New in-state offer: 2020 QB Anthony Romphf
Southfield (MI) A&T quarterback Anthony Romphf was offered by Michigan. He's only 5'11" and 167 lbs., so this is a bit of a departure from what we've come to expect from a traditional Michigan QB. He's a 3-star, the #28 dual-threat quarterback, and #789 overall, with a 4.65 forty and a 4.26 shuttle.
Here's a link to his Hudl highlights (LINK).

Gattis effect?

Might be a 3* local lottery ticket while we try to take 2 QBs in the class to restock?
January 15th, 2019 at 12:15 PM ^
I do think Michigan is going to try to take two quarterbacks in 2020, unless something changes with the current numbers (a.k.a. someone transfers in).

Magnus, so with one QB committed (#752 on 247sports), and this offer going out, is Michigan just not even in the contention for a top 10 QB? Or do they just trust their evaluation more than rankings?
I know it is super super early, but kinda depressing seeing the rankings of the QB's we are offering.
January 15th, 2019 at 7:19 PM ^
I think Michigan has always trusted its own evaluation more than rankings. And rightfully so.
January 15th, 2019 at 9:53 PM ^
Magnus, you see this post, what is your assessment of the West Bloomfield QB compared to Rumphf?
January 15th, 2019 at 12:11 PM ^
I'll take a stab in the dark and say we're recruiting him as an athlete
January 15th, 2019 at 12:12 PM ^
Or this.. good call
January 15th, 2019 at 12:14 PM ^
Nope. We're recruiting him as a QB.
January 15th, 2019 at 12:36 PM ^
Is that as a QB or the Zach Gentry "sure, you can try out at QB but let's both be realistic" QB? I mean, I'm happy for the kid if he makes it here as a QB and I don't think the height is disqualifying especially if Michigan opens up the passing a bit; Kyler Murray is about 5' 9" and obviously is pretty good.
January 15th, 2019 at 1:00 PM ^
I don't think there's any way I can possibly answer that question right now. They told him they're recruiting him as a QB.
January 15th, 2019 at 3:57 PM ^
Makes sense.
January 15th, 2019 at 12:18 PM ^
Your stab is a little off! See *Alabamas Qb’s: #speedinspace
January 15th, 2019 at 12:40 PM ^
Tua's only 6'1" and this kid is still in high school, so he may grow a couple more inches before he hits campus.
January 15th, 2019 at 4:42 PM ^
If this kid is 5’11” then his o-line must all be 6’11”
January 15th, 2019 at 12:11 PM ^
If he's only that big, I would assume they're recruiting him as an athlete unless he's got some Kylar Murray in him.
January 15th, 2019 at 12:14 PM ^
Nope.
January 15th, 2019 at 12:20 PM ^
We will only win when we adapt to the multi-dimensional offenses of today’s times. Thus, you can trash the we’re recruiting him as an, athlete. Get used to speed in space! Last QB to beat OSU was who?
January 15th, 2019 at 12:22 PM ^
David Blough.

Magnus - Fake times aside, are those decent numbers for a QB? I'm not familiar with QB 40 and shuttle times
January 15th, 2019 at 12:37 PM ^
If they're accurate, yes, those are very good numbers for a QB. He's not Kyler Murray fast, but that's a good 40 time. Cam Newton ran a 4.59, Andrew Luck ran a 4.67, Russell Wilson ran a 4.55, etc. And the shuttle time is very good, regardless.
January 15th, 2019 at 1:13 PM ^
Newton and Luck are both much bigger so not really a fair comparison. At that size, he better be something special to get an offer.
January 15th, 2019 at 1:26 PM ^
That's fine. Go ahead and look up all the 5'11", 167 lb. quarterbacks and their 40 times. Thanks ahead of time for your research!
January 15th, 2019 at 2:04 PM ^
Well Drew Brees ran a 4.8. Flutie ran something like a 4.7. Tate Martell a 4.72.
January 15th, 2019 at 12:35 PM ^
Sry Mags! I wasn’t clear. Last MICHIGAN quarterback. Lol. You got me! GO BLUE!
January 15th, 2019 at 2:07 PM ^
Where did I trash the kid? I never criticized the offer or the kid. Just looked at measurables and thought to myself, "those are not the measurables of very many college Qbs, I wonder if we're recruiting him as an athlete." And my comment does not indicate any inclination to refuse to adapt to anything. You've got some weird obsession.
January 15th, 2019 at 3:51 PM ^
Dang Bacon I don’t get it. Trash as in, throw it away. It’s not that serious. Talking obsessed. Try relaxing you’ll live longer.
January 15th, 2019 at 3:12 PM ^
I think you are overestimating this kids speed. If a 4.65 is accurate, and remember HS reported 40 times and heights are often inflated, then he would be a very poor man's Denard or Kyler Murray. Now if he can sling the ball, maybe he can be a very good QB. But football isn't moving towards tiny QBs with TE speed.
January 15th, 2019 at 12:28 PM ^
Holy shit, no way. that’s the kid who put out a QB skills highlight tape when he was 10 years old and it made its way to this board years ago.
January 15th, 2019 at 12:43 PM ^
When I see a highlight tape for a 10 year old, I immediately think Todd Marinovich. I'm not expecting the same disastrous result, but I do hope his parents aren't helicopter parents.
January 15th, 2019 at 1:15 PM ^
Gets happy feet in the pocket, doesn't set his feet before delivering. do not want.
January 15th, 2019 at 12:51 PM ^
1 part Romphf + 1 part space = fire emoji
January 15th, 2019 at 1:18 PM ^
He is too old!
January 15th, 2019 at 1:19 PM ^
Isn't there another in state QB of similar size and ranking we are recruiting?
January 15th, 2019 at 1:27 PM ^
Are you talking about Cameron Martinez from Muskegon? We're recruiting Martinez as an athlete.
January 15th, 2019 at 1:35 PM ^
The potential Yin to JD Johnson's Yang. I'm glad we're looking at two different styles of QBs.
January 15th, 2019 at 2:55 PM ^
5'11'? Could be the next Tate Martell! Y'all remember that OSU legend.
January 16th, 2019 at 1:41 PM ^
Known this kid a long time. Great IQ, Nice arm and very good athleticism. Was born to play QB, so as a few have already noted, yes, Gattis effect.
