Illinois Snowflakes: The Coaching

This will be the thread for hot takes regarding the overall coaching performance.

I give them a B. Dropped passes, missed open receivers and no BC are not the result of coaching.

And let me proactively state that coaching isn’t why BC got dinged.

I say a C. Some mystifying playcalling. D got gashed in the 3rd quarter. I get being conservative but this almost cost them today.

But made enough plays on offense (some decent play calls too in there, especially on two crucial 4th down plays). Relied on your award-winning FG kicker. Managed the gameclock extremely well down the stretch to maximize the odds of winning. Right call to kick on 4th and 11 down.

I think we lost the momentum when we punted from the Illinois 39 yard line in the first quarter, netting 20 yards.  THAT was too conservative.  Then the Corum injury at the end of the first half, and it was game on.  Things started to slip out of control in the 3rd quarter when we suddenly were losing the battle of the trenches on both sides of the ball.  Cold and wind were factors.

I feel great about the way this came out.  Two 4th down conversions to save game, overcoming enormous errors.  Breaks were about even, and I think the game was well officiated.

Well-officiated?  Really?

The phantom hold that called back an absolutely amazing Roman Wilson catch didn’t bother you? How about Corum’s head getting twisted by a facemask that half the stadium saw but the refs didn’t?  The multiple missed DPIs?  (I’ll grant that it’s possible that Illinois stayed onside on the fourth down call, even though Olu and JJ both thought they jumped).  It’s amazing how often teams who are known for being heavily penalized suddenly play an almost immaculately clean game against Michigan.

No, this game was not “well-officiated.”  It had very strong vibes of the 2015 MSU game, in which several key missed calls dramatically swung the outcome.  The only difference is Moody.

We have lots of injuries and may have been looking ahead.

On the bright side we are 23-2 since the covid year and have outgained our opponent in every one of those games except the national semifinal against Georgia.

That last drive was like a fever dream. Why were we putting up so many contested passes when you have one of the nations best kickers? Why did you throw on 3rd down into coverage rather than waiting to :03 and spiking it???

Turns out the negative nancys were right- the offense is pretty bad outside of Blake doing things. The wide receivers and the pass offense is just bad. No sugar coating it anymore. Its bad. Bad bad bad

Wow. We somehow won the game. I still think they have stuff for OSU and it will look a lot better. I know this game was a downer but I truly believe this was a tough game on a lousy weather with many key players missing. That fourth down call to Gash was gutsy. Taking the FG, getting the ball back and kicking another FG worked out. I am sure OSU will be heavily favored now, but this team is gutsy and these coaches will get them ready. 11-0 and coaches have to get some credit.

WON THE GAME.

Big takeaways - did not play well in the trenches, and no shit there’s a monumental drop off when you lose your Heisman caliber RB and his 5* backup. Plus you lost your top two TEs. And some banged up OL and DL.

Strange game overall. It really felt like the Corum injury shifted the momentum completely…if Michigan scored a TD on that drive (and Corum isn’t injured) it’s 14-3 at halftime and we’re might not be in such a dogfight at the end of the game.

Also some wonky playcalling today. Did not help at all.

But made just enough plays. Escaped the trappiest trap that every trapped. Even if they had lost - next week is all that matters. Just hope the injured guys are ready by next week - especially Corum, we likely don’t win The Game if we don’t have him and Edwards both available.

One of Harbaughs worst decisions this game was post game - McCarthy hero? Should have been Moody getting all the love.

They found a way but it wasn’t because of Harbs

JJ needs more confidence, nothing wrong with giving a boost for a QB who didn't turn the ball over, had a few drops that didn't help, and did well on 4th down.

Plus JJ got a nasty skin carpet burn on his throwing arm in a place that would cause pain when throwing.  It happened in the 1st quarter trying to block for Corum.

People love to shit on the QB don’t they. Did the same thing with Cade last year.

Bruh, JJ made some plays too today. Finally a game that basically NEEDED him to win, and hey look, THEY WON. And that defense is no slouch.

He also had 3 bad drops by receivers, one which was a sure fire TD on a deep shot.

Are you talking about the on the field interview? I thought it was fair to both players, with recognition of Moody as the winner. You can dislike JJ‘s quality of play today, but for better or worse, the offense flows through the quarterback, no matter who else is there or absent for any particular play.

I really thought the receivers would be much better than this. Guys aren't getting open and when they do they don't catch the ball outside of Ronnie Bell (I know CJ had a couple key catches today but he's had his struggles too). These same receivers made plays last year so I'm starting to believe that it's coaching. You would think WR would be Bellamy's area of expertise.

Weiss and Moore get an F for fucking awful. Tired of watching football all day and watching creative passing schemes all over the country and then having to watch the garbage put out there by Weiss and Moore.

You know, we all know Michigan is 11-0, and we all are happy about it. We're wondering if we have serious problems that will make it really difficult to beat OSU. A smug repetition of "11-0" isn't really on point here.

Trust me. Every single Michigan fan on this board is happy about 11-0. I still think OSU will beat us next week if we don't throw the ball better.

And all of those teams that you watched other than Ga, OSU and TCU have worse records than boring incompetent Jim Harbaugh. I like being 11-0 more than I like flashy offensive schemes. The goal is to win - you don’t get points for style - and we’ve won every game we’ve played, including dominating #11 PSU.

Profoundly unpleasant and raises a lot of question:  why Harbaugh QBs seem to regress, whether we can do anything without BC, whether we're as good in the trenches as we think.  But we should also take as step back:  in two years we've lost two games, one of which was the national semifinal. There hasn't been a two year stretch this successful since, uhhh, the Second World War.  If you'd told as at the end of 2020 this is where we'd be, we would have laughed you out of the room.  So I guess my take is, I don't want to, but maybe cut the guys some slack.

Last year, we had two ugly games going into OSU: one was against Rutgers (narrow home W) and the other was against MSU (narrow road loss)

This year, we've had two ugly games going into OSU: one against Maryland (decent home W) and one against Illinois (narrow home W)

I'm enjoying 11 - 0, you're freaking out over next week. You and I are not the same

On the coaching: really not sure what to say. I find it interesting how we ace 4th down, no matter the distance, as well as 2PT conversions. You think that would translate better on a down to down basis

Not pretty, still wondering why JJ didn’t have more calls in first half (but given how he ran when he did maybe I do get it), but …. Win and advance.  Felt like Iowa game in 1997 to me

Pray for the health of all the injured and let’s burn the tapes! It’s officially Ohio State week! 11-0 headed into Columbus! I lived there for 25 years! CESSPOOL 💩
