As good a time as any

Why not drop mens basketball or at least go down to a lower division?

We know mens basketball at the D1 level is deeply corrupt. To the point where it can safely be assumed that the vast majority of our competitors routinely cheat and a significant number of them engage in outright criminal activity to secure players’ services.

We know that this is deeply embedded in the culture of the sport and something most coaches accept as part of the business. It stands to reason that whoever we would hire to replace Beilein would either (1) be corrupt and expect to continue his practices at Michigan or (2) be handcuffed and unable to compete. If a teacher and thinker like John Beilein ultimately threw in the towel...what are the odds wed win the lottery and get someone as classy AND good as him again or someone better even?

It seems like the most likely outcome is unhappy either way...so why not opt out and send a message to the country that reflects on Michigan values in a great way AND would send shockwaves through  the corrupt NCAA system?

Read and research a bit further about football recruiting and understand that both men’s b-ball and football have much of the same stuff going on.  Fight on for a better way is how we should proceed, not some arbitrary give up to shock the world.

It’s time to brazenly pay players. Won’t ever be ok covering up players crimes. But let’s get some start making offers to the 5 Star kids like other elite schools.

Sure, but lets not be the guys defending and celebrating the dude with the sleazy smile and the bought ESPN feature about what a great philanthropist you are.

This has become a sport full of dudes in suits whose ethics are more aligned with the guys in Goodfellas than professors and teachers.

Its one thing to pay players, its another to create and support the criminal enterprise to do so under the table with plausible deniability.

I dont want Michigan to play any part in that. If we already do as some insinuate, all the more reason to drop it.

No offense to the OP, but this post embodies mgoblog’s pathetic transition from a legitimate place to discuss knowledge of Michigan sports to a seemingly dull therapy group.  Like Damn, half the posts on here read like a collaboration of Eeyore and Debbie Downer...

I see people on here complaining about the system all day and yet they think that trying to be the best within that system is no contradiction. Like you can mudwrestle and keep your shorts clean.

Consider this modest proposal a way of drawing out the reality of this forum vs the self image of this forum. Theres folks here who talk about Michigan Man ideals in a non-ironic fashion and yet are at the end of the day willing to play in a dirty fashion..so they can feel a bit better about life for a while.

This is truly one of the stupidest posts EVER.  Bring back the the countertops, bring back the are you a virgin, bring back the Keith Jackson died again posts.

Brain, please we need to a) put the downvote for OPs, and b) raise the point to start a thread to at least 5000 so this person will not do another for a while.

Your thinking is completely backwards.

Paying players - or their parents - is not the same as covering up crime sprees, or academic fraud. Not even in the same universe.

We should convene a meeting of likeminded universities - not invite the NCAA at all - and hammer out realistic payment schedules for players and their families. Do it above board. Pay should be high enough that bagmen can't afford to go over the amount we and other pay.

Then invite the NCAA to legitimize this or fuck off. Their choice.

I am amazed by the almost cult like belief in Michigan values and to some degree the rest of higher education implied here.  So, basketball is by far the worst (do we really think football is much better?) and the rest of higher education outside of the NCAA is a bunch of idealists committed to the betterment of humanity?

Sorry to break it to you but there are corrupt and unethical things going on across the world of higher education both within and outside of athletics.  Michigan has its share. Taking your ball and going home won’t make it better and the unethical crowd won’t care if you do.  Cheaters are going to win but the good guys will get their share of wins as well and in some cases may just make things a little better.  Hopefully Beilein made some things better.  I believe he did.

Also, I would note that, “We know that this is deeply embedded in the culture of the sport” when talking about a corruption and basketball could be read in a pretty negative light.  Some may wonder what culture you are referring to.

We should just drop all basketball scholarships and field our best intramural team. I assume that's what Northwestern does.

I don’t really understand the hype around basketball sphere. It’s a usual sports game and it definitely isn’t worth the attention it gets. Once I looked through the database of paperap.com and I seem to have seen some article about basketball there.
