OT: Cable Cutting

Submitted by Jamied on July 21st, 2019 at 1:23 PM

In a fit of rage I cancelled Directv because they did not carry the British Open on NBC. While it felt good to break away from that big monthly bill I quickly realized that I need a replacement service.

What is everyone using that broke away from the cable? Directv was expensive but they pretty much had every college football game available.

About 9 months ago I switched from DirecTV to DirecTV Now (with Roku). It made for a smooth transition because I could get literally all the same channels in one spot.  After being unhappy with DirecTV Now, I switched to YouTube TV and would never go back to cable, satellite or DirecTV Now.  It was nice to see that the Mgoblog round table all seemed to agree that YouTube TV with Roku was the way to go when they discussed this topic two or three weeks ago.  Better way to say it: that's a good way to go; there are a lot of other good streaming alternatives, and you would probably be happy with many of them.  You won't miss DirecTV.  I'm saving $90 per month, and I am completely happy.  Just wish I had done it sooner.

One note to add: YouTube TV has a lot of channels I have zero interest in and will never watch.  You can hide those channels so they don't appear in your on-screen guide, which eliminates the need to scroll past them to get to what you actually want to watch.

Dumped Directv about 3 years ago.  I have Hulu live and no complaints.  But I also have fiber optic internet that is prett6 fast.

Also Hulu live only allows two streamers at the same time, but it's fine when you use network aps.

I wish things like PSVue worked for me. But since I live outside the B1G footprint it seems like my only viable option is to pirate the games... PSVue only worked for ~3 games when I tried it a few seasons ago. All the B1G channels were playing the same game or two instead of showing four seperate games even when multiple were happening. I know TV contracts are a thing but c'mon man. If I am paying for Big Ten Network.... I want to see every damn game.

For those of you who cut cable, who do you use for internet?  At least with xfinity, if you drop tv the internet monthly fee goes up quite a bit.

My building has google webpass for about $45 per month. It’s pretty f’in fast, although I’ve never gotten the advertised 1GB/s. So I have fast internet service and stream YouTube tv on top of it. Barely watch any tv though...like 1-2 hours per week...we’ll see if that changes once football season starts

Would love to cut cable.....but Michigan fan here, and there's no comparison to the picture/sound quality and quantity of sports on cable versus streaming.  And just wait til Fox puts one of our games on a channel not on the streaming services!

Everyone who thinks they're saving a couple of bucks by "cutting" ends up getting sucked in by drip pricing anyways.  $10 here for this, $10 there for that......before you know it, you're paying what you used to for cable/internet anyways.  Without the cheap, cheap alternative for good, good internet, ends up costing the same anyways when you add up the hardware and content costs.  Plus, not all of the services carry all of the channels.

Hulu for about 4 years now, though Disney bought them out and I'm afraid prices will soar, so I'll probably be looking around for a new provider.

I pay $103 for cable and internet through ATT. Once this "deal" is up i'll just tell them i don't want cable anymore. Only way to keep your price down is just tell them you're leaving.

I like YTTV pretty well. The user interface is fairly user friendly, you get unlimited "DVR" and it has all of my preferred sports channels and then some. It does not have Comedy Central which is the only drawback for my household.

Ehh my wife and I have XFinity and surprisingly enough, we seem to never have issues with them. Even in the times we did, we always got service credits. We use some of the streaming services too to supplement, but what we've done is usually called XFinity every year or so, right before our contract ends, and told them we were unhappy and wanted out. Got a good price reduction and then the cycle begins anew.

Everybody's different, but we didn't care enough to cut the cord, worry about what channels we'd still have or not have, all just to effectively only save five to ten bucks a month. Maybe we'll change our mindset at some point, but we're staying put for now.

YouTube TV. $50. You can have 6 users but only 2 or 3(don’t remember) can watch at once. You can even set them up with their own profile so they can keep their own DVR library. I split with a buddy For $25 a month. Just make sure you DVR what ever comes on after the game because I’ve had it where I missed the end of a game that went long. I have unlimited data on my phone so I’ll hotspot to a fire stick (yes,YouTube tv is Amazon Fire Stick. Youtube it for directions). They tell me it slows down after a certain amount of gigs but I haven’t noticed it. Or I use a lightning to HDMI adapter and hook my phone up to the TV.
