i can only imagine how small the numbers will be for the B1G championship game will be
November 29th, 2023 at 10:33 AM ^
It's on at the same time as Oregon/Washington and Florida State/Louisville. So I imagine the numbers won't be great, and could diminish if the game is clearly over early and either of the other two are at all competitive. If Bama beats Georgia, expect all eyes on the ACC CG.
November 29th, 2023 at 10:41 AM ^
Oregon/Washington is Friday night.
November 29th, 2023 at 11:18 AM ^
You're right. I only looked at time, not date. Oops.
November 29th, 2023 at 10:46 AM ^
There would need to be a LOT of OTs to clash with B1G champ game.
November 29th, 2023 at 11:03 AM ^
Oregon wins in a 97-OT game?
November 29th, 2023 at 10:46 AM ^
Double post...
November 29th, 2023 at 10:07 AM ^
I guess we see why "TV guy" Tiny Petitti wasn't worried about Harbaugh not being there affecting the ratings. That always felt like a weak argument to me -- if anything it creates MORE intrigue.
November 29th, 2023 at 10:16 AM ^
If we leave the B1G he can explain to the remaining mooks why the next TV contract will be not as big as it would have been. Then he can referee the circus when Penn State and Ohio demand proportional TV revenues to make up for their perceived shortfall.
November 29th, 2023 at 11:51 AM ^
His name is Petitetittie, people. Get it right. Also, yes, he may lack the self-awareness to be embarrassed when he has to hand the B16--nix, B14--nix, B10 (whatever) trophy to Harbaugh, but even an MSU grad should be able to read the financial tea leaves.

Only 19 million?
I will excuse the 111,000 who were in attendance and some 100 million or so who had to work last Saturday, but what's everyone's else's excuse for not being tuned in?!
November 29th, 2023 at 10:18 AM ^
It's my fault. I listened to the game on the radio (internet). I had to do this as I couldn't chance jinxing the game as I listened to the previous 2 victories over Ohio on the radio.
November 29th, 2023 at 11:04 AM ^
What is this radio of which you speak? Is that like spotify for old people and apes?
November 29th, 2023 at 11:56 AM ^
:-) yep, old people and apes.
Well, to be fair, I partially evolved with this by using the internet to listen to what was being broadcasted to folks living near the radio station.

I made chili for The Game for the past three years. I’m not sure if this is why Michigan has won all three matchups. I’ll be making the same chili next year so I guess we will find out then!
November 29th, 2023 at 10:35 AM ^
I'm sure your chili is awesome, but my fashion choices usually tip the balance. It's a lot of pressure, but I am compelled to accept it.
November 29th, 2023 at 11:39 AM ^
Better yet, just refrigerate it until then. Chili is always better the next day. Imagine how good it’ll be a year later!
November 29th, 2023 at 12:27 PM ^
Thanks for the reminder to clean out my fridge.
Remind me again next week, please.

