[LOCKED] OT: Kaepernick/Reid settle with NFL
I'm guessing this is what the two 'Football' posts earlier today were intended to discuss....
http://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/26004715/colin-kaepernick-eric-reid-settle-grievance-case-nfl
Sorry it's WWL link. TL;DR version - Kaepernick and Reid settled with the NFL, neither is allowed to discuss the matter any further, so we don't know and probably won't find out what kind of settlement (MGoLawyers?).
Also, I'm guessing that this is going to get locked due to unreasonable discourse. C'est la vie.
[edit: mgowill] Well this turned out pretty terrible. I've noted some of the worst posts and will be banning accounts. Let's try not to do this again folks.

So, should we put your feelings on his kneeling aside? I’m not sure. S/
Honestly, if they didn’t feel like they would’ve been found guilty of collusion they would not have settled with Kaepernick.
And your post is pretty long for not getting the facts straight. You know, you could have googled your own questions— feelings aside, and all—before providing your take on what you feel.
He didn’t turn down an extension—he opted out of the last year of a contract he restructured for the team. The year he sued the league for collusion is the year after—after—he got one offer, a low ball from Denver. Seattle never offered him because Carroll said he was a starter and should have that chance.

I’ll concede the 49ers situation. However, Seattle did offer him a contract and Denver didn’t exactly “low ball” him with $7 million guaranteed, or maybe you make much more than that and it seems low to you.

"The 49ers wanted to extend Kaepernick" is a lot of revisionist history. We know this because... the 49ers GM said they were going to cut him:

She is happy Amazon decided not to land in NY!! 25,000 jobs and billlions and billions of dollars. They can't be happy about that. As far as I know they are just spreading the jobs around to its other locations but Amazon in Detroit would make Michigan great again.

Those jobs WILL NOT help the people who already live there, and with the influx of new workers it will price out the local community and further gentrification. It's not just a bunch of low-paying warehouse jobs. It's a national HQ with job requirements that well surpass most of the people who live there.
The fact that Amazon isn't even considering another location after backing out tells you everything you need to know.

Bull. Shit. If fucking Kirk Cousins could demand the contract he got from the Vikings...Kaep absolutely could get a very solid salary in the NFL.
Even if he was the 15th to 20th best QB in the league...that's a big time payday. The Jags, Broncos, etc. would KILL for the 18th best QB in the league.
Blake Bortles and Case Keenum are out here getting paid and y'all are mad cause Kaep got a settlement. Bahahahaha!!!!

Disclosure: Not getting into politics just personal experience.
I just never agreed with his reason for the kneeling. Yes people are killed by police wrongfully. I don’t like cops for the most part. They tend to have egos and abuse their power. Not all of course. But some I’ve encountered have been like that, others are incredibly nice and polite.
I understand why they are on edge though. Unarmed men aren’t sitting ducks, they can be dangerous.
Some if you may have read about this or heard about it on the news but my cousin was an oak park police officer and was killed by a 17 year old unarmed black kid (not a man at 17) back in 2008. The kid was pulled over for driving without his license in a car that wasn’t his while going through a stop sign/red light (can’t remember which it was) around midnight. My cousin pulled him over and should have taken him in, but instead decided to drive the kid home and be a decent person. Kid lied about where he lived and when they got to the apartment complex which was where his GF lived, he jumped my cousin from behind while his GF was opening the door to the apartment. They struggled, the kid got my cousin’s gun and shot my cousin in the back of the head.
So yes, some racist cops kill people. Some not racist cops wrongfully kill people out of fear for the own life. But when cops hear about stories like this, they are way more on edge and any signs of suspicious activity and they can’t hesitate to defend themselves, or else they’ll lose their life.
So I respect Kap’s right to protest but I totally disagreed with what he was protesting.

