Will the Natty Inspire the Lions?
The Pistons won their first NBA championship in 1989, right after the Wolverines won their first NCAA tournament championship. Can our CFP championship inspire the Lions to their first Super Bowl win?

They can start by beating the Rams.

Selling Lions jerseys in LA would be a good start.

Perhaps you know --- is there a Lions bar anywhere in LA? Looking for somewhere to watch Sunday evening.
You are right --- it's impossible to find anything Detroit in LA.

Axel Foley is a great guy!

Get The Fuck Outta Here
January 11th, 2024 at 9:15 PM ^
Just go to a Rams bar. There will only be Lions fans there anyway.
January 11th, 2024 at 8:11 PM ^
I'm sure Hutch is fired up. It looks like the record for sacks in a playoff game is 4.5, so watch him get Stafford five times.
January 11th, 2024 at 8:33 PM ^
They need to find an excuse to get Aidan a ring. He stayed and he led the team through the transition to a dominant force in college football.
And he did it by dominating. It's still shocking to read the UFR: +39.5!
Also shocking: Our DL this year, as a whole, was better. The best in the country. The best we've ever had.
January 11th, 2024 at 8:15 PM ^
All I know is the Lions organization is leveraging this season, hard. The season ticket price hikes I’m hearing about are pretty hardcore. They better be sure they are good. Come out and get smacked in this game 40-13 and there are going to be some pissed off fans.
January 12th, 2024 at 8:30 AM ^
My season tickets went from like $2200 to $3800 so yeah, they are nuts with what they're doing.

Every time I ripped a fart MSU got scored on. This fall I'm only eating beans.

The 1997 championship inspired the Lions to 9-7.
January 11th, 2024 at 8:24 PM ^
Barry ran for 2000. That was a *great* year of football. Maybe the best I've ever experienced.
...Until this year.

Red Wings won the Cup in June

Technically, that Detroit Lions season was already over (the playoff loss to TB where Scott Mitchell completed 40% of his passes for 78 yards occurred on Sunday 12-28-1997) a few days before Michigan's football season ended (1-Jan-1998).
In the case of Michigan's 1989 basketball and 1998 hockey titles --- the Pistons' and Red Wings' seasons were still on-going when Michigan's season ended.
Net --- what I'm about to say is not false. The last 2 times Michigan won a National Championship and the Detroit professional team's season in the same sport was still on-going, Detroit won the League Title. The 2023-24 Lions fall into this group.
January 11th, 2024 at 8:22 PM ^
Don’t have a great feeling about the game but it would cap off an amazing week if they win.
January 11th, 2024 at 8:30 PM ^
It feels “too big” for a Wildcard playoff game. I feel like we are going to see a lot of nerves from the Lions.
January 11th, 2024 at 8:23 PM ^
Yes. The Lions were planning on losing until they saw a local college win. Now they have changed things up and are planning on winning.
Great post, OP.

I hope the Red Wings get inspired.
Last time Michigan won so did the Red Wings

Detroit Lions Super Bowl LVIII Champions
As long as they don't wear those ugly gray uniforms during the game.

Automatic -1 for "Natty." Please stop.
January 11th, 2024 at 9:03 PM ^
All I know is that Natty would inspire me to BYOB next time I visit.
January 11th, 2024 at 9:10 PM ^
this would inspire anyone
January 11th, 2024 at 9:44 PM ^
That is the only image I think of when I hear the term “Natty.” I’m assuming many of us who went to college before the internet agree.
January 11th, 2024 at 10:37 PM ^
"Brewed in America since 1977" - nothing classier than that.
January 11th, 2024 at 10:39 PM ^
If these guys took over the sponsorship of the Championship game, it could be the Natty Bo.
January 11th, 2024 at 9:12 PM ^
I truly hope they do win. I lived in Buffalo during the 4 year run and the so-called Music City miracle (It was a forward pass!) so I understand how hungry a city and region can be.
But like Lucy, Charlie Brown and the football, I have to see the Lions win a playoff game before I can solidly banish those three letters that spel out the sun in Latin.
January 11th, 2024 at 9:13 PM ^
It should be illegal to call anything except Natural Light “Natty”
It’s a National Championship and it has earned its full name
January 11th, 2024 at 9:26 PM ^
yes, thank you. the players can call it a 'natty' if they want, they earned it and they're teenagers-early 20's. for a grown man whose gut exceeds his chest (i'm not implying anyone in particular with that), it is an embarrassment to use that term
January 12th, 2024 at 1:55 AM ^
It's NATURAL CHAMPIONSHIP, come on now.
January 11th, 2024 at 9:15 PM ^
Will the what? You referring to the National Championship Michigan just won?
January 11th, 2024 at 9:55 PM ^
no.
they might win, but no.
January 11th, 2024 at 10:09 PM ^
Maybe it'll trigger Hutch to light the fuse. Tends to motivate.
Draft Sainristil. Pursue college Team Captains ala Brian Branch/Hutch/Campbell as Harbaugh does with the portal. Like mini-coaches all over the field.
In re-watching the CFC game the level of communication pre-snap on that defense was amazing.
January 11th, 2024 at 11:18 PM ^
This feels so similar to 1989 with the Fab Five and the Bad Boys - but the football version
January 12th, 2024 at 1:34 AM ^
Inspiration can't fix a horrible defense
January 12th, 2024 at 1:57 AM ^
I mean, the same year as the 1997 NC season, the Red Wings got to keep the Stanley Cup at the Joe.
But let's be real, the Lions have a long way to go. The road goes through San Francisco and Baltimore
January 12th, 2024 at 3:46 AM ^
It would be nice if Michigan inspired the Lions to win the super bowl. Overall, the NCF this season is kind of week. So, anything is possible. But I can name 3 AFC that would defeat our Lions. Raven's, Bill's, and Chiefs.
January 12th, 2024 at 5:37 AM ^
we already beat the chiefs. on the road. game 1 of the season. not scared of the bills.
the ravens, on the other hand, already killed us once and could do it again.
January 12th, 2024 at 9:34 AM ^
