AMC is very stingy about running this series over its channel on cable/DirectTV/etc.
If you have not taken the time to watch this series I would put it in the pantheon of television greatness and in the same breath as Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul, Soprano's, etc.
My Grandfather was an Accounts man in Chicago during the time period of Mad Men and for any of us who are in Sales today as much as out business have changed they have in some ways stayed the same. From the interpersonal character development to the social commentary there are many reasons to enjoy.
“Not great, Bob!”
Mad Men is a great show.
Best show this century IMO.
It wasnt even the best show amc had at the time
I 100% agree with you MGoBlue513. I tried getting into it a few times but I just found it so slow and boring. And outside of the cool authentic clothing/houses/furniture, nothing really ever happened. Stopped after two seasons. Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul were lightyears better.
Interesting thing. All three shows were about sad, lonely men reinventing themselves to become powerful and respected. With each succeeding and failing in epic fashion. At the end, only Don Draper had the chance to reinvent himself yet again.
^ both wrong
BB and Mad Men were two very different shows, both incredible in their right. I wish I could go back and watch both series again for the first time.
Such a great show.
My wife and I loved every minute of it.
My entire career has been in marketing and media. First 18 years on the sales side...and then the last ten or so years managing my own boutique agency geared to local businesses.
As much as technology has changed the nature of how we work and how companies market themselves, the fundamental principles of effective sales and marketing have not.
Never seen an episode. Not sure I ever will.
But my favorite discovery in the Prime library recently was The Kentucky Fried Movie!
Kennedy Fried Chicken>>>Kentucky Fried Chicken
You are a man of great magnitude!
1. Sopranos (started a rewatch recently and it holds up quite well)
2. Mad Men
3. Saul (best depiction of being a solo attorney that I’ve seen)
4. Not that anyone cares about the above.
This is a great list.
I'm unfamiliar with #4 on your list...
2) The wire
3) breaking bad
It is awesome very well written lotta life lessons in a true reflection of people I saw as a child in the 60s. Unfortunately, smoking included.
In my top 3 all-time for sure. That said, it does make me want to drink whiskey and smoke cigarettes, so it can be triggering ha.
You’re a grimy little pimp. As soon as I raise my hands, I warn you, it will be too late to run {meticulously rolls up sleeves, assumes old-timey pugilist stance}.
Roger: “I know cooler heads should prevail, but am I the only one who wants to see this?” 😂
Joan: “Everyone in this office has wanted to do that to Pete Campbell.“
1. Breaking Bad
2. Sopranos
3. Mad Men
4. Better Call Saul
Breaking Bad was perfect. No flaws. I thought The Sopranos hit the wall in the final season, while Mad Men had a much better finish, but Sopranos gets the nod for #2 because it blazed the trail the others followed
BB definitely had flaws. Amazing show but no where near my top. Also not very rewatchable. I definitely preferred Saul.
Mad Men and Sopranos were both impeccable. 1st and 4th seasons of Mad Men were outrageously good.
Obligatory 'username checks out'...
Mad Men and Sopranos were both impeccable.
Neither ended on a high note and both had certain seasons that were lacking…
Sopranos ended on a
I see what you did there...
Saying breaking bad isn't rewatchable is an asinine thing to say
You're right. Let me correct myself. It's incredibly un-rewatchable. Same is true of The Wire.
Breaking Bad is incredibly rewatchable. I’ve seriously watched the series like 6 times.
The two or three coma episodes in which Tony dreamed he was Kevin Finnerty began the downturn.
Way too many people are ignoring the real best show of all time, The Wire
Band of brothers might make it in your great group since it was based on actual events. The others were amalgams.
Amalgams from what movie reference? One of my faves and saw it poignantly on my Honeymoon trip.
Band of Brothers was superb, but I don’t think it belongs in the same category as the others. Series vs. Mini-Series.
True.
They run so many ads I couldn't get through the 1st season.
That's too bad. It's a great watch. The scenes about the Kodak Carousel and the Hilton relationship are some of the finest hours of this show.
When they open their own agency conspiracy. Awesome.
I've seen the whole series. This was supposed to be re-watch. It'll be on a stream eventually.
I thought the final screens of the series was excellent, especially if you watched any TV in the 70s.
Hail, since your grandfather was in the Chicago ad game, maybe you noticed that several ad related themes in Mad Men are actually from Chicago, especially from the Leo Burnett agency. Included in that is the Lucky Strike, "It's toasted!" campaign, which in the show came from Don Draper. Further, in name only, Don Draper seems to come from Draper Daniels, creative director at Burnett (Draper Daniels was not like Don in terms of womanizing etc. and wasn't as brilliant). Here's a free good documentary about the Chicago ad culture at the time, including A LOT of iconic campaigns (Marlboro Country, you deserve a break today, fly the friendly skies, they're grrrrrreat, etc.).
My Grandfather lived in Rockford IL he serviced Maytag out of Iowa before it was purchased by Whirlpool however he was so close to the Maytag men that they insisted as part of the acquisition he be retained and grew to eventually rep all of Whirlpool.
When Amana developed the first radar range (microwave) he had that account and my great Uncle (his Brother) owned Bush Hog Precision that provided a specialized ball bearing for the doors that was very challenging at the time (getting the proper seal).
I would travel with my Grandfather through Iowa and Northern IL during summers for a few weeks in his Ford Galaxy 500 convertible, Howard Johnson and Ramada Hotels and sit in on his calls as they all came to expect seeing me and comment on how much I grew.
He is the reason I went into sales after realizing I had no desire to pay my dues in a small market in Television with a Broadcasting degree.
Prime took away Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I've not forgiven them yet.
It's no Ted Lasso
I haven't been able to bring myself to watch. I think it came out while I was an advertising copywriter in Chicago (Leo Burnett was one of my stops) and I didn't want to spend my spare time taking in more advertising. But I've been out long enough that it's probably time I watch. I grew up in an advertising household, my stepfather started at Leo Burnett in the 60's and wound his way around the business, making stops in NY and a few other places so I know the business well.
Who was the most attractive on the show? Here is my ranking.
1. Megan, Jessica Pare
2. Joy, Laura Ramsey
3. Betty, January Jones
4. Sylvia, Linda Cardellini
5. Suzanne, Abigail Spencer
Ummm…Christina Hendricks?!?
Couple of big votes from me...
Talk about B1G expansion!!