Are you black in America?
The fact is, there is a disporportional number of black people who are in prison, killed by police, etc.
I've never been to jail, never been arrested...never gotten anything more than a speeding ticket. Hell I've never even smoked a cigarette. I have a college degree, a full time job and I make almost 6 figures.
I've been pulled over twice in my life by police and had a gun pointed at my head. I've been handcuffed and sat in front of a busy intersection so everyone could see me. I've had my car blitzed by white officers only to find nothing more than an old CD booklet that I still have in my car for some reason.
Guns? I'm terrified of them. I've never even held a gun, let alone shot one or had one in my car.
One time...I happened to fit the description of a suspect. Turns out there was a cop looking for his white daughter who got cheated on by a black guy...and I just so happened to be a black guy driving my white friend home from a party because she was too drunk to drive. Once the cops realized the girl wasn't their buddies daughter...they let us go.
The other time, I was playing my music too loud...so they drew their weapons. Pointed the gun at the back of my head through my back drivers side window and my passenger window (2 cops) and made me get out of the car. It was 90+ degrees out. Excuse me for listening to the Blueprint (Jay-Z) with my windows down...didn't know that was illegal.
Handcuffed, pushed on the curb. Called boy. The whole 9.
Tossed my entire car...found nothing. Ran my license. Found nothing. Eventually uncuffed me, drove off and left me to pick up all my shit in the middle of the street.
So for anyone who doesn't know why Kaep knelt...whatever, I did. And I damn sure appreciated it. Because I'm not some "thug" who had it coming to him. I'm a die hard Michigan fan who was raised in Ann Arbor, moved to the southeast, got his diploma and stayed out of trouble. Just like many of you on this board (minus the move). Only I'm black so for some reason I have to deal with that bullshit in this country.
Or being followed at the store. Or people crossing the street or grabbing their bags when they see me. The dirty looks when I'm ever with a white woman...even when I'm dating a black woman. It goes on and on.
If you (not you OP) are someone who can't understand that's our reality. I'm sorry, but fuck you. And shoutout to everyone, Kaep, black people, white people, anyone who doesn't stand for the racism in this country. Because it's real. Police brutality is real.
I know all too well...

A disproportionate amount of minorities are also poor in this country. Poor people = more crime. Hello?

It may leak someday, but my guess is it takes a while.
As with most settlements, it's arrived at after both sides consider their strengths and weaknesses and the downside of pursuing further. No way to know the exact amount, but just based on the numbers involved with his potential damages (average NFL QB salary of $20m a year) he likely was in the $40m (+) range.

Good for Kaep and Reid. As a white guy, I have zero experience with the cause they were protesting and will withhold comment - I have nothing of relevance to add. However, the method of protest was/is a thing of beauty. The people that whine about it, that say it denigrates the flag, or the military, are out of touch with reality and running on strict adherence to ideology alone (much like most of politics, anymore).
Peaceful protest, as outlined in the Constitution, is used to bring attention to a cause. Kneeling during the anthem brings attention to him, and thus to his cause. Which is the only reason he does it - attention to his cause. If you read anything into it other than that, you're making it about you - and that's a problem with you.
As a Navy veteran with 29 years as a civilian supporting the Intel Community, I believe this was a brilliant way to bring attention to his cause. It worked incredibly well, disrupted absolutely nothing, and was performed within Constitutional rights and laws throughout the country. If anyone has ever had a better protest method, I'd like to hear about it...

He's still protesting his cause. The suit that was settled was against the NFL for collusion to keep him out of the league. That has nothing to do with protesting a cause, even if it was because of said protest. The simple fact that players still do it should show you the difference... If you don't know the difference (and you apparently don't) you should do some reading.

Do you know that happened? The agreement was sealed and there is only rumor about a settlement number. Collusion is notably difficult to prove, yet the NFL settled - so there was enough there to make a trial an ugly affair to the NFL. And perhaps (most likely) more expensive to Kaep than worth the risk given any particular offer on the table. Maybe the NFL just kept coughing up more money to get out of a trial? Everybody has a price...
You clearly hate everything about him, which is fine. I only talked about the protest method - which I still believe to be the best I've ever heard of.

I get your point. It was brilliant so you acknowledge that everyone with a cause can kneel during the anthem or at a work meeting or anywhere. Domestic violence, child support, anti assault, deficit reduction, environmental causes, abortion, gay rights, etc.
See the bigger issue with some of the public is that why does Kaepernick or any professional athlete get to bring their causes to work? Would the media give attention to athletes who advocate conservative causes like immigration reform? I doubt it. I think you doubt it.