Every bar/restaurant in downtown A2 was packed to the gills. Took until halftime to get a table at Pizza House. Always wonder how they account for eyeballs at venues like that.
November 29th, 2023 at 10:51 AM ^
Good question. Ferg's in St Pete with the UM Alumn of Tampa Bay must have has 400. Multiply this by how many other sports bars. How the hell is the "audience" accouted for?
November 29th, 2023 at 10:52 AM ^
Most places after the game were packed too. Wanted to sit down at Hopcat and watch the Iron Bowl but we were told the wait was 2.5 hours long
November 29th, 2023 at 10:09 AM ^
Anyone know what the "rating" means (9.0, 9.4, 13.0)? What is this a measure of in TV terms?
November 29th, 2023 at 10:20 AM ^
I believe this is the percentage of tv's tuned into the broadcast. So a 9.0 means that 9% of TV's in America were tuned into the game.
November 29th, 2023 at 10:22 AM ^
% of viewership watching TV at that time, or 9% of the people watching Nielsen rated television during that time slot
9.0 is higher than the CFP championship game last year - @ 17M watched
November 29th, 2023 at 3:33 PM ^
% of viewership watching TV at that time,
No, that's the share.
November 29th, 2023 at 10:25 AM ^
I got you, click here.
November 29th, 2023 at 10:44 AM ^
Nope, they all got it wrong. A 9.0 treating means 9 percent of all households in the country with TV were watching the game. This has nothing to do with how many were watching any TV at the time.
November 29th, 2023 at 10:11 AM ^
When Michigan has good football teams, they are the most popular team in the country.
So, 19M watched last Saturday's game, is this article stating that was the 2nd highest viewing amount for the rivalry AND the 2nd highest viewing number for any regular season game in college football history? I am bit confused.
November 29th, 2023 at 10:29 AM ^
Highest ever was 2006 UM-OSU.
November 29th, 2023 at 10:35 AM ^
I’m going off memory from my last job, but I’m pretty sure this would fall 4th all time regular season
Florida St v Notre Dame from the 90’s is #1
The Game ‘06 is #2
And I think Bama v LSU from about a decade ago hit 20M
I’d bet a lot this is #4 for regular season
a lot of Championship games have done in the 20’s - although last years was a dud @ 17M
November 29th, 2023 at 10:35 AM ^
I believe it's the 2nd highest UM/OSU game, with the only other game being rated higher than this year being 2011 Bama/LSU.
November 29th, 2023 at 10:14 AM ^
A: It's lower than I was anticipating. I thought it would cross 20 million
B: This probably doesn't count streaming and as we know with the Super Bowl, they can't account for watch parties. We had 15 people watching on 1 TV.
November 29th, 2023 at 10:34 AM ^
The number shown is only an average for the entirety of the 4 hour broadcast. Usually they also announce the peak viewing audience as well and it’s always a couple million more. Probably somewhere in the low 20 millions which is absurd for a regular season game.
In the age of streaming it gets harder to track an exact number for this but keep in mind that last year’s national championship only averaged around 17 million. Having almost 2 million viewers more for a regular season game is unheard of.
When people wonder why the B1G can keep pace with the SEC monetarily even though they haven’t had the same success in football. This is why.
November 29th, 2023 at 11:55 AM ^
The peak viewing was 23 million for the last 15 minutes of the game.
And what a glorious 15 minutes it was.
November 29th, 2023 at 10:16 AM ^
Wow, that's a lot of ad dollars. Must've been a windfall for. . . uh. . .
Payout to Zak Zinter: $0.00
Payout to Blake Corum: $0.00
Payout to Mike Sainristil: $0.00
Payout to Michael Barrett: $0.00
Payout to Mason Graham: $0.00
Payout to JJ McCarthy: $0.00
Payout to Rod Moore: $0.00
Payout to Roman Wilson: $0.00
I could go on but you get the idea.

How much did Maserati Marv and Honda McCord get?
I just love the imagery of a Maserati and a Honda Accord sitting next to each other in a garage.
Alos, does anyone else thing that Marvin Harrison Jr looks like a robot built by OSU superboosters? Not just on the field but even in interviews. I don't want to sound like Q'Anon but can someone get a blood test done on him to make sure he is human? LOL
November 29th, 2023 at 10:27 AM ^
As a side note, it's crazy that a normal afternoon nfl game got 30 million people watching - 50% more people than watched The Game. Was a great matchup between the Bills and Eagles but I guess that really does show how the NFL is just bigger than anything else sports wise
November 29th, 2023 at 10:34 AM ^
You're right, it shows that the NFL is king. No one competes with their TV ratings. Just a different level.
November 29th, 2023 at 10:36 AM ^
The NFL also has the benefit of consolidating viewership in a way that college football just can't.
November 29th, 2023 at 10:55 AM ^
Fantasy football is a big part of that too. It exists for college (we even had a league back in 2017) but not even 0.1% of the NFL participation.
November 29th, 2023 at 11:10 AM ^
And also the betting on NFL games is, by a significant margin, the highest of any sport (in the US).
According to this article, 81% of all bettors 18+ yo placed a bet on an NFL game, and that has a direct correlation to viewership. Contrast that with #2 NBA at 54% and CFB way down there at 34%.
November 29th, 2023 at 11:53 AM ^
Yep, I know many casual viewers who don't give a damn about football, but they've been hooked on fantasy leagues. They are oddballs that can tell you all about CJ Stroud's stats but don't know what fair catch rules are.
November 29th, 2023 at 2:02 PM ^
There is really no college football culture in the northeast, think the big population centers such as NYC. Even Philadelphia is... Pitt I guess.
November 29th, 2023 at 10:28 AM ^
Bu bu but the b1g doesn’t need us. There were only two b1g games in 2022 without Michigan or osu that hit 4 million viewers
November 29th, 2023 at 10:31 AM ^
If it was 4PM it probably would have surpassed all of them
November 29th, 2023 at 10:35 AM ^
A 3:30 or 8PM kickoff would almost certainly have been the most watched regular season CFB game of all time. I believe that 2006 game was a 3:30 kickoff.
November 29th, 2023 at 10:37 AM ^
Yes, I remember watching that game into the evening. Actually ended up bailing on some kind of event I was supposed to attend
November 29th, 2023 at 10:35 AM ^
This game was as watched or more than 2 out of the last 3 CFP title games.
2023 Georgia vs TCU: 17.22 Million
2022 Georgia vs Alabama: 22.56 Million
2021 Alabama vs OSU: 19.07 Million
November 29th, 2023 at 10:48 AM ^
I liked the stats about Iron Bowl viewership too.
Just wondering - are the figures for the Bama v Chattanooga game a week ago available?
