "I don't care what any of the recruiting services think and I don't care that the kid's best competing offer is Pitt!! Our coach wants him and that means he is super underrated! Recruiting rankings don't matter!"
Just a couple of weeks ago Malzone had a workout with a bunch of coaches present, including Nuss, and supposedly put on a great display of accuracy, touch, delivery, etc etc etc. Nussmeier is making it a point to see potential QB offerees in person, and I would bet that he doesn't give two shits about numerical evaluations by outfits like 24/7, Scout, or Rivals. Or even one shit.
The rating services are evaluating QB prospects and from Nuss's point of view, not a single shit is given?
BUT Nussmeier also watched numerous other QB's throw and offered all of them before Malzone. I just don't think an offer was going to Malzone if ANY of the other offeree's would've shown even the least bit of interest in attending Michigan.
Like I said, I'm by no means hoping for a failure of a season or recruiting class ect. ect., I can just see the ship sinking with another 7-5 season - which seems very likely at the moment. We just lost a 2 X All-American, a 3rd round RT, and the program's most productive receiver in years. It just doesn't seem like the offense can get that much better especially after seeing the 'progress' or lack thereof in spring ball.
Or is that just our tray tables?
I think people go a little overboard with the importance of loving Michigan before these kids get here. Once they're at Michigan, yeah it's important, but I didn't love either my undergrad school or my grad school before I went. Now I love them both. I'm not sure there's any real difference between Denard and Shane in how their pre-Michigan love of Michigan affected / will affect their performances.
Is this Singletary's signal for a commit?

EDIT: Guess so!
Haha. Amusing to me how this thread chronicles the timing of the commit. Let's just all move to the ill-titled latter thread.
